Landspace, a commercial rocket development company based in China, has announced its second launch and landing recovery attempt for its reusable Zhuque-3 (Vermilion Bird-3) rocket on August 10th (Eastern Daylight Time). This mission is attracting significant international attention as it represents a crucial technological leap for China’s commercial space industry.
Technical Characteristics of Zhuque-3
The Zhuque-3 is a stainless-steel, reusable rocket powered by liquid methane and liquid oxygen engines, known as ‘Tianque.’ While sharing some design similarities with SpaceX’s Starship, Landspace is pursuing its own distinct technological development. The Zhuque-3 is projected to be capable of delivering up to 20 metric tons of payload to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), a performance comparable to SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. Methane-fueled engines are lauded for their high efficiency and reusability, and are also considered suitable for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) during future lunar and Martian exploration missions.
Significance of Reusable Rocket Technology
Rocket reusability is an indispensable technology for drastically reducing the cost of accessing space and increasing launch frequency. Landspace’s attempt at Zhuque-3’s landing recovery demonstrates China’s rapid progress in this field and its growing competitiveness in the global commercial space market. Although the initial launch’s vertical landing was unsuccessful, this repeat attempt reflects the company’s strong determination to overcome technical challenges and establish a reliable reusable system.
Growth of China’s Commercial Space Industry
Landspace’s ambitious projects are part of the broader development strategy for China’s commercial space industry, actively promoted by the Chinese government. The government encourages private companies to engage in space technology development and service provision, leading to the emergence of numerous startups in areas like rocket development, satellite manufacturing, and space services. The success of Zhuque-3 would pave the way for these Chinese companies to play a larger role in the international market, while also intensifying competition in the global space transportation sector.
Future Prospects
Should the Zhuque-3’s launch and landing recovery be successful, Landspace would become the first Chinese company to operate a reusable large-lift rocket, enhancing its technological prowess and reliability on an international scale. This would not only contribute to China’s manned spaceflight and deep-space exploration programs but also provide a new option in the commercial satellite launch market. The practical application of reusable large-lift rockets, following SpaceX, has the potential to significantly impact the overall cost structure of space development and accelerate the further expansion of the space economy.
