Key Findings
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced that the Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub (HVHH) project, developed by Orica in Newcastle, New South Wales, officially reached its Final Investment Decision (FID) on July 1, 2026, and has now transitioned to the “under construction” phase. This project represents a significant milestone for Australia’s burgeoning green hydrogen economy.
Technical / Clinical Details
- 50MW PEM Electrolyzer System: Central to the HVHH project is a 50-megawatt (MW) Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer system. This system will be powered by renewable energy sources and is designed to produce approximately 4,700 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. PEM technology was selected for its high efficiency and ease of integration with variable renewable energy.
- Integration into Ammonia Production: The green hydrogen produced will be utilized to replace fossil fuel-derived hydrogen in Orica’s existing ammonia manufacturing process. This is projected to reduce CO2 emissions from Orica’s plant by approximately 60,000 tonnes per year, significantly contributing to the company’s decarbonization targets.
