Lume Health: Sweat-based hormone monitoring and 2027 roadmap

Fitt Insider (referencing TechCrunch Disrupt) USA
Overview
Lume Health has developed a wearable sweat sensor capable of continuous hormone monitoring, starting with cortisol, to replace episodic blood or saliva tests. The technology utilizes a proprietary three-stage amplification technique to detect picomolar and femtomolar concentrations. This shift toward continuous molecular tracking allows users to analyze hormonal rhythms and their correlation with daily behaviors.
In Depth

Key Findings

Lume Health has introduced a wearable sensor that enables the continuous measurement of hormones through sweat. Unlike traditional lab-based testing that captures a single moment in time via blood or saliva, this device provides a continuous view of hormone fluctuations throughout the day. The sensor is designed to attach to existing wearables, such as Fitbit or Apple Watch, and is currently in beta development with a full launch targeted for 2027.

Technical Details

The technology is based on research by CTO Dr. Jonathan Moustakis, which established a close correlation between markers in sweat and those in blood. To address the challenge of extremely low hormone concentrations in sweat, Lume developed a proprietary three-stage amplification technique. This system can detect signals at picomolar and femtomolar concentrations, miniaturizing processes that typically require specialized laboratory equipment into an autonomous wrist-worn sensor.

Background & Context

The platform initially focuses on cortisol, a hormone characterized by a natural daily rhythm that typically rises in the morning and declines toward evening. Lume emphasizes the importance of measuring this rhythm rather than a single “high” or “low” value, noting that disruptions in natural cortisol rhythms are associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes. The company was co-founded by Dr. Moustakis and Vicki Powell, a former Apple mechanical engineer who worked on sensor technologies for AirPods and Apple Watch.

Significance & Outlook

Lume’s platform is designed for simultaneous measurement of multiple biomarkers from a single patch. Following cortisol, the company plans to integrate estrogen and progesterone. Over the last three years, Lume has compiled a proprietary dataset of thousands of hormone data points to inform these upcoming capabilities. The long-term objective is to make molecular-level changes visible, helping users understand how stress, exercise, and sleep influence their biology to support healthier outcomes.
