Overview
The EU-funded S.O.L.A.R.I.S. Project has commenced with 13 partners, including Green Elephant Biotech and Miltenyi Biotec, aiming to develop and implement new approaches for scalable, efficient, and sustainable CAR T cell manufacturing. A key initiative involves integrating seven new modules into Miltenyi Biotec’s CliniMACS Prodigy® platform, enabling digitally enhanced, highly automated GMP workflows. These innovations will be tested and validated at six ATMP manufacturing sites across Europe, potentially improving access and cost-effectiveness for CAR T cell therapies.

Key Findings

The S.O.L.A.R.I.S. Project, an initiative funded by the European Union and involving 13 partners including Green Elephant Biotech and Miltenyi Biotec, has officially launched. This extensive collaborative effort aims to develop and implement innovative approaches to radically improve the scalability, efficiency, and sustainability of CAR T cell manufacturing, addressing critical challenges in the field.

Technical / Clinical Details

At the core of the S.O.L.A.R.I.S. Project is the integration of seven new modules into Miltenyi Biotec’s CliniMACS Prodigy® automated cell manufacturing platform. While the CliniMACS Prodigy® is an established system for clinical-grade cell production, these new modules will enable digitally enhanced, highly automated GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) workflows. These modules are designed to optimize various stages of CAR T cell manufacturing, including cell isolation, gene transduction, cell expansion, and final product purification and quality control. The project plans to test and validate these new technologies across six Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP) manufacturing sites in Europe to demonstrate their robustness and reproducibility. This is expected to lead to reduced manufacturing times, lower labor costs, and improved consistency in product quality.

Background & Context

CAR T cell therapies have shown revolutionary efficacy in certain hematological cancers, but their manufacturing process remains complex, time-consuming, and expensive. As an autologous cell therapy, individual patient-specific manufacturing is required, creating bottlenecks in supply and accessibility. In Europe, increasing utilization of CAR T cell therapies has highlighted significant challenges related to insufficient manufacturing capacity and high treatment costs, driving a strong demand for sustainable and scalable manufacturing solutions. The S.O.L.A.R.I.S. Project brings together European research institutions, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and large corporations to collectively tackle these issues and strengthen the ATMP manufacturing ecosystem across Europe.

Strategic Significance & Outlook

The success of the S.O.L.A.R.I.S. Project has the potential to significantly transform the CAR T cell therapy manufacturing landscape in Europe. Establishing more efficient and cost-effective manufacturing processes will broaden patient access to CAR T cell therapies and contribute to reducing treatment costs. The technologies developed within this project are also applicable to the production of other advanced cell therapies, promising a wide-ranging impact across the biopharmaceutical manufacturing sector. Researchers, engineers, and investors are keenly interested in the role this project will play in establishing Europe as an innovation hub for cell therapy manufacturing.
