Major obligations under the European Union’s landmark AI Act officially came into force on August 2, 2026. This establishes a rigorous regulatory framework for the development and deployment of AI systems classified as high-risk and General-Purpose AI (GPAI) models, mandating safety, transparency, and accountability for AI technologies.
The EU AI Act categorizes AI systems by risk level, imposing stringent regulations across the entire lifecycle of “high-risk AI systems”—from initial design to market placement and ongoing monitoring. These comprehensive requirements cover detailed specifications for data governance, technical documentation, human oversight, cybersecurity, accuracy, robustness, and conformity assessment. Examples of high-risk AI applications include biometric identification, critical infrastructure management, education and vocational training, employment and worker management, credit scoring, law enforcement, and judicial administration. For “General-Purpose AI Models” (GPAI models), such as GPT-4, new transparency obligations and enforcement powers by the AI Office are now in effect. Additionally, in accordance with Article 57 of the AI Act, every member state was mandated to establish at least one “AI regulatory sandbox” by August 2, 2026. These sandboxes are designed to facilitate the safe and controlled testing of innovative AI systems, serving as a critical mechanism for fostering technological innovation while ensuring strict regulatory compliance.
