COMPANY PROFILE / iPS CELLS & REGENERATIVE MEDICINE
Editas Medicine
A company that walked away from an ex vivo editing cell therapy with good clinical results, earns its living as a "patent landlord" and has re-staked its future on editing inside the body
Editas is not an iPS cell company. It earns a place in this field because of what happened with "reni-cel", its therapy that edits the patient's own blood stem cells: results were published in NEJM in April 2026, yet in December 2024 the company gave up on commercialising it and cut about 65% of its staff. That story has a lot to say about the economics of cell therapy. The company now concentrates on EDIT-401 (preclinical), which is infused to edit genes inside the body, while licensing the Cas9 patents of the Broad Institute and Harvard University to Vertex, BMS and others. This profile concentrates on what the company invests in, who it works with and what it is aiming for.

1. Editas in 30 seconds, and where it stands in iPS cells and regenerative medicine
Massachusetts, U.S.11 Hurley Street (cover of the 10-K)
Centred on in vivo editing (LNP)Previously developed the ex vivo therapy reni-cel
(preclinical)Lowers LDL cholesterol. No clinical trial has started
Editas is a genome-editing company that has gone back from the clinical stage to the preclinical stage. It ran a Phase 1/2 trial of "reni-cel", an ex vivo therapy for sickle cell disease, and the results were published in the peer-reviewed NEJM in April 2026. Yet in December 2024 the company gave up on commercialising it and cut about 65% of its staff Sourced.
Its lead programme now is EDIT-401 (preclinical), which is infused to edit genes inside the body. Editas is also the exclusive licensee of the Cas9 patents of the Broad Institute and Harvard University, and it has granted a non-exclusive licence for Vertex's CASGEVY; that income supports the company Sourced. It does not treat iPS cells as a product of its own, but the BMS agreement covers T cells made from pluripotent stem cells Sourced.
2. The logo and how the name is written

A note on names: the legal entity is Editas Medicine, Inc. We could not confirm an official Japanese-language rendering in the material we used, so this article uses the English name throughout. Reni-cel (renizgamglogene autogedtemcel) is the same product that was formerly called EDIT-301. Vertex, which sells CASGEVY, and the Broad Institute, the original owner of the patents, are separate organisations; of the two, Vertex has its own profile in this series.
Official site: https://www.editasmedicine.com/3. Where the company sits in iPS cells and regenerative medicine
| Therapeutic approach | Where Editas fits | Status | Category |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genome editing (Cas12a, outside the body) | reni-cel (edits the HBG1/HBG2 promoters in the patient's own blood stem cells) | Phase 1/2 ended early. Commercialisation abandoned (December 2024) | Sourced |
| Genome editing (Cas9, inside the body) | EDIT-401 (raises expression of the LDL receptor). Delivered to the liver in LNPs | Preclinical. A Phase 1/2 trial is planned in Australia | Sourced |
| Editing blood stem cells inside the body | An approach that targets blood stem cells with LNPs. Proof of principle in monkeys | Preclinical (research) | Sourced |
| Allogeneic cell therapy (T cells) | Research collaboration with BMS. The agreement covers editing of T cells derived from pluripotent stem cells, among others | Led by the partner | Sourced |
| iPS-cell-derived cells (own product) | Not described | Could not be confirmed | Not yet confirmed |
| Mesenchymal stem cells and tissue engineering | Not described | Could not be confirmed | Not yet confirmed |
Our explainers on genome editing, off-target effects and safety assessment, genome-editing therapies for blood disorders, lipid nanoparticles and CAR-T cells give the background to each row of the table.
4. Company scale
Figures are in U.S. dollars and the fiscal year ends in December. Editas has no product sales, and its revenue comes from collaboration and licence agreements Sourced.
| Measure (US$ millions) | 2024 | 2025 | First half of 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Collaboration and licence revenue | 32.3 | 40.5 | 14.7 |
| Research and development expense | 199.2 | 90.0 | 37.8 |
| General and administrative expense | 72.0 | 49.9 | 21.8 |
| Restructuring and impairment charges | 12.2 | 60.7 | -1.3 |
| Net loss | 237.1 | 160.1 | 43.2 |
| Cash and marketable securities (period end) | Not confirmed in the sources used | 146.6 | 211.6 |
R&D expense is now less than half its 2024 level, as a result of scaling back after reni-cel development was stopped. The first-half 2026 figure of 211.6 for cash and marketable securities is the sum of cash of 181.8 and marketable securities of 29.8, added by us Our calculation.
Editas had 87 employees at 1 February 2026 (about 66 mainly in R&D, and 26 with an M.D. or Ph.D.) Sourced. The downsizing in December 2024 removed about 180 people (about 65%).
The figures above are for the whole company. They do not measure the size of any iPS cell or regenerative medicine business. As of August 2026 the company says its cash covers "at least the next 12 months" of expenses, a shorter period than CRISPR Therapeutics' (more than 24 months), so this is a company with little room to spare Sourced.
5. Resources committed to iPS cells and regenerative medicine
There are no figures for iPS cells and regenerative medicine alone. We show the company's resources as a genome-editing company, along four lines.
| Resource | Details | Category |
|---|---|---|
| People (company-wide) | 87 (1 February 2026), about 66 in R&D. About 180 (about 65%) were cut in December 2024 | Sourced |
| People (iPS cells and regenerative medicine) | No dedicated team is described | Could not be confirmed |
| Sites | 59,783 sq ft of offices and laboratories in Cambridge (leased to October 2028) | Sourced |
| Money (R&D expense) | US$90.0 million company-wide (2025); US$37.8 million in the first half of 2026 | Sourced |
| Money (financing) | An equity offering in May 2026 raised US$125.0 million gross and US$116.9 million net (shares at US$2.25, each with warrants exercisable at US$3.50). Cumulative equity raised to date is about US$1.2 billion | Sourced |
| Investments and acquisitions | The 10-K and 10-Q describe no specific investments or acquisitions | Could not be confirmed |
| In-licensing | Exclusive licences (for human medicines) from the Broad Institute and Harvard University to the Cas9 patent families and to the Broad's Cas12a patent families. Liver LNP technology brought in under a collaboration agreement (the counterparty is not named in the 10-K) | Sourced |

7. Plans ahead
August 2026Phase 1/2 in Australia
quarter of 2027Data on 3 or more people by the end of the third quarter of 2027
main data in 2027Dose finding with a single administration
placebo-controlledTo Phase 3 depending on results
US$5 to 40 millionThrough 2034. A further contingent upfront payment of US$50.0 million as well
Of the items in the table, the company gives timing for the EDIT-401 trial notification and the 2027 data Sourced. The plans may change depending on discussions with regulators, and the outlook is Not yet confirmed.
None of the following appears in the material we used Not yet confirmed.
Any plan to sell the reni-cel assets or partner them / the timing of approval of EDIT-401 / the timing of entering the clinic with in vivo blood stem cell editing / the detailed conditions under which Vertex's contingent US$50.0 million upfront payment arises / any plan to enter iPS cells and regenerative medicine. Timings and amounts in press reports cannot be verified against primary sources, so this article does not use them.
8. What the company is aiming for
This section includes things the company does not say directly. We set them out as inferences within what the primary sources support, with the evidence for each.
| What the evidence suggests | Primary information it rests on | Category |
|---|---|---|
| It aims to become a leader in in vivo editing | The 10-K states the aim of being a leader in in vivo gene editing | Sourced |
| Stopping reni-cel was a decision about cost structure, not about results | The 10-K says it was to optimise the cost structure and accelerate human proof of concept for in vivo editing. The NEJM abstract also says the trial ended early because of a reassessment of development priorities | Sourced |
| For a small company, ex vivo cell therapy is a heavy cost burden | Despite good results, the company abandoned commercialisation and cut about 65% of its staff. The company does not say, however, that this was because it is a cell therapy | Inference |
| Patent income is a pillar that supplements clinical funding | The 10-K says near-term revenue will come from Vertex, BMS and others. It raised US$57.0 million early by selling to DRI | Inference |
| Investor expectations are concentrated on the first human data for EDIT-401 | The warrants from the May 2026 offering are designed so that their exercise deadline changes with the announcement of data showing LDL-C reductions of more than 80% in three or more people | Inference |
We read the reni-cel story as material for thinking about the economics of ex vivo cell therapy Inference. According to the NEJM abstracts, 27 of 28 people with sickle cell disease had no vaso-occlusive crises after dosing, and all 9 people with beta thalassemia were transfusion-free at last follow-up Sourced (both single-arm, open-label, with no comparison group). The company still abandoned commercialisation. Ex vivo editing therapies pile up costs, including cell collection, conditioning, manufacturing and administration at a treatment centre, and this episode shows that good results alone do not make a business. The company itself says only that the reason was "optimising the cost structure" Not yet confirmed.
9. Partnership map for gene editing and cell therapy
The thing to notice in this map is that Editas acts as a "patent landlord", leasing to several companies. Vertex's own 10-K also records that CASGEVY uses Editas's Cas9 licence Sourced. The BMS agreement also covers T cells made from pluripotent stem cells, such as iPS cells Sourced.
10. Technologies and products on offer
| Product | How it works | Target | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| reni-cel (formerly EDIT-301) | The patient's own blood stem cells are edited with Cas12a (disrupting the BCL11A binding sites in the HBG1 and HBG2 promoters, which raises fetal hemoglobin). Conditioning with busulfan | Severe sickle cell disease, transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia | Phase 1/2 ended early. Commercialisation abandoned (December 2024) |
| EDIT-401 | Cas9 and two guide RNAs disrupt a repressive sequence in the LDL receptor gene, increasing the receptor. Delivered to the liver in LNPs. A single administration | High LDL cholesterol (first, heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia) | Preclinical. A Phase 1/2 trial is planned in Australia |
| In vivo blood stem cell editing | AsCas12a delivered to blood stem cells in LNPs | Sickle cell disease, beta thalassemia | Preclinical (proof of principle in monkeys) |
| Targeted LNP platform | Changing the targeting molecule attached to the LNP lets it aim at cells other than the liver | - (platform technology) | Delivery to two kinds of cells confirmed in humanised mice |
Trial results (figures from papers or the 10-K, with comparator and time point)
| Trial | Population and design | Result | Time point and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| reni-cel, sickle cell disease (RUBY, NEJM) | Severe cases, ages 12 to 50. Single-arm, open-label Phase 1/2. 28 people dosed | At 6 months, mean total hemoglobin in 18 people rose from 9.8 to 13.8 g/dL and mean HbF from 2.5% to 48.1%. 27 of 28 had no vaso-occlusive crises after dosing | Median follow-up 9.5 months (as of 29 October 2024). Analysis not prespecified. The trial ended early |
| reni-cel, beta thalassemia (EdiTHAL, NEJM) | Ages 18 to 35. Single-arm, open-label Phase 1/2. 9 people dosed | All 9 were transfusion-free at last follow-up. The 6 people followed for 12 months or more stayed transfusion-free | Median follow-up 17.5 months. Analysis not prespecified. 69 Grade 3 or 4 adverse events in total across the 9 people |
| EDIT-401 (10-K, preclinical) | Studies in monkeys and mice | In monkeys, LDL-C fell by more than 90% within 48 hours of a single dose. Maintained for 3 months in mice | No human results. Company-reported, not peer-reviewed data |
According to the 10-K, Editas has a system for examining the composition and quality of guide RNA rigorously by mass spectrometry and sequence analysis Sourced. The specificity of editing (whether it cuts only the intended site) depends not just on the length of the guide RNA but also on its synthetic purity and impurities, so analytical technology for the material becomes a competitive strength.
The other point is the targeting molecule (ligand) on the LNP. The 10-K says that by swapping the targeting molecule attached to the LNP, it can aim at cells other than those in the liver, blood stem cells included Sourced. How molecules are attached to the particle surface, and how many, is a question of lipid materials and conjugation chemistry, and it is a challenge shared with the technologies that aim to deliver to specific cells in regenerative medicine Inference.
11. The risks this company carries
| Risk | Details | Category |
|---|---|---|
| No clinical-stage product | Every programme is preclinical or in research. The lead, EDIT-401, has not yet entered a clinical trial | Sourced |
| Funding and dilution | Cash and marketable securities are about US$211.6 million, covering 12 months. The May 2026 offering was priced at US$2.25 a share with warrants (US$3.50 a share), which leads to dilution of the shares | Sourced |
| Downsizing | About 180 people (about 65%) were cut in December 2024. The research organisation has to be rebuilt | Sourced |
| Patents | The core patents depend on exclusive licences from the Broad Institute and Harvard University. Editas pays the Broad and Harvard a "mid double-digit percentage" of what it receives from Vertex | Sourced |
| Early sale of future income | It has already sold up to 100% of future licence fees from Vertex to DRI, which reduces its future cash income | Sourced |
| Dependence on partners | The BMS research term runs to November 2026 (an extension may require additional payments) | Sourced |
| Safety of in vivo editing | There are no human safety data yet. In the EDIT-401 monkey studies there were transient liver enzyme elevations, which recovered within a week according to the 10-K | Sourced |
12. Glossary
- Cas12a
- A DNA-cutting enzyme that sits alongside Cas9. The shape of the cut is different, which widens the range of sites that can be targeted.
- HBG1 / HBG2 promoter
- The "switch" regions of the fetal hemoglobin genes. Editing them raises fetal hemoglobin.
- Ex vivo / in vivo editing
- Ex vivo means cells are taken out, edited and returned. In vivo means a drug is infused and edits genes directly inside the body.
- LDL-C
- So-called "bad" cholesterol. High levels raise the risk of diseases caused by hardening of the arteries.
- LNP (lipid nanoparticle)
- A tiny particle made of lipids that wraps nucleic acids and delivers them into cells.
- Functional upregulation
- Strengthening the activity of a normal gene by disrupting the sequence that suppresses it, rather than destroying the gene itself.
- Pluripotent stem cells
- Cells such as iPS cells and ES cells that can turn into many kinds of cells.
- Exclusive / non-exclusive licence
- A permission to use a patent. An exclusive licence goes to one party only; a non-exclusive licence can be granted to several companies.
- Warrant
- A right to buy shares at a set price. It is sometimes handed to investors together with shares in an equity offering.
- Preclinical
- Research before a drug is given to people: experiments in animals or cells.
