INSTITUTION PROFILE / ADHESIVES & ENCAPSULANTS
American Chemical Society
A US learned society that shapes the chemical industry through papers and substance numbers
The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a US society of chemists. It does not set standards or regulations for adhesives and encapsulants. It influences the field by controlling the flow of information: papers (the Journal of the American Chemical Society and others), chemical substance registry numbers (CAS Registry Numbers) and its annual meetings. The ingredients of an adhesive or an encapsulant are identified by CAS Registry Number, both in regulators' substance lists and in the chemistry literature. This profile looks at ACS's influence on adhesives and encapsulants as a source of information.

1. ACS in 30 seconds
ACS's influence comes from controlling what gets written and what things are called. CAS Registry Numbers, managed by ACS's operating division CAS, have been the standard for identifying chemical substances since 1965, and the US EPA's TSCA Inventory identifies substances by CAS Registry Number and CA Index Name Sourced. So when a raw material in an adhesive or an additive in an encapsulant appears on a regulatory list, the "name tag" that points to that substance is issued on the ACS side. But whether that substance is regulated is decided by national regulators; ACS has no power to set standards or regulations Our calculation.
2. What kind of body it is: the four types of influence
Unlike the companies in this series, the institutions that appear in adhesives and encapsulants coverage do not sell adhesives or encapsulants. What separates them is the route by which they influence the industry, and that gives four types. ACS sits at the right-hand end, in the "Convening" type: it provides a place to publish (papers and meetings) and a shared ledger (the substance registry).
The act that incorporated ACS gives it the power to make its own rules, to elect members and to hold an annual meeting, and it contains a clause on investigating chemistry when called upon by the War or Navy Department Sourced. The act does not mention any power to regulate products or to set standards Our calculation.
3. What it does for adhesives and encapsulants
| Channel | What the primary sources say | Relevance to adhesives and encapsulants |
|---|---|---|
| Papers (ACS Publications) | DOIs registered with Crossref (as of 3 October 2026): Journal of the American Chemical Society 221,185; ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces 70,495; Macromolecules 52,572; Langmuir 61,564. About 2.23 million for ACS as a whole | Macromolecules (polymers), ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces (materials and interfaces) and Langmuir (surfaces and interfaces) are titles under which basic research on adhesion and encapsulation can appear. We could not open each journal's scope page, so this selection is ours |
| CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) | An operating division of ACS. Launched the abstracting journal Chemical Abstracts in 1907. CAS Registry Numbers have been the standard for identifying substances since 1965. The CAS REGISTRY database holds over 290 million substances. CAS says governments and regulators use the numbers to identify substances | A number that points to one substance: a resin, hardener, filler or additive. The US EPA's TSCA Inventory identifies substances by CAS Registry Number and CA Index Name |
| Annual meeting | ACS Fall 2026 was held in Chicago on 23-27 August 2026. 31 divisions and 10 committees contributed programming, and 10,370 papers were accepted | A venue where polymer, materials and coatings work is presented. It is not a meeting devoted to adhesives or encapsulants |
| Divisions | ACS has 32 divisions. For example, the Division of Polymer Chemistry (POLY) serves members interested in polymer synthesis, characterisation and application; the Rubber Division works on elastomer education and networking | We could not confirm a division devoted to adhesives (the word "adhesive" does not appear on the POLY or Rubber Division websites) |
For people developing adhesives or encapsulants, ACS is not the body that defines how to measure things; it is the front door to the literature. Searching for papers on a new hardener or filler, or checking a raw material against a safety data sheet or a regulatory substance list, means using papers and CAS Registry Numbers. The standards that define how to measure bond strength or thermal conductivity, by contrast, come from standards bodies such as ISO and ASTM, not from ACS. It is also worth remembering that a journal paper is a peer-reviewed research report, a different kind of evidence from a manufacturer's stated value or a value specified in a standard.
4. How far its influence reaches (powers and geography)
| Aspect | What ACS has | What it does not have |
|---|---|---|
| Powers | Publishing papers, assigning CAS Registry Numbers (CAS assigns a number when a new substance enters the registry), holding the annual meeting, and running divisions and committees for members | Power to make laws or rules, to set test standards, or to certify products. Power to decide which substances are regulated |
| Geography | Worldwide researchers and companies. ACS publications and CAS data are used internationally, and regulators' lists such as the US EPA's TSCA Inventory use CAS Registry Numbers | Direct power over other countries' regulation. We did not check what regulators in Europe and elsewhere use for identification |
| Membership profile | 101,199 members. Of the 251,396 in the wider community, those whose occupation is known are about 15% industry, 25% academia and 2% government; more than half are unknown (as of 31 July 2025) | No count has been published for people working specifically on adhesives and encapsulants |
| Scale | 32 divisions; 10,370 accepted papers at ACS Fall 2026 | We could not open pages giving the budget or staff numbers |
Of the 251,396, about 148,000 are "Community Associates", people registered for what ACS's membership page describes as a complimentary, limited set of benefits. Regular members number 101,199. The DOI counts are lifetime totals for each journal, not counts of papers about adhesives or encapsulants Our calculation. We could not confirm paper or member counts limited to adhesives and encapsulants Not yet confirmed.
5. Who it works with
| Counterpart | Relationship | Source |
|---|---|---|
| CAS | An operating division of ACS (it grew out of Chemical Abstracts). Runs the substance registry and literature databases | CAS history page |
| US EPA | Identifies the substances on the TSCA Inventory by CAS Registry Number and CA Index Name. TSCA is the US chemical-substances regulation law | EPA's TSCA Inventory page |
| Division of Polymer Chemistry (POLY) | A non-profit technical division of ACS. Members worldwide with an interest in polymer synthesis, characterisation and application | POLY website |
| Rubber Division | ACS's Rubber Division: elastomer education and networking, technical meetings, and the journal Rubber Chemistry & Technology | Rubber Division website |
* We could not confirm, from primary sources, a direct relationship with the companies profiled in this series (Henkel, Resonac, Sumitomo Bakelite and others).
6. Outlook
| What can be read from the sources | Primary evidence | Type |
|---|---|---|
| The more substance lists regulators draw up, the more CAS Registry Numbers and CAS data will be used | CAS says governments and regulators use the numbers to identify substances, and the EPA's TSCA Inventory identifies substances by number. We did not check changes in the lists themselves | Inference |
| ACS aims to grow its members and society affiliates to 150,000 | The chair of ACS's Committee on Membership Affairs set out a multi-year vision of 150,000 members and affiliates (the same count was about 103,000 on 31 July 2025) | Not yet confirmed |
7. Glossary
- Federal charter (incorporation by Congress)
- Being established as a corporation by an act of Congress. ACS was incorporated by a 1937 act. Incorporation does not carry regulatory or certification powers.
- CAS Registry Number (CAS RN)
- An identification number given to one chemical substance. Up to 10 digits in three hyphen-separated parts; the last digit is a check digit.
- DOI
- A persistent identifier for papers and other items. The DOI counts here are registrations with Crossref, a rough proxy for the number of papers.
- Division
- A subject-based unit within ACS. Members join divisions and hear presentations in their own field at the annual meeting.
- TSCA Inventory
- The list, under the US chemical-substances law TSCA, of existing chemical substances manufactured, processed or imported in the United States (excluding those that qualify for an exemption).
