COMPANY PROFILE / BIOSENSORS

Siemens Healthineers
A medical-technology group whose in vitro diagnostics unit includes electrochemical point-of-care devices, and which has begun preparing to carve that unit out

Siemens Healthineers comes up in any discussion of biosensors because the same company sells both bedside blood analyzers built around electrochemical sensors and large immunoassay systems for hospital laboratories. This profile covers only the Diagnostics (in vitro diagnostics) unit. According to the Annual Report for fiscal 2025 (year to September 2025), Diagnostics had adjusted revenue of €4,347 million (about 19% of Group revenue) and an adjusted EBIT margin of 7.7%. In 2026, however, revenue has fallen year on year (the company points to a structural change in the Chinese market, among other factors), and in May 2026 the company said it was preparing to carve out the unit. This profile sets out what the sensor products are, what can be confirmed from official documents, and what is not disclosed.

The one thing to grasp first

Siemens Healthineers is best understood not as "a biosensor company" but as "a medical-technology group with three businesses (imaging, precision therapy and in vitro diagnostics), one of which, Diagnostics, holds the sensor products" Our calculation. Within Diagnostics, the products closest to biosensors are the single-use sensor card (epoc) and the sensor-equipped measurement cartridge (RAPIDPoint) for blood gases and electrolytes, and the Atellica VTLi, which measures cardiac troponin I from a fingerstick sample Sourced. Revenue for these products alone is not disclosed. Most Diagnostics revenue probably comes from large laboratory analyzers and reagents, but that share is not disclosed either Not yet confirmed.

2. The logo and how the name is written

A note on names: the legal entity is Siemens Healthineers AG. It is a separate listed company from its parent, Siemens AG, the German industrial and electrical group. Atellica, epoc, RAPIDPoint, DCA and CLINITEK are product or brand names, not company names. The logo image was taken from the company's official website (siemens-healthineers.com).

4. Scale

Until fiscal 2025 the Group reported four businesses (Imaging, Diagnostics, Varian and Advanced Therapies). From fiscal 2026, Varian, Advanced Therapies and ultrasound are combined as Precision Therapy, leaving three businesses: Imaging, Precision Therapy and Diagnostics Sourced. Because this profile is about Diagnostics, the Group as a whole is covered briefly.

A caution

In fiscal 2025 Diagnostics revenue in China fell by a "low double-digit percentage" (the company's wording), which the annual report attributes to centralized volume-based public procurement. In Q3 of fiscal 2026, Asia Pacific Japan grew very strongly, China fell sharply, and the Americas and EMEA each declined by a mid-single-digit percentage. Sales and growth for the sensor products alone (epoc, RAPIDPoint, VTLi) are not given in any of these documents. This article does not estimate them Not yet confirmed.

5. Resources committed to biosensors

Siemens Healthineers does not disclose R&D headcount or R&D spending for the Diagnostics unit separately, and there are no figures for the sensor products alone. The table sets out what could be confirmed.

A materials engineer's view: what "invisible resources" tells us

The company's sensor products put electrodes, membranes, a flow path and calibration fluid together in a single-use card or cartridge. The FDA document for epoc describes a sensor array mounted in a credit-card-sized fluidic housing, with a sealed calibrator fluid reservoir Sourced. From a materials standpoint, the electrode metals, ion-selective membranes, enzyme layers, sealing materials and the calibrator pouch all bear directly on quality, and all must be produced in large volumes as disposables. Yet the annual report gives no spending on these materials or facilities, and whether the sensor materials are made in-house or bought in could not be confirmed Not yet confirmed.

8. What the company is aiming for in biosensors

This section separates what the company says it is aiming for from what this article reads into the record. Inference marks interpretation drawn by this article from primary sources.

What can be readPrimary source behind itCategory
It intends to move testing closer to the patientThe official pages' language about "the right test in the right place at the right time", its point-of-care lines for blood gas, cardiac, diabetes and urine, and the annual report's focus on patient-centric healthcareSourced (company explanation)
It is renewing its blood gas portfolioThe annual report lists "renewal of the current blood gas and urinalysis portfolio" among Diagnostics' additions to intangible assets. The latest FDA clearances found for epoc and RAPIDPoint date from 2020Sourced / Inference (which product comes next is unknown)
The point-of-care immunoassay (VTLi) may not yet be on the U.S. marketThe 2021 announcement says it is not available in the U.S.; no match in the FDA database; the official page still lists the product todayInference (unconfirmed; this does not mean no submission exists)
It is moving Diagnostics away from the Group's coreThe CEO said he is preparing a carve-out of Diagnostics and called the other two businesses the "synergetic core"Sourced (company explanation) / Inference (what comes after)
It is making new laboratory platforms its main axisThe launch of Atellica Forte, and the CEO's statement that Atellica accounts for roughly 70% of core labSourced (company explanation)
One inference, explained in more detail

The reading that "Diagnostics is moving away from the core" rests on the company's own choice of words. On the May 2026 earnings call the CEO called Imaging and Precision Therapy the "synergetic core", and said that for Diagnostics the company was preparing a carve-out to keep a range of paths open Sourced. In the same period Diagnostics revenue fell on the structural change in China and its margin dropped to 0.9%. However, the company has not said whether the carve-out would mean a sale or a standalone company. And remarks on an earnings call reflect management's intentions; they are not a decision of the board or of shareholders Not yet confirmed.

9. Map of partnerships in biosensors

Acquisitions and investments around Siemens Healthineers Only relationships stated in the annual report or official press releases; no press-based relationships Siemens Healthineers Epocal Inc. Bought from Abbott (closed Oct 2017) Minicare BV Acquired (closed July 2019) Fast Track Diagnostics Molecular diagnostics (Dec 2017) Babson Diagnostics 20% interest (listed in report) Siemens AG Parent, holds 68.70% No named co-development or supply partners for sensors Acquisition (closed) Investment / shareholder (stake as stated in the report)
Fig. 2 Acquisitions and investments around Siemens Healthineers. Sources: Annual Report 2025 and official press releases of 2 November 2017, 11 January 2018 and 12 April 2021. Dotted lines show investments and acquisitions. Only relationships stated in official documents are shown. Siemens AG's plan to distribute 30% of its holding is awaiting shareholder votes, so it is not drawn Not yet confirmed. Fast Track Diagnostics is molecular diagnostics, a separate line from the biosensor products.

Neither the annual report nor the official announcements name co-development partners or suppliers of parts for the sensor products. The relationships that can be confirmed from primary sources are therefore acquisitions, investments and the link to the parent only Sourced. The 2017 announcement says Abbott was the seller of Epocal. Abbott is also a competitor in diagnostics, but it appears here only as the counterparty to a sale, not as a technology partner.

10. Technologies, products and services

On the official site, the point-of-care (POC) products fall into four groups: urinalysis, blood gas, diabetes and informatics (POC Informatics). The emergency-department page also lists a cardiac test (Atellica VTLi) Sourced. All figures below are manufacturer's stated values (official pages). Test conditions and editions differ, so no ranking is made between products, or against other companies' products.

CategoryWhat the official sources sayComment
Blood gas: epoc Blood Analysis SystemHandheld and wireless. One room-temperature test card covers blood gases, a basic metabolic panel, hematocrit and lactate. Sample of at least 92 µL; result in under one minute. Storage 15-30°C; shelf life up to five months. Calibration is automatic before every test (FDA document: calibrator fluid inside the card)Manufacturer's stated values. An electrochemical multi-sensor array (per the FDA document). See our explainer on electrochemical sensors
Blood gas: RAPIDPoint 500eBenchtop, cartridge-based. The measurement cartridge contains the planar sensors, sample probe and CO-oximetry chamber and is replaced as a unit. Sample 100 µL; result in about 60 seconds. Measurement cartridge use life is 28 days onboard or a maximum number of tests; initialization about 24 minutesManufacturer's stated values. Principle: potentiometry, amperometry and conductimetry (FDA document) plus optical CO-oximetry
Cardiac: Atellica VTLiA handheld patient-side immunoassay analyzer that measures high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I from a fingerstick. Result in eight minutes (company announcement). The emergency-department page says it uses "Magnotech Technology". CE marked in 2021; the announcement stated it was not available in the U.S.Company claim. The measurement principle behind Magnotech was not confirmed from a primary source here
Diabetes: DCA Vantage / Atellica DCAAnalyzers for HbA1c and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR). Atellica DCA is marked "not available for sale in the U.S.". HbA1c results "in minutes" and ACR in 7 minutes (Atellica DCA page)Not a continuous or self-monitoring glucose device. Instruments for healthcare professionals
Urinalysis and other POCThe CLINITEK series (urinalysis), CLINITEST hCG (pregnancy test), RAPIDLab 1200 and 348EX (blood gas) and POCcelerator (POC device data management; the official page cites more than 230 device interfaces from 70+ manufacturers)Informatics supports running POC devices from the laboratory's viewpoint
LaboratoryAtellica Solution (clinical chemistry, immunoassay, ion-selective electrode), Atellica CI Analyzer, and Atellica Forte launched in 2026 (company statement). The annual report lists immunochemistry, hematology, hemostasis, urinalysis, diabetes care and blood gas among its testing disciplinesMost Diagnostics revenue probably comes from the laboratory side, but the share is not disclosed
A materials engineer's view: where materials matter in a single-use sensor card

According to the FDA document, the epoc test card combines a sensor array, a sealed calibrator fluid and a sample flow path in one small disposable housing Sourced. In that format, the stated shelf life of up to five months at room temperature (15-30°C) sets the demands on the materials. The calibrator must not leak or evaporate from its pouch, the ion-selective membranes and enzyme layers must not degrade in storage, and the bond between electrodes and membranes must hold Not yet confirmed. The RAPIDPoint takes a different design: the sensors, sample probe and CO-oximetry chamber sit in one cartridge whose use life is set per cartridge (official page). In both, putting the sensor on the consumable side separates sensor aging from instrument maintenance.

However, the specific electrode metals, membrane materials, enzymes and sealants are not given in the documents retrieved. The above describes general requirements that can be read from the format; how individual products meet them was not checked. For the underlying ideas, see our explainers on enzyme and electrode interface materials, electrochemical sensors and POCT.

11. The risks this company carries

RiskDetailCategory
Structural change in ChinaBecause of volume-based procurement and price pressure, Diagnostics revenue in China fell by a "low double-digit percentage" in fiscal 2025, and China fell sharply again in Q2 and Q3 of fiscal 2026. The company calls it a "structural market rebasing"Sourced
Weaker earningsThe Diagnostics margin went from 7.7% in fiscal 2025 to 0.9% in Q2 and 4.1% in Q3 of fiscal 2026. The company cites lower revenue, product mix and currencySourced
Shrinking legacy platformsThe CFO said the dilution from declining legacy platforms continues. The annual report records an impairment tied to winding down one Diagnostics product lineSourced
