Key Findings
NVIDIA is advancing the concept of AI-defined fabs—semiconductor factories where AI optimizes processes and improves production efficiency—through the expansion of its CUDA-X libraries. Key performance gains include Lam Research achieving 30x faster simulation using the open-source NanoVDB library and Synopsys seeing a potential 30x speedup in QuantumATK results via cuEST.
Technical Details
The updated CUDA-X portfolio introduces several specialized libraries for semiconductor engineering:
- cuPotential: A new library for building AI agents that simulate atomic and molecular interactions. In early-access testing, it accelerated existing GPU-optimized workflows by an additional 2-3x.
- cuEST and cuDSS: Used for modeling electronic behavior and solving complex engineering simulations. Synopsys reported a 12x speedup in S-Device benchmarks using cuDSS.
- NanoVDB and NPP: NanoVDB accelerates 3D data processing for chipmaking simulation, while NPP accelerates image processing for chipmaking inspection, utilized by KLA.
- cuLitho: Accelerates calculations for printing chip patterns.
Industry Adoption and Integration
Several semiconductor leaders have integrated these tools into their workflows:
- Cadence: Uses cuDSS with Cadence Celsius to optimize advanced packages for heat and stress 8x faster.
- COMSOL: Employs cuDSS to deliver up to 10x faster multiphysics simulations.
- Voltai: Uses cuDSS and CUDA-X in its Voltaire platform to compress 3D-IC electro-thermal-mechanical simulation workflows from months to a single day.
- ChipAgents: Developing the “Build-A-Chip Bench” with NVIDIA to evaluate AI agents across end-to-end workflows from specification to graphic data system.
Significance and Outlook
As the demand for advanced chips increases, the complexity of manufacturing processes requires engineers to use digital twins to test changes before production. By providing AI agents with accelerated simulation and inspection tools, NVIDIA aims to help fabs manage this complexity, improve yield, and increase production capacity.
