COMPANY PROFILE / CELL CULTURE TECHNOLOGY
STEMCELL Technologies
The company behind the lab's "standard media" has built a GMP plant and is stepping into supplying raw materials for cell therapy
STEMCELL Technologies is a privately held biotechnology company based in Vancouver, Canada. It was founded in 1993 to take MethoCult, a medium for growing blood stem cells, out of the research lab and into a business, and today it offers more than 2,500 products, including media, cell separation reagents and instruments Sourced. A new GMP-compliant plant came on stream in 2024, and in 2025 the company received support from the Canadian government for two more manufacturing facilities. Given that its financials are not published, this profile sets out its resources and direction in cell culture using only what can be confirmed from its official website, official press releases and announcements by the Government of Canada.

1. STEMCELL Technologies in 30 seconds, and where it stands in cell culture
Canada Inc.The group as a whole is referred to as "STEMCELL"
British Columbia, CanadaManufacturing facilities in neighbouring Burnaby
organoid research, and cell therapyNo mention found of antibody production (CHO cells)
Companies involved in cell culture fall into three broad types: contract development and manufacturing organisations (CDMOs), suppliers of tools, consumables and media, and developers of cell and regenerative therapies. STEMCELL is a pure-play supplier: in the primary sources we checked, it neither manufactures other companies' drugs under contract nor develops cell therapies of its own. The "cell culture" it is involved in is cell and regenerative therapy, where the cells themselves are the product, and the stem cell, immune cell and organoid research that comes before it. Its moves in recent years have consistently pointed one way: a company making research-use-only (RUO) media is extending into GMP-grade raw materials that can be used in clinical manufacturing Sourced.
2. The logo and how the name is written
The STEMCELL Technologies logo is a trademark of the company. We have not recreated it with generated imagery;
the file img/stemcell_technologies_logo.png is the logo image used in the header of the company's official website.
A note on names: the company writes its name "STEMCELL" in capitals. Both STEMCELL Technologies Canada Inc. (in announcements from 2022 and 2025) and STEMCELL Technologies Inc. (in announcements from 2015 to 2022 and elsewhere) are used as the legal name, and the company explains that "STEMCELL" includes its group companies. Because the name is easily confused with the ordinary term "stem cell", this article always writes "STEMCELL" in capitals when referring to the company.
https://www.stemcell.com/3. Where the company sits in the cell culture field
STEMCELL's starting point was turning media that each lab made for itself into a standard product. Founder Dr. Allen Eaves writes that he was troubled that media for culturing blood stem cells differed from lab to lab, so results could not be compared, and that he made MethoCult, a standard medium using screened raw materials, and began selling it to other researchers Sourced. This thread of "standardised media" runs straight through to today's media for human iPS cells (the mTeSR series) and for organoids.
4. Scale (financials not disclosed)
STEMCELL is privately held, and its official website and press releases give no figures for revenue, profit or R&D spending Not yet confirmed. All the company publishes are ratios such as 20% average annual growth since its founding and 97% of sales coming from outside Canada. We therefore show its size through the headcount, customer numbers and sites it publishes itself.
| When published | Employees | Of whom in Canada | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Not dated | More than 1,500 | - | The founder's letter (which says the company is about 30 years old) |
| July 2023 | 2,300 | 1,800 | Press release on the company's 30th anniversary |
| October 2023 | 2,400 | 1,800 | Press release on the opening of the Toronto office |
| Measure (published July and October 2023) | Published figure |
|---|---|
| Average annual growth since founding | 20% |
| Share of sales outside Canada | 97% |
| Customers | More than 25,000 |
| Countries with offices | 8 (Canada, the U.S., the UK, France, Germany, China, South Korea and Singapore) |
| Countries with sales staff / countries with distributors | 20 / 80 |
| Distribution warehouses | Burnaby, Seattle, Grenoble, Melbourne, Singapore and Beijing |
| Products | More than 2,500 |
Total headcount has not been published since 2023. A Canadian government announcement in July 2024, however, says the new plant project created more than 1,000 full-time jobs in British Columbia (against a target of 675) Sourced. How far those 1,000-plus jobs are included in the October 2023 figure of 2,400 cannot be determined from the announcements.
The "20% average annual growth" is the company's own claim; no actual revenue or method of calculation is given Sourced. The company calls itself "Canada's largest biotechnology company", but does not say on what basis (revenue or headcount) the comparison is made. This article treats these as statements the company makes and does not estimate the size of its revenue.
5. Resources committed to cell culture
Following our standard method, we look at four things (people, money, investments and acquisitions, and links with universities and research institutions) and note whether each could be confirmed from primary sources.
| Aspect | What primary sources confirm | Status |
|---|---|---|
| People (dedicated organisation, sites, headcount) | A Services for Cell Therapy programme serves as the point of contact for cell therapy; the company says a dedicated program manager coordinates a cross-functional team spanning R&D, manufacturing, process development, quality control, quality assurance and regulatory affairs. Headcount for cell therapy alone is not disclosed | Organisation confirmed (headcount not disclosed) |
| Money (capital expenditure and R&D) | 2018: a five-year plan for an advanced manufacturing facility in Burnaby totalling $138 million ($45 million from governments plus $93 million of its own). 2025: a plan for two new manufacturing facilities totalling $222 million, with $49.9 million from the federal government. Total R&D spending is not disclosed | Plant investment confirmed / R&D not disclosed |
| Investments and acquisitions | Acquired Propagenix (Maryland, U.S.) in January 2024, substantially all assets of SQZ Biotechnologies in February 2024, and Cellular Highways (near Cambridge, UK) in June 2025. No prices are disclosed. No investments in start-ups are mentioned | Acquisitions confirmed / investments not found |
| Universities and research institutions | Research with Genome BC and the University of British Columbia (UBC) on transcription-factor-driven differentiation (STEMCELL contributes in kind). A partnership with CCRM on GMP iPS cell lines. Licences for university-originated technology (such as from iPS Academia Japan) | Confirmed |
All amounts are given with the "$" sign used in the original. Because these are announcements by the Canadian government and a Canadian company, it is natural to read them as Canadian dollars, but the originals do not state a currency code.
The same medium faces different requirements when used for research and for clinical manufacturing. For clinical use, the origin and test results of every raw material, the manufacturing records and the change control all have to be assembled in a form that can be explained to regulators. STEMCELL filed a Type II Drug Master File (DMF) with the U.S. FDA in 2018 for mTeSR1, its medium for human iPS cells Sourced, so that customers could cross-reference the file in their own clinical trial applications; its Senior Director of Quality Assurance & Regulatory Affairs, Lynn Csontos, called it "the first of many DMFs to come". With the GMP plant coming on stream in 2024, the company now has in house a path for moving into clinical manufacturing with the same formulation as the medium used in research. If researchers can keep using the medium they first chose, they avoid the major chore of comparison studies (demonstrating comparability) that switching media entails.
6. What it has done so far

The plans that can be read from official announcements fall into three strands: large-scale domestic production of raw materials (the two new facilities), supply of starting materials for cell therapy (GMP iPS cell lines, with hypoimmune lines to be added), and automation of research tools (organoid culture) Sourced. In the 2024 release on the SQZ asset purchase, the CEO said that STEMCELL's "own instruments will have the potential to be used in the delivery of cell therapies", and the release says the company can now sell CellPore-related products exclusively in all markets, including clinical use Sourced.
None of the following appears in official announcements Not yet confirmed.
Revenue and the share from cell therapy; R&D spending; the location, completion date and specific products of the two new facilities; the launch date of a clinical-grade version of CellPore; the prices of the three acquisitions; and the number of GMP products. Press reports and research-firm estimates are not used in this article.
8. What the company is aiming for in cell culture
This section goes beyond what the company says directly. It sets out inferences that can be drawn from primary sources, each with its basis.
| What can be read | Primary evidence behind it | Category |
|---|---|---|
| The aim is to keep customers won in research all the way through to clinical manufacturing | The DMF filing for mTeSR1, the construction of the GMP plant, and the partnership selling GMP iPS cell lines together with research lines from the same starting material | Inference |
| It is assembling not just media but instruments to "separate, deliver and grow" | The acquisition of SQZ assets (an instrument for delivering genes and other material into cells) and Cellular Highways (a cell sorter), and sales of PBS Biotech's bioreactors | Inference |
| Its policy is not to move into contract manufacturing or developing its own therapies | The official material we checked makes no mention of a CDMO business or an in-house pipeline. Its services for cell therapy are about supporting use of its products as raw materials | Inference |
| It is expanding capacity hand in hand with Canadian industrial policy | In both 2018 and 2025, plant investment was co-funded by the federal government (and in 2018 by the province of British Columbia) | Sourced |
| It is heading towards selling organoids as an alternative to animal testing | The Molecular Devices announcement says it supports the adoption of "new approach methodologies (NAMs)" | Inference |
In its July 2026 partnership with CCRM, STEMCELL announced that it would offer iPS cell lines made under GMP together with research lines made from the same starting material Sourced. The release stresses "the risk of a costly change of starting material later in development". If researchers start experiments with the research line and then move straight on to a GMP line whose equivalence to that research line has been confirmed, then both media and cell lines stay STEMCELL products from the first day of research through to clinical manufacturing. From this, our reading is that the company is trying to lift its strength as "the research standard" into the clinical standard Not yet confirmed.
9. Map of cell culture partnerships
10. Technologies, products and services
| Category | Main products and services | What official material says |
|---|---|---|
| Stem cell media | MethoCult (haematopoietic stem cells), mTeSR1 / mTeSR Plus / mTeSR3D (maintenance and 3D suspension culture of human ES and iPS cells) and STEMdiff (differentiation) | mTeSR1 is a feeder-free medium used in more than 1,500 publications, with a Type II DMF (number 18339) filed with the FDA |
| Immune cell culture | ImmunoCult T cell activation reagents and ImmunoCult-XF T cell expansion medium | Free of xenogeneic components and serum. For research use at launch in 2015 |
| Organoids | IntestiCult Plus (intestinal organoids) and culture kits for other tissues | A workflow validated on Molecular Devices' automated culture system has been published |
| Cell separation | EasySep (column-free immunomagnetic separation) and Highway1 (closed, sterile cell sorter) | The EasySep CD138 kit is a Class II in vitro diagnostic device under FDA de novo classification |
| Gene delivery | The CellPore transfection system | Rather than electricity, it deforms cells in microchannels to open temporary pores. Currently for research use |
| Services for cell therapy | Services for Cell Therapy (documentation, custom manufacturing and regulatory support for using its products as ancillary materials) and STEMSOFT software | Has supported more than 45 clinical trials worldwide. Some products are manufactured in house under cGMP |
| Starting materials for cell therapy | LineaBio's GMP iPS cell lines, together with research lines made from the same starting material | The lead line, Linea 1, is supported by an FDA DMF and fully genome-characterised |
In announcing mTeSR Plus, the company explained that maintaining the medium's pH and stabilising the growth factor FGF2 prevents rapid acidification and makes it possible to skip weekend feeding Sourced. Human iPS cells are metabolically active, so their medium quickly turns acidic, and proteins such as FGF2 degrade at 37°C. Changing the medium every day is the usual countermeasure, but it costs labour and money and introduces variation in handling. Reducing handling frequency through "materials-side" improvements in buffering capacity and component stability works both in the lab and in clinical manufacturing, and it is one way a media maker can contribute to automation differently from an equipment maker. The company also says this acidification has been linked to DNA damage and genetic instability, so it presents the change as meaningful for quality as well.
11. The risks this company carries
| Risk | Substance | Category |
|---|---|---|
| Results cannot be checked from outside | As a private company it publishes no revenue, profit or R&D figures. Even the 20% growth rate is self-reported | Sourced |
| Delays in bringing large investments on stream | The manufacturing facility that the 2018 plan said would be completed by 2023 opened in July 2024 (about a year late). No completion dates are given for the two facilities announced in 2025 either | Our calculation |
| Dependence on research budgets | Its customers are mainly researchers, and 97% of sales come from outside Canada. It is exposed to research budgets in each country and to exchange rates | Inference |
| Competition in the clinical market | The markets for GMP raw materials and cell separation equipment are crowded with large companies that have both equipment and contract manufacturing. STEMCELL has no contract manufacturing | Inference |
| Taking acquired technologies into the clinic | Using CellPore or Highway1 in clinical manufacturing requires GMP-grade versions and a track record of approvals on the customer side. No timing for clinical versions has been published | Not yet confirmed |
