COMPANY PROFILE / iPS CELLS & REGENERATIVE MEDICINE
FUJIFILM Cellular Dynamics
A FUJIFILM group company that keeps making the starting cells for other companies' iPS cell-derived therapies
FUJIFILM Cellular Dynamics (FCDI), based in Madison, Wisconsin, is a subsidiary of the FUJIFILM group that makes therapeutic-grade iPS cell lines and the cells differentiated from them, and supplies them to, or manufactures them under contract for, other companies. It has no therapeutics of its own. It provides the starting cells for BlueRock's OpCT-001 for retinal disease, Century Therapeutics' immune cells, Novo Nordisk's cell therapies and others. In May 2026 it opened a new building that is part of a US$200 million investment. The entries "FUJIFILM" and "FCDI" in this series' working company list are treated here as this same company. FCDI's own financials are not published, so this profile relies only on the earnings release of FUJIFILM Holdings, its partners' SEC filings, and official announcements from the company and its partners. It is not medical advice on treatment choices.

1. FUJIFILM Cellular Dynamics in 30 seconds, and where it stands in iPS cells and regenerative medicine
Part of a large corporate groupDoes not sell therapeutics itself; makes and supplies cells
contract development and manufacturing of cell therapiesGMP iPS cell lines; iCell research cells
Companies involved in iPS cells and regenerative medicine fall into three broad groups: large pharma & strategic partners, genome editing & gene therapy, and iPS cell & cell therapy. FUJIFILM Cellular Dynamics (FCDI) is a company in "iPS cell & cell therapy" that does not sell therapeutics itself but makes and supplies the cells from which other companies' therapeutics are built, and at the same time it is part of the FUJIFILM group, a large industrial company Sourced. It provides cell lines, and a manufacturing home for them, for other companies' iPS cell-derived therapies, such as BlueRock's OpCT-001 (retinal disease), Century Therapeutics' immune cells and Novo Nordisk's cell therapies Sourced. FCDI's performance therefore depends not on its own trial results but on whether its partners' development moves forward. FCDI's own revenue and profit are not published, so this article keeps to what the parent's disclosures and its partners' SEC filings can support.
2. The logo and how the name is written

The entries "FUJIFILM" and "FCDI" in this series' working company list are treated here as the same company as FUJIFILM Cellular Dynamics (FCDI) in this article. The legal entity is FUJIFILM Cellular Dynamics, Inc. (FCDI). Its predecessor is Cellular Dynamics International (CDI, NASDAQ: ICEL), founded in 2004. FUJIFILM Holdings announced its acquisition in 2015, and the company was later renamed FCDI within the group. The parent is FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation (Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime, 4901). FUJIFILM Biotechnologies, covered in our cell culture company profiles, is a separate company. The logo is the image used in the header of the official website, downloaded and placed here; we have not recreated it with generated imagery.
Official site: https://www.fujifilmcdi.com/about-us/Its place in the FUJIFILM group
As far as we could confirm, the relationships inside the group are as follows.
| Organisation | Relationship to FCDI | How the source states it |
|---|---|---|
| FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation | The parent. FCDI falls in the consolidated Healthcare segment. The earnings release defines Healthcare as including CDMO work and drug discovery support such as iPS cells, culture media and reagents | Earnings release (year ended March 2026) |
| FUJIFILM Corporation Bio CDMO Division | In the May 2026 announcement of the opening, the head of the Life Science Strategy Headquarters and Bio CDMO Division of FUJIFILM Corporation itself provided a comment. The announcement does not state which division FCDI belongs to | Company announcement (May 2026) |
| FUJIFILM Biotechnologies (formerly FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies) | A separate subsidiary, mainly contract manufacturing of antibody medicines and similar products. The US$200 million investment of December 2023 covered two sites: FCDI in Madison and this company in Thousand Oaks, California | Fujifilm announcement (December 2023) |
| LS (Life Science) solutions business | Described in the earnings release as a business that includes drug discovery support such as iPS cells, culture media and reagents. FCDI's research cells (iCell) belong to this line | Earnings release (year ended March 2026) |
In other words, what the public materials show is that FCDI's cell therapy contract work sits in a different organisation from the large antibody-medicine CDMO (FUJIFILM Biotechnologies), and that the two share the US$200 million investment within the same group. FCDI's own revenue and headcount, however, appear nowhere, not even in the earnings release Not yet confirmed.
3. Where the company sits in the iPS cell and regenerative medicine landscape
Seen by mechanism, FCDI is on the side that makes iPS cells and hands them over. The issues covered in this series' explainers on iPS cells, cell manufacturing and cell banks, MHC and universal donor cells, GMP, CDMOs, and autologous versus allogeneic cells are, here, the business itself.
| Mechanism | How FCDI uses it | Category |
|---|---|---|
| Making iPS cells | Reprogrammed from body cells (blood) by the episomal method (reprogramming genes are introduced on circular DNA and do not integrate into the genome). The website explains that a blood draw is all that is needed | Sourced |
| GMP iPS cell lines | A master file is registered with the FDA. Cells have been differentiated into more than 30 cell types. The company says its inventory of HLA-typed donors is the largest in the industry | Sourced |
| Allogeneic (other-person-derived) and HLA matching | Supplies ready-made iPS cell lines from donors whose HLA type is known. In 2017 to 2018 it took part in a study of an HLA-matched bank with CIBMTR (ended because patients were slow to accrue) | Sourced |
| Contract development and manufacturing (CDMO) | Technology transfer, cell banking, clinical manufacturing, quality testing and support for IND filings. Manufactures cell therapies for partners in immuno-oncology, neurodegenerative disease and retinal disease | Sourced |
| Research cells (iCell) | Sells many differentiated cells, including heart muscle, neurons, liver and immune cells, from stock. Used for drug safety testing and disease models | Sourced |
| Genome editing | The company says it has set up a "genome editing centre of excellence" in the new building opened in May 2026 | Sourced |
4. Scale (a subsidiary of a large company)
FCDI's own revenue, profit and headcount do not appear in the materials we could confirm Not yet confirmed. We show the scale of the parent in a single table.
| FUJIFILM Holdings (year ended March 2026) | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ¥3.357 trillion (¥3,356,969 million) | +5.0% year on year |
| Operating profit | ¥350.2 billion (¥350,210 million) | +6.1% year on year |
| R&D expense (consolidated) | ¥157.8 billion (¥157,790 million) | -3.4% year on year |
| Healthcare segment revenue | ¥1.099 trillion (¥1,098,925 million) | +4.9% year on year |
| Healthcare segment operating profit | ¥63.6 billion (¥63,637 million) | -20.3% year on year |
| Healthcare segment R&D expense | ¥53.3 billion (¥53,346 million) | -12.9% year on year |
The figures above are for the FUJIFILM group as a whole and its Healthcare segment. They do not show the size of FCDI. For reference, when the acquisition was announced in March 2015, CDI had 155 employees and revenue of US$16.7 million for the year ended December 2014 Sourced. Its present scale is not disclosed Not yet confirmed.
5. Resources committed to iPS cells and regenerative medicine
We sort four points (people, money, outside investments, acquisitions and in-licensing, and links with universities and public funding) by whether the primary sources let us confirm them.
| Aspect | What the primary sources confirm | Status |
|---|---|---|
| People (sites and headcount) | Headquarters are in Madison. In the May 2026 announcement the management is given as Tomoyuki Hasegawa as CEO and Delara Motlagh as COO. FCDI's own headcount could not be confirmed (CDI had 155 in 2015) | Site confirmed. Headcount could not be confirmed |
| Money (capital investment) | A strategic investment of US$200 million (FCDI and a sister company's two sites combined). FCDI's new building is about 175,000 square feet (about 16,300 m², our calculation), expands cleanrooms from three to six, and quadruples capacity for research cells | Total confirmed. FCDI's share could not be confirmed |
| Outside investments, acquisitions and in-licensing | In 2015 FUJIFILM announced an agreement to acquire CDI for about US$307 million. FCDI received 2,980,803 shares of Century Therapeutics common stock (as consideration for a 2018 licence) | Confirmed |
| Universities, research institutions and public funding | Founder James Thomson is known as a stem cell researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (per the governor's remarks). An investigator-led trial with Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) of extracellular vesicles derived from cardiovascular progenitor cells. iPS cell products for CIRM are listed | Confirmed (contract terms could not be confirmed) |
FCDI's value lies in standardising cells as a "material" and selling them. The website points to (1) episomal reprogramming (no foreign genes remain in the genome), (2) an FDA master file, (3) ready-made GMP iPS cell lines from HLA-typed donors, and (4) a record of differentiation into more than 30 cell types Sourced. For a partner, being able to start from a cell line that has already been through review, without establishing and qualifying iPS cells again, saves both time and cost. The description of the facility mentions HEPA-filtered air, emergency power, storage at 2 to 8 °C, −20 °C, −70 °C and in liquid nitrogen, three independently operated GMP manufacturing suites, and quality control laboratories for cell line characterisation, PCR, and sterility and raw material testing Sourced.
Specific materials such as culture media, growth factors, cryopreservation media and scaffolds are not disclosed Not yet confirmed. In iPS cell differentiation, however, lot-to-lot differences in media and growth factors feed straight into differentiation efficiency, so the fact that FUJIFILM also has a business in culture media and reagents (the LS solutions line in the earnings release) could be a strength, because materials can be sourced within the same group (our view) Inference.
6. Track record so far
| When | What happened | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 2004 | Cellular Dynamics International (CDI) founded | Industrial-scale cell manufacturing by a stem cell researcher |
| July 2013 | CDI listed on NASDAQ (ICEL) | Revenue for the year ended December 2014 was US$16.7 million |
| 30 March 2015 | FUJIFILM announced an agreement to acquire CDI through an all-cash tender offer at US$16.5 per share (about US$307 million) | A company with strength in making and manufacturing iPS cells joined the FUJIFILM group |
| September 2018 | Signed a differentiation licence for immune cells (NK cells, T cells and others) and a reprogramming licence with Century Therapeutics. FCDI received 2,980,803 shares of the company | Joined the user of its cells through a licence and equity |
| October 2019 | Collaboration agreement with Century. A manufacturing agreement followed in March 2021 | Takes on work from research through clinical manufacturing |
| 2021 | Collaboration with BlueRock and Opsis on development and clinical manufacturing | Cell therapy for retinal disease |
| January 2023 | Novo Nordisk obtained a non-exclusive right to use FCDI's iPS cell platform (terms not disclosed) | Cell therapy for chronic disease. Supply to a large pharmaceutical company |
| September 2023 | Added a non-exclusive licence with Century for autoimmune and inflammatory disease | Broader target diseases |
| December 2023 | FUJIFILM announced a total investment of US$200 million in FCDI and a sister company | Manufacturing capacity to double (as described at the time) |
| January 2024 | Exclusive licence of OpCT-001 from FCDI and Opsis to BlueRock. In September 2024 the FDA cleared the IND (application to begin clinical trials) | FCDI handles clinical manufacturing at its GMP facility in Madison |
| 19 May 2026 | New building in Madison opened. Capacity for research cells quadrupled, and a genome editing centre established | A new headquarters and manufacturing site |
7. Plans ahead
The May 2026 announcement explains that the new building is designed for future demand for contract manufacturing of cell therapies and can be expanded from investigational products to commercial production Sourced. Neither FCDI's announcements nor its partners' filings say, however, when, or which partner's product, will enter commercial production Not yet confirmed.
None of the following appears in the primary sources Not yet confirmed.
FCDI's own revenue, profit and headcount / how the US$200 million is split / the actual royalty amounts with each partner / which products will enter commercial production, and when / the manufacturing volume for each partner. Press-based figures and research-firm estimates are not used in this article.
8. What the company is aiming for in iPS cells and regenerative medicine
This section includes things the company does not say directly. We set them out as inferences within what the primary sources support, with the evidence for each.
| What the evidence suggests | Primary information it rests on | Category |
|---|---|---|
| It aims to be a common factory for iPS cell-derived cell therapies | The company says partners use its iPS cell platform to advance therapeutic candidates in the clinic, and that it provides CDMO services | Sourced |
| It builds revenue on two pillars: research cells (iCell) and therapeutic cells | The 2026 building quadruples research cell capacity while also being designed for future demand for contract manufacturing of cell therapies | Sourced |
| It will keep to a policy of having no investigational drugs of its own | FCDI's announcements and website mention no clinical trial of its own. Its partners lead the trials | Inference |
| It is lowering dependence by spreading across several partners | Century, BlueRock/Opsis, Novo Nordisk and AP-HP, working in different disease areas, appear side by side | Inference |
| It is adding genome editing as a pillar of differentiation | The company says it has set up a genome editing centre of excellence in the new building | Inference |
According to Century's Form 10-Q, FCDI is involved with Century at three layers: licences (reprogramming, differentiation, autoimmune), a collaboration agreement and a manufacturing agreement, and it received Century shares as consideration for the 2018 licence. The deal has the structure of "rights to use the cell line", "technology transfer and manufacturing", and "milestones and royalties on success", so FCDI is designed to earn in line with its partner's success Sourced. The same 10-Q, however, states that there were no FCDI-related cash payments or R&D expenses in the first half of 2026, which shows the effect of a period in which the partner's activity has been scaled back Sourced. From this we read that adding partners and spreading across diseases and products is essential to FCDI's stability. The company has not explained it that way Inference.
9. Partnership map for iPS cells and regenerative medicine
FCDI's partnerships repeat the same pattern: FCDI supplies through licences and manufacturing, and the partner leads clinical development. BlueRock's OpCT-001 is a candidate that FCDI, together with Opsis, licensed to BlueRock, and FCDI is also the manufacturer for BlueRock's clinical trial, so three roles overlap Sourced. Read together with our BlueRock Therapeutics profile, this shows how the same candidate looks from each company's side.
10. The technologies and products it offers
FCDI's business divides into three main lines. None of them provides a product to patients as a treatment.
| Line of business | Description | Example partners |
|---|---|---|
| GMP iPS cell lines | GMP iPS cell lines reprogrammed by the episomal method, from donors whose HLA type is known. An FDA master file is registered. Research banks are also offered | Century, Novo Nordisk, BlueRock (OpCT-001) |
| Contract development and manufacturing of cell therapies | Technology transfer, cell banking, clinical manufacturing, quality testing and support for IND filings. Immuno-oncology, neurodegenerative disease and retinal disease | Century, BlueRock |
| Research cells (iCell) | Heart muscle, neurons (including dopamine neurons), liver and immune cells, and disease-model cells. For target discovery and safety testing in drug development | Pharmaceutical companies and research institutions |
| Extracellular vesicles (EVs) | Extracellular vesicles derived from cardiovascular progenitor cells. AP-HP is running an investigator-led trial in non-ischaemic heart failure | AP-HP (Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris) |
The FCDI website says its proprietary manufacturing system produces billions of cells a day, supplied both as stock items and as donor-specific products Sourced. From a materials standpoint, quality is decided by (1) the reagents used for reprogramming, such as circular DNA, (2) the media and growth factors that guide differentiation, (3) cryopreservation media and containers, and (4) incoming testing for sterility and raw materials. Because lot-to-lot variation in these feeds straight into differentiation efficiency and purity, testing and records for each lot (traceability) are the foundation supporting a partner's IND filing (this is our explanation; the company does not disclose material names).
11. The risks this company carries
| Risk | Details | Category |
|---|---|---|
| Tied to partners' success or failure | FCDI has no investigational drugs of its own, and its revenue comes from licences, manufacturing, milestones and royalties, so it shrinks if a partner's development stops | Sourced |
| Partners scaling back | Century states there were no FCDI-related cash payments in the first half of 2026. Spending on its CNTY-101 trial has fallen | Sourced |
| No standalone disclosure | FCDI's revenue and profit cannot be seen on their own, even in the parent's results. Profitability cannot be verified from outside | Not yet confirmed |
| Competition and technological change | Other companies also supply iPS cells and offer contract manufacturing, so how far a cell line stands out depends on the terms of each deal (our view) | Inference |
| Experience with commercial production | The new building is designed to expand to commercial production, but we could not confirm any record of commercial supply in the primary sources | Not yet confirmed |
| The group's earnings environment | Operating profit in the Healthcare segment fell 20.3% year on year. The main reason was higher raw material costs (the price of silver), which does not point directly at the iPS cell business | Sourced |
