COMPANY PROFILE / NANOTECHNOLOGY
OCSiAl
A Luxembourg materials company that makes single-walled carbon nanotubes (TUBALL) at scale, for use as a tiny-dose additive in batteries, plastics and coatings
OCSiAl is a nanomaterial producer that synthesizes and sells single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) under the brand TUBALL. It describes itself as the world's largest SWCNT producer. Besides powder, it supplies forms that are easier to use: dispersions for lithium-ion battery electrodes and concentrates for plastics and coatings. The company is headquartered in Luxembourg and is privately held. Its sales, profit and shareholders could not be confirmed from official materials. By its own figures, the plant in Serbia that opened in October 2024 has a nameplate capacity of 60 tonnes a year. In November 2025 it announced a new plant in Differdange, Luxembourg, with a planned investment of US$300 million and a staged start between 2028 and 2030. Drawing on the company's website and press releases, the TUBALL technical pages and the U.S. Federal Register, this article sets out what could be confirmed and what could not, and explains from a materials engineer's view why such a small dose can matter.

LuxembourgRegistered address: 1, rue de la Poudrerie, L-3364 Leudelange. The company says it was founded in Luxembourg in 2010
(single-walled CNTs)Primary type. Supplies powders, dispersions and concentrates; does not make end products
TUBALL (brand)The company calls them “graphene nanotubes”. Mean outer diameter 1.6±0.4 nm, length of 5 µm or more (manufacturer's stated value)
60 t/year nameplateOpened October 2024. A new plant is planned in Differdange, Luxembourg (staged start 2028-2030)
OCSiAl's strength is that it ships single-walled CNTs as a low-dose additive, in quantities and forms that battery and plastics makers can use. According to the company, SWCNTs are thinner and longer than multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs), and properties begin to change at loadings of around 0.01% (the company's comparison; test conditions are not given on the page) Sourced. On the other hand, sales, profit and shareholders could not be confirmed, and phrases such as "world's largest" or "only" are all the company's own description. Its capacities (60 t a year in Serbia, up to 100 t planned in Luxembourg) are company nameplate figures and plans; actual shipments and utilization are not published Not yet confirmed.
2. Logo and naming

The logo is the image published on the company's official website (ocsial.com): white lettering with the carbon symbol "C" in a green block. It is taken as it is and placed on a dark background because the lettering is white. It has not been recreated with generated images.
Naming: the company is OCSiAl (capital O, C and S, lowercase i, capital A, lowercase l). The website is published by OCSiAl International S.à r.l. of Luxembourg. TUBALL (TUBALL™) is the brand name of its SWCNT products and is separate from the company name. The company also calls SWCNTs "graphene nanotubes", but they are what is generally called single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs); the company uses both terms side by side.

8. What the company is aiming for in nanotechnology
This section includes points the company does not state directly. They are given as inferences drawn from the primary sources, with the basis.
| What can be read | Primary basis | Status |
|---|---|---|
| The mission is to make SWCNTs a common additive that can be put in small amounts into almost any material | Website: the mission is to improve all materials and lower the "price per property". It claims applications across up to 50% of global materials markets (marked as based on estimates by a leading management consulting firm) | Sourced (company description) |
| For now the main battlefield is conductive additives for lithium-ion batteries, and the company is firming up supply to European battery plants | Supply to PowerCo (2026), expansion of the Serbian plant, the new Luxembourg plant, the statement that it supplies most European EV battery makers, research on electric aircraft batteries | Inference |
| It aims to be a supplier that meets European automotive and battery requirements through local sourcing and regulatory readiness | Release: from Serbia, it says it increases local sourcing of critical battery materials in Europe; it passed PowerCo's audits; REACH and EPA compliance | Inference |
| Its differentiator is to supply dispersions and concentrates, not only powder, so customers can use it in existing processes | Product page: powders, dispersions, concentrates; licences for distributors to make dispersions, and supply of special mixing equipment | Sourced (company description) |
The reason for reading batteries as the main battlefield is that the official announcements lean heavily toward batteries. The October 2024 Serbia release described its dispersion capacity as "65 GWh of batteries" and named, among its main customers, makers of cells with silicon-rich anodes, fast-charging graphite, ultra-thick cathodes and semi-solid batteries. The November 2025 Luxembourg plan, the June 2026 PowerCo supply and the September 2026 ELEVATE project are all about batteries. For plastics and coatings, the most recent announcement is a single one, PV PAINT (August 2026); the product range is wide (Tuball MATRIX 201-204 and others), but the share of sales by use is not disclosed. So it cannot be confirmed whether batteries account for most of sales. This is our reading of the content of the announcements Not yet confirmed.
9. Partnership map for nanotechnology
OCSiAl's relationships center on supply to battery makers and carmaker groups, and joint development with European research bodies; no acquisitions or joint ventures appear. Customers named publicly are few, such as PowerCo and PV PAINT, and the breakdown behind the claim of supplying "most European EV battery makers" cannot be confirmed from official materials Not yet confirmed.
10. Technologies, products and services
The following draws on the company's website and the TUBALL technical pages. All values are the manufacturer's stated values, with the test method given alongside. They do not show superiority over any other maker's product Sourced.
| Item | Manufacturer's stated value | Test method (as the company states it) |
|---|---|---|
| Number of walls | 1 | Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) |
| Outer diameter (mean) | 1.6±0.4 nm | Optical absorption; ISO/TS 10868:2017 |
| Length | 5 µm or more | Atomic force microscopy (AFM) |
| CNT content | 80 wt% or more (standard grade; powder grades range from 80% to 99.5%) | OCSiAl internal method (ash residue) |
| Metal impurities | 15 wt% or less | OCSiAl internal method, ICP-AES |
| Moisture | Under 5% | OCSiAl internal method, infrared thermogravimetry |
| G/D ratio (indicator of defects) | Above 90 (shown as "nominal value 90, up to 120") | Raman spectroscopy (532 nm) |
| Specific surface area | About 1,200 m²/g or more | Method not stated |
Products come in four forms (company product pages).
| Form | Examples | Use and medium (company description) |
|---|---|---|
| Powder | TUBALL; high-purity TUBALL | Energy storage, paints and coatings, resins and composites, elastomers |
| Dispersions | Tuball BATT (anode: water with CMC and others; cathode: NMP with PVDF and others), Tuball LATEX, Tuball COAT_E | Conductive additive for lithium-ion batteries; latex; coatings |
| Concentrates (paste, pellets) | Tuball MATRIX 201-204 (plasticizer-based) | Epoxy, polyurethane, polyester and other resins and coatings. The company says they can be used without changing formulations or processes |
| Licences and equipment | Licences for distributors to make dispersions and concentrates; supply of special mixing equipment | The company's Partners page |
Example loadings are also published (test conditions, base materials and standards are not given on the page, so please do not compare them with values obtained under other conditions).
| Use | Loading and effect shown by the company |
|---|---|
| Silicon anode of a lithium-ion battery | 0.05% raises battery cycle life by up to 4 times |
| ABS plastic | 0.03% improves impact resistance and gives antistatic properties |
| Pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) film | 0.04% gives stable antistatic properties while keeping transparency |
| Tire rubber | 0.1% improves grip and durability |
| Aluminium | Tensile strength and Young's modulus both up by 100% |
(1) The effect comes from a thin, long shape and a connected network. In the company's data, the mean outer diameter is about 1.6 nm and the length is 5 µm or more. It says the aspect ratio (length divided by diameter) exceeds 3,000. When thin, long, conductive particles touch one another inside a resin or an electrode, they form a path for electricity (a conductive network) even at a small amount. The reason the company writes "effective from 0.01%" is likely this shape (a general explanation; the company also says a three-dimensional network forms). The company compares this with multi-walled CNTs and granular carbon black, which it says need larger amounts for the same conductivity (0.5-5% and 20-40%). The required amount changes with the base material and test method, so this article does not judge the figures against one another. See our explainers on carbon nanotubes and on graphene.
(2) Purity and defects are separate measures. The company's standard grade has a CNT content of 80 wt% or more and metal impurities of 15 wt% or less. The metal is probably leftover catalyst, but its website does not describe the synthesis method or the catalyst, so this is an inference. For uses such as batteries, where metal impurities can matter, it offers high-purity grades up to 99.5% content (the allowable level for each use is not public). The G/D ratio is a Raman-based indicator of defects; a larger value is generally taken to mean higher crystallinity, with fewer defects. The company states above 90, but which sample the value represents and how much it varies between lots is not published.
(3) The hard part of productization is "unbundling". The company itself explains that SWCNTs are thin and flexible and tend to clump into bundles in order to lower their surface energy. A bundle cannot form the network, so the step that loosens bundles and spreads them evenly in a liquid or resin decides performance. Offering water-based and NMP-based dispersions with dispersants such as CMC, and concentrates kneaded into plasticizers, reads as a way to spare customers from reproducing this step themselves (inference). Numbers for the type of dispersant and the degree of dispersion are not public.
(4) Safety and regulation should not be generalized. The company says TUBALL tends to form bundles and agglomerates and cannot become respirable, and it cites workplace measurement case studies (under 5% of the NIOSH recommended exposure limit of 1 µg/m³). On the other hand, the U.S. EPA rule of 2019 sets conditions of use for SWCNTs (generic), including workplace protection such as respirators with a NIOSH assigned protection factor of at least 50. It cannot be said that something is safe or hazardous simply because it is nano; whether a given task is acceptable has to be checked against each country's rules and the product's safety data sheet (this article is not individual advice). See also our explainer on the definition and regulation of nanomaterials.
11. Risks
| Risk | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Opaque finances | Sales, profit, debt, R&D spending and shareholders cannot be confirmed from official materials. How the US$300 million plant will be financed is also undisclosed. This article cannot assess financial health | Not confirmed |
| Capacity track record is not visible | All capacities are nameplate figures or plans. Whether the second unit in Serbia is running, and when "fourfold" will happen, cannot be confirmed. "Largest" and "only" are the company's own description | Sourced (company description) / Not yet confirmed |
| Concentration in uses and customers | Announcements lean toward batteries. If adoption of battery designs (silicon anodes, dry electrodes, solid-state cells and so on) is slow, demand for conductive additives could be affected. Sales by customer are not disclosed | Inference |
| Regulatory change | Under EU REACH, the company says it raised its volume band to 100 t a year in 2020. Whether that registered volume is enough for current output (60 t a year, with several times that planned) could not be confirmed from official materials. The U.S. SNUR sets conditions of use (respirators, limits on uses). Nanomaterial rules and definitions can be revised | Sourced (company description) / not confirmed |
| Updated health and environmental assessments | The company says its tubes fall under the IARC classification Group 3, but that is a classification at the time of assessment and can change with new evidence. This article does not generalize about safety | Sourced (company description) |
| Geographic concentration | Production is concentrated at one site in Serbia (the November 2025 release says nanotubes are "currently produced only in Serbia"). The company's materials do not discuss risks in raw materials, power or logistics | Sourced / Inference |
| Competitors and substitutes | Competition from other SWCNT makers and from substitute conductive additives such as multi-walled CNTs and carbon black. Competitor movements are not in the company's materials and this article does not assess them | Inference |
| Delay of the new plant | For Luxembourg, the land lease is confirmed, but construction, equipment orders and permits could not be confirmed. The 2028 start is a company plan | Not yet confirmed |
