COMPANY PROFILE / NEXT-GEN ENERGY STORAGE
BYD
A vertically integrated battery business that extends the LFP "Blade Battery" behind its own vehicles to outside automakers and to energy storage systems
BYD makes new energy vehicles, electronic components, batteries and solar products, and batteries are one business inside the group. The annual report does not give batteries a separate revenue line, so battery volumes and revenue are not disclosed in the material this article reviewed. It does state that energy storage system deliveries exceeded 60 GWh in 2025, and it names the second-generation Blade Battery (announced March 2026) and Haohan, a storage system of 14.5 MWh per unit built on a 2,710 Ah storage-specific cell. This article leaves the vehicle business aside and covers batteries (the LFP Blade Battery) and storage systems, setting out what it makes, where it invests, who it works with, and which parts are results and which are plans from its Hong Kong and Shenzhen filings, official material and government documents. Solid-state batteries are covered in a separate field of this series and are not discussed here. It is not investment advice.

1. BYD in 30 seconds, and where it stands in next-generation energy storage
Shenzhen 002594Hong Kong has HKD and RMB counters; Shenzhen has the A shares
Storage systems (secondary)Centered on LFP (Blade Battery); sodium-ion storage demonstration as well. The vehicle business is not covered here
BYD's batteries sit in the same reporting segment as its vehicle business, so their revenue and profit cannot be seen on their own. The annual report defines that segment ("Automobiles, related products and other products") to include automotive traction batteries, lithium-ion batteries and photovoltaic products Sourced. BYD's batteries therefore have to be read not from "how much was sold" but from announced products, deliveries, contracts and plans. The company says that, after fully meeting the traction-battery needs of its own new energy vehicles, it is extending supply to outside strategic customers Sourced. The names and volumes of those customers are not disclosed in the material this article reviewed.
2. The logo and how the name is written

A note on names: the formal name is BYD Company Limited. Blade Battery, Haohan and FLASH Charging are product and technology brand names. The annual report refers to the battery business as "rechargeable batteries"; this article does not name any battery subsidiary within the group, because none appears in the material reviewed. The logo was taken from the company's official website (a small, low-resolution image).

7. What comes next
Of the above, the results are "7,018 operating FLASH stations" and "the start of Haohan deliveries"; the rest are company targets or directions Not yet confirmed.
None of the following appears in the official material this article reviewed Not yet confirmed.
Battery and storage revenue, profit and sales volume (GWh); the names of automakers supplied with traction batteries; locations and capacity of battery plants; the cell specification and shipped volume of sodium-ion; the figure for the Blade Battery's gravimetric energy density at cell level; and the amount of impact of export controls and tariffs on batteries.
8. What the company is aiming for in next-generation energy storage
This chapter separates what the company says directly from what we infer. Inference marks our reading of the primary sources.
| What can be read | Primary-source basis | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Batteries are an in-house part supporting its own cars, with external sales being widened | "After fully meeting its own demand for traction batteries, expanding to external strategic customers" (annual and interim reports). Battery revenue sits in the same segment as vehicles | Sourced |
| In storage it holds everything from cell to system in-house | The interim report says it has built a system of "full-stack in-house R&D, end-to-end supply and mass production" from 3C (cell, power chip, compute chip) to 3S (BESS, PCS, EMS) | Sourced |
| It is enlarging cells to cut system component count | The company says Haohan uses a 2,710 Ah cell with a 14.5 MWh minimum unit and 52.1% volume utilization. The datasheet gives up to 14,568 kWh per unit | Sourced / Inference |
| Sodium-ion is being run in parallel as a technology hedge for storage | The interim report cites sodium-ion storage as "diversified technology reserves" to strengthen medium- and long-term technological resilience; no volumes or customers are given | Sourced / Inference |
| The scale of external battery sales cannot be measured from outside for now | External customer names, volumes and revenue are undisclosed; only storage deliveries (over 60 GWh) appear as a volume | Inference Not yet confirmed |
The inference that it is enlarging cells to cut component count rests on how Haohan is described. The company says it uses a 2,710 Ah storage-specific cell, with 10 MWh per 20-foot equivalent and 52.1% volume utilization Sourced. The datasheet likewise gives up to 14,568 kWh per unit, a design that puts more energy in the same footprint. We read this as larger cells reducing the cells, connections and enclosures needed for the same energy and so cutting installation and maintenance effort, but no primary source gives the cost saving or failure rates. In general, bigger cells also bring other challenges, such as uneven internal heating and manufacturing yield, so this is an inference about the company's aim Inference Not yet confirmed.
9. Map of partnerships in next-generation energy storage
10. Technologies, products and services
BYD's battery and storage products span cells, packs and storage systems Sourced. The performance values below are manufacturer's stated values; values under different conditions are not compared.
| Product | What the material says (manufacturer's stated values) | Ref. |
|---|---|---|
| Blade Battery (first generation) | Long, flat LFP cells nested in a honeycomb arrangement without intermediate modules. In the nail penetration test, no smoke or fire and a surface temperature of 30-60 °C (official page). Cycle life is stated as over 5,000 cycles with no test conditions given. Pack space utilization is over 50% higher than conventional LFP block-type batteries (company statement) | 4 |
| Blade Battery (second generation) | Over 5% higher energy density than the first generation, supporting a range above 1,000 km (annual report). At normal temperature 10 to 70% in 5 minutes and 10 to 97% in 9 minutes; 20 to 97% in 12 minutes at -30 °C. A "lithium-ion high-speed channel" and "full-spectrum intelligent thermal management" are said to limit heat generation (no detail given). Safety is said to exceed the new national standard | 1, 3 |
| Haohan | An LFP storage system. DC block nominal energy is 7,284 kWh (XN2C-B7284) and 14,568 kWh (XN4C-B14568, two configurations), nominal power 1,820-3,642 kW, IP66, liquid cooling, noise up to 75 dBA, operating range -30 to +55 °C. Compliance lists IEC 62619, IEC 62620, IEC 63056, UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 1973, UN 38.3 and others | 5 |
| FLASH charger | A single connector of 1,500 kW, combined with a super fast-discharging storage system to charge at high power without adding to grid load | 1, 2, 3 |

The company's material shows where materials matter. (1) LFP chemistry: the official page says LFP is a stable chemistry that releases little oxygen and generates little heat Sourced. This is a property generally associated with olivine-structure LFP, but the nail penetration result is the company's own test, not a pass in a standard test. (2) The long, thin cell shape: the company says a long, thin cell has a large surface area relative to volume and sheds heat easily Sourced, and dropping modules raises space utilization. How the electrodes are wound or stacked and what current collectors are used are not described in the material reviewed Inference. (3) Larger storage cells: for a 2,710 Ah cell, electrode thickness and uniformity, electrolyte wetting and internal temperature distribution are probably the keys to quality, but the company gives no figures for them Inference Not yet confirmed. For the basics, see our explainers on cathode materials, cell formats and cell-to-pack, and thermal runaway and battery safety.
11. The risks this company carries
| Risk | Details | Type |
|---|---|---|
| The battery business is not visible from outside | Battery revenue, profit, volumes, plant capacity and outside customers are undisclosed, making progress hard to verify. Storage shipment rankings rest on research-firm data, which this article does not use | Sourced (not found) |
| Dependence on its own vehicle business | Batteries are built first to meet its own vehicles' demand. In the first half of 2026 group revenue fell 7.13% year on year and automotive-related revenue 8.98% (the company attributes it mainly to lower new energy vehicle business). A change in vehicle demand could affect battery utilization | Sourced / Inference |
| China's export control | Announcement No. 58 of 2025 made lithium-ion batteries of 300 Wh/kg and above (cells and packs) and manufacturing equipment subject to export licensing, effective 8 November 2025, but Announcement No. 70 (7 November 2025) suspended it until 10 November 2026. What follows the suspension is not stated. BYD's cell-level energy density is not given in the material reviewed, so its relation to the threshold could not be confirmed | Sourced (stages: issued, then due to take effect, then suspended) |
| U.S. tariffs | The U.S. Trade Representative gave notice (Federal Register, 18 September 2024) that the Section 301 additional tariff on lithium-ion batteries would rise to 25% from 1 January 2026 for non-EV batteries and from 27 September 2024 for EV batteries. Other tariffs may add to it, and the current combined rate was not verified for this article. BYD's battery sales to the U.S. were not found | Sourced (stage: published, with effective dates) |
| Delivery of plans | The 20,000 FLASH stations are an end-2026 target, with 7,018 operating at end-June. Sodium-ion next-generation products are in development, and no battery-plant expansion plan is disclosed | Not yet confirmed |
| Conditions behind performance values | Charging times, cycle life and safety tests are the company's stated values and in-house tests, and details of vehicle, charger, temperature and method are limited to the releases. Values of different companies or products cannot be compared | Sourced |
