COMPANY PROFILE / PEROVSKITE SOLAR CELLS

Renshine Solar
A Nanjing University spin-out that holds records in all-perovskite tandems, stacking perovskite on perovskite

Renshine Solar is a Chinese perovskite start-up founded at the end of 2021. Its founder and chairman, Tan Hairen, is a professor at Nanjing University, and the company is known for work with the university on "all-perovskite tandems", which stack two perovskite layers and use no silicon at all. NLR's (formerly NREL's) efficiency data list a cell record of 30.1% for this approach (jointly credited with Nanjing University) and a module record of 22.8% for the same approach. On the business side, though, what it actually produces and ships is a glass-type single-junction module measuring 1.2 m × 0.6 m, made on a 150 MW line, while a GW-scale line is under construction. Drawing on the company's own announcements, this profile sets out both the cutting-edge research and the slower build-up of a volume product.

The one thing to grasp first

Companies working on perovskite solar cells fall into three broad types: established PV makers, perovskite start-ups, and materials and electronics firms coming in from other industries. Renshine Solar is a perovskite start-up, and one born in a university laboratory Sourced. Where established makers such as LONGi and Trina Solar stack perovskite on top of silicon, Renshine's signature technology is the all-perovskite tandem, which uses no silicon and instead stacks two perovskites with different properties. What it actually sells today, however, is a glass-type single-junction module (a single perovskite layer). Keep in mind that the headline research and the volume product are two different things.

2. The logo and how the name is written

The logo is the company's trademark. Rather than recreate it with an image generator, this article uses the logo image from the header of the official website, saved as img/renshine_solar_logo.png. The logo's lettering is white, so it is shown on a dark background.

A note on names: the legal entity is registered in Chinese, and its name corresponds to Renshine Solar (Suzhou) Co., Ltd.; the lettering in the logo reads RENSHINE SOLAR. The company says its research base, the Jiangsu Perovskite Industrial Technology Research Institute, is built on a separate legal entity, Jiangsu Renshine Photovoltaic Technology Co., Ltd. This article uses the English brand name, Renshine Solar, throughout.

3. Where the company sits in the perovskite solar cell field

Three types of company working on perovskite solar cells All of them "work on perovskites", yet their origins and aims could hardly differ more Established PV makers Perovskite start-ups Materials & electronics firms Build on silicon mass production Compete on perovskites alone Enter with skills from other fields LONGi / JinkoSolar Trina Solar / Hanwha Qcells, etc. Oxford PV / Swift Solar EneCoat / Renshine Solar, etc. Sekisui Chemical / Panasonic Toshiba / Kaneka, etc. Already own sales and factories Can lead on sharp technology Film, glass and sealing know-how Silicon remains the core business High hurdles: scale-up, funding Thin sales channels for solar Renshine Solar: a Nanjing University spin-out in the middle, known for all-perovskite tandem records It makes single-junction glass modules on a 150 MW line; its GW-scale line was being built as of August 2026
Fig. 1 The three types of company working on perovskite solar cells, and where Renshine Solar sits. The classification is our own, and the companies shown are examples drawn from those covered in this series Our calculation. The status of the production lines is based on Renshine Solar's August 2026 news item (remarks by its president); the cell record is based on NLR's cell efficiency data table.

The company has four product lines Sourced: (1) glass-type single-junction modules (1.2 m × 0.6 m; the mainstay of production); (2) all-perovskite tandems (the headline research; a two-terminal stacked design); (3) perovskite/silicon tandems (it has announced a four-terminal module record and supplied the roof of a factory in Lijiang); and (4) flexible modules (the company says above 18% for single-junction modules of about a square metre). Its curtain-wall equipment for BIPV (building-integrated photovoltaics) was added in 2026 to Jiangsu Province's "Three Firsts, Two News" list of recognised new equipment and products.

4. Scale (unlisted, so read the production lines)

Why the usual revenue table cannot be built

Renshine Solar is unlisted and does not publish its revenue, profit or loss, headcount or the amounts it has raised Not yet confirmed. Instead, this section gauges its size from the scale of the production lines and the investment amounts that the company has announced.

LineWhat it isWhen
10 MW research pilot lineDescribed by the company as "the world's first research line for all-perovskite tandems". Produces 30 cm × 40 cm modulesFully running from February 2023
150 MW production lineIn Changshu. Produces 1.2 m × 0.6 m single-junction modules. Equipment 100% made in China and designed in house. About nine months from groundbreakingConstruction began April 2023; completed 11 January 2024
GW-scale lineIn the Changshu Economic and Technological Development Zone. Total investment of more than CNY 1 billion, with expected annual output value above CNY 2 billion once completeAgreement signed 28 May 2024; construction began on 20 February 2025 together with the headquarters. As of August 2026, "construction has started"
ItemWhat has been published
PatentsMore than 130 core patent applications (company profile page), up from more than 60 as of May 2024
MarketsThe company says its business extends to the United States, Japan, India, France, South Korea, Germany and elsewhere
Largest installationsIts own 1.2 MW rooftop plant (9,300 modules) and a BIPV roof on a former factory in Shanghai (about 6,000 modules, more than 4,000 m²)
Revenue, profit or loss, headcount, funds raisedNot disclosed
Our calculation: how many modules can 150 MW make?

The 1.2 m × 0.6 m production module is rated at 158.4 W for the high-efficiency version announced in June 2026, and averaged 130 W at the 1.2 MW plant in 2024 Sourced. Dividing 150 MW by 130 W gives about 1.15 million modules, and by 158.4 W about 950,000, as a rough annual ceiling Our calculation. The Shanghai BIPV roof (about 6,000 modules) is 0.5 to 0.6% of that, showing that even a single large project is small relative to the line's capacity. Utilisation and shipments are not published, so this is a guide based on maximum capacity, not actual output.

Reading the record numbers

Three records could be confirmed in third-party tables Sourced. NLR's cell efficiency data table lists an all-perovskite tandem by "Nanjing Univ / Renshine" at 30.1% (JET, 0.04934 cm²). NLR's champion module efficiency chart lists the perovskite two-junction module record of 22.8% (Renshine) and the perovskite single-junction module record of 22.1% (Renshine/Nanjing U). The 30.1% cell is a research device smaller than 0.05 cm², and its efficiency is not that of a production product. The efficiency of the production module (0.72 m²) has risen from 17.2% measured by NREL in 2024 to above 22% as reported by the company in 2026. Note also that the timeline on the company profile page shows the same content as 2025 repeated under 2021 and 2022 (probably a display fault on the site), so this article uses only those timeline items whose dates are backed up by individual news items.

7. What comes next

GW-SCALE LINEUnder constructionAs of August 2026. No start date published
FUTURE OF THE 150 MW LINEConversion to all-perovskite tandemsStated at completion in January 2024. Timing not published
SPACEFlexible all-perovskite tandemsA Jiangsu provincial major project. Also involved in standardisation work for space photovoltaics
LISTINGPreparatory stageAsked for listing support at a provincial meeting for emerging technology companies (August 2026)

At an August 2026 meeting of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Science and Technology, president Chen Baoyin said that "the 150 MW production line is shipping steadily and construction of the GW-scale mass-production line has begun", and that the company is "at a crucial stage of moving from technological leadership to market leadership". He asked for government support on listing, industrial support and more sites for demonstration Sourced. When the GW-scale line agreement was signed in 2024, the company said "annual output value will exceed CNY 2 billion once complete" Not yet confirmed, but it has given no date for operation.

What could not be confirmed

None of the following appears in Renshine Solar's official announcements Not yet confirmed.

Revenue, profit or loss, and shipments; amounts raised and investors; headcount; the start date and actual investment of the GW-scale line; when mass production of all-perovskite tandems will start; and product prices. Press reports give figures for investment and planned start-up, but some do not match the company's announcements, and this article does not use them.

8. What the company is aiming for in perovskite solar cells

This section goes beyond what the company says directly. It sets out inferences that can be drawn from primary sources, each with its basis.

What can be readPrimary evidence behind itCategory
A two-step plan: earn with single-junction modules, then leap ahead with all-perovskite tandemsProduction and sales are of the 1.2 m × 0.6 m single-junction module. At completion, the company said the 150 MW line would later be converted to all-perovskite tandemsInference
The first markets are buildings (BIPV) and distributed generationThe Shanghai factory roof, provincial recognition of its BIPV curtain-wall equipment, the partnership with China Architecture Design & Research Group, and carports and homes: most installations are building-relatedInference
It is staking out space as a long-term, high-value marketThe outside-the-cabin test on Shenzhou-23, the provincial major project on flexible tandems for space, and participation in standardisation work for space photovoltaicsInference
It sells by showing, with field data, that its modules generate more than siliconAt the Lianyungang demonstration plant, the company reported that energy yield per unit over four months was higher than the N-type and P-type silicon references, and 15% higher on cloudy daysSourced (operating data published by the company)
It is aiming for a listing before longIn August 2026 it attended a provincial meeting on nurturing listing candidates as a representative "emerging technology company" and asked for listing supportInference
One inference, explained in full

The January 2024 announcement of the 150 MW line's completion ends by saying that "this line will later be converted to produce higher-efficiency all-perovskite tandem products" Sourced. In an all-perovskite tandem, both the upper and lower layers are perovskite, and no silicon wafer is used. That raises the possibility of lifting efficiency by adding layers on the same glass substrates and the same coating and evaporation equipment used for single-junction modules. This article reads Renshine as mapping out a path in which it first secures equipment, yields and sales channels through single-junction production, then runs tandems on the same line Not yet confirmed. The narrow-bandgap lead-tin perovskite used as the lower layer oxidises easily, however, and the company itself, in presenting its Nature paper, names "film uniformity over large areas and charge transport" as challenges. No date for the conversion has been given, and this remains our interpretation.

10. Technology, products and services

Product or technologyWhat the primary sources say
Single-junction modules (mainstay)1.2 m × 0.6 m. "Shuodian 2.0" reaches above 22% full-area efficiency and 158.4 W (TÜV SÜD). Certified or registered under IEC 61215/61730 (TÜV Rheinland), UL, CQC and JP-AC
BIPVOffers integrated solutions from roofs and curtain walls to fences and daylighting roofs. Its complete equipment set for commercial perovskite BIPV curtain walls was included in Jiangsu's 2026 "Three Firsts, Two News" list of new technologies and products
All-perovskite tandemsA two-terminal design stacking a wide-bandgap perovskite and a narrow-bandgap (lead-tin) perovskite. Cells at 30.1%; modules from 22.8% to 26.4% (depending on area)
Perovskite/silicon tandems31.7% on a four-terminal module (384.02 cm², TÜV SÜD). Supplied to a green hydrogen plant in Lijiang (118.4 kWp) and to an agrivoltaic project by Beijing Energy Holding in Yanqing, Beijing
FlexibleAbove 18% for single-junction modules of about a square metre and above 23% for large-area all-perovskite tandems (company-reported). Under development for space
Manufacturing technologyFilm formation in ambient air using safe, bio-derived solvents (Science), and large-area surface passivation using "floating organic salts" and lead carboxylates (Nature, August 2026)
A materials engineer's view: solvents and surfaces lifted production efficiency

The efficiency of the 0.72 m² production module rose from 17.2% (NREL, 2024) to 22.0% (2026, the certified value published in Nature). According to the company, two things made the biggest difference Sourced. The first is the solvent: a high-vapour-pressure blend of 2-methoxyethanol, 1,3-dioxolane and DMSO, combined with vacuum drying, makes a layer rich in formamidinium iodide (FAI) rise naturally to the surface of the film. The second is surface passivation: instead of moisture-sensitive ammonium compounds, chemically stable lead carboxylates are reacted with that layer.

The problems on a large area are that a treatment that works on a small cell does not work evenly across a full square metre, and that films are exposed to moisture in the ambient air of a factory. The idea of "first letting reaction sites line up naturally at the surface, then treating them with a moisture-resistant material" comes from re-selecting materials to fit the conditions of the coating process, and it is a good example of materials design built around mass production. For the principles of solution coating, see also our explainer on solution-processed film deposition.
