INSTITUTION PROFILE / OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS & PHOTONICS
OFC (Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition)
The one week a year when optical communications research and products gather in one place
OFC is an international conference and exhibition on optical communications, held in the United States every March. It is managed by Optica, the U.S.-based optics and photonics society, and co-sponsored by two IEEE societies, the Communications Society (ComSoc) and the Photonics Society. OFC 2026 in Los Angeles drew about 18,000 attendees and 706 exhibitors. It sets no standards and hands out no money, but because new optical transceivers, CPO and optical fibre research results and products are all unveiled in the same week, it has become the place that shows where the industry's attention is heading. This profile looks at one question only: how much influence OFC actually has over optical communications and photonics.

1. OFC in 30 seconds
OFC is a venue that decides nothing. It has no power to write standards or to hand out research funding. It still carries weight because research (peer-reviewed papers), products (the exhibition) and standards bodies' demonstrations all come together in the same week. At OFC 2026, OIF staged interoperability demonstrations with 40 member companies, and ITU-T Study Group 15 held a session during the event Sourced. The organisers named the technical themes of OFC 2026 as AI infrastructure, the step up in lane speeds from 224G to 448G, the commercialisation of 1.6T, and low-power optical architectures such as CPO, NPO and optical I/O.
2. What kind of body it is: the four types of influence
Unlike the companies in this series, the institutions that appear in our optical communications and photonics coverage do not sell optical components. What separates them is the route by which they influence the industry, and that gives four types.
3. What it does in optical communications and photonics
OFC's programme falls into four broad parts. Details of OFC 2026 come from the organisers' releases Sourced.
| Programme | What it covers | Examples from OFC 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Technical conference (peer-reviewed) | Research papers, invited talks and tutorials. On the final day, the latest results submitted after the normal deadline (post-deadline papers) are presented | 130 invited and tutorial talks. Post-deadline papers included work on barium titanate enabling 1.6T on silicon photonics |
| Exhibition | Makers of optical components, modules, systems, optical fibre and test equipment show their products | 706 exhibitors. CPO and optical I/O for scale-up, 1.6T and 3.2T coherent transmission, photonic integrated circuits, 800G and 1.6T test equipment, and hollow-core fibre |
| Industry programme on the show floor | Talks in three theatres, covering market trends, network operators and data centres | 45 sessions in total across Market Watch, the Network Operator Summit and the Data Center Summit |
| Demonstrations and sessions by standards bodies | Standards bodies demonstrate interoperability on site and explain the progress of their work | OIF's largest-ever demonstration, connecting about 100 coherent modules from 15 companies. ITU-T SG15 held a session on 19 March |
The organisers listed hollow-core fibre among the exhibition themes of OFC 2026, alongside CPO and optical I/O, and the post-deadline papers included work on 1.6T using barium titanate on silicon photonics Sourced. Following the order in which a new material moves at OFC from research paper to exhibition stand gives a rough sense of how close it is to practical use. That said, being presented at OFC does not mean a product is in volume production or has been adopted (this is our own view).
4. How far its influence reaches (powers and geography)
| Aspect | What OFC has | What it does not have |
|---|---|---|
| Powers | Peer-reviews submitted papers and decides which to accept, and shapes the content of the conference and exhibition | Power to set standards, certify products or fund research |
| Geography | Held in the United States. Attendees came from 91 countries (OFC 2026, organisers' figures) | Direct influence over anyone who does not attend |
| Governance | Co-sponsored and managed by Optica (headquartered in Washington, DC, founded in 1916), and co-sponsored by IEEE ComSoc and the IEEE Photonics Society | Any mechanism by which a particular company or country runs it (the organisers are professional societies) |
| Knock-on effects for the industry | Standards bodies (OIF, ITU-T SG15) stage demonstrations and sessions, and companies time their product announcements to OFC | Any mechanism that guarantees announced products will be adopted or put into volume production |
For OFC 2026 attendance, the organisers' post-show release gives about 18,000 people from 91 countries, while the home page of the official website gives 17,800 people from 73 countries. The country counts differ Not yet confirmed. This article uses the post-show release figures. The pre-show release of February 2026 had projected 16,000 people from 90 countries.
5. The companies and organisations involved
How OFC relates to the companies in this series
| Group | Companies (candidates for this series) | As the primary sources put it |
|---|---|---|
| Named as exhibitors | NVIDIA, Intel, Marvell, Cisco, Nokia, Lumentum, Coherent, Ciena, Corning, Ayar Labs, Lightmatter, Celestial AI | Examples of exhibitors in the organisers' release of 12 February 2026 |
| Sponsor | AMD | Listed as "Advanced Micro Devices" in the sponsors section of the official home page |
| General chair of the conference | Sumitomo Electric Industries | One of the general chairs (Tetsuya Hayashi, affiliation given as Sumitomo Electric) is quoted in the organisers' release |
Note: we have not checked the full list of 706 exhibitors. A candidate company missing from this table has not necessarily stayed away Our calculation.
6. Outlook
| What the evidence suggests | Primary information it rests on | Category |
|---|---|---|
| At OFC 2027 (7 to 11 March 2027, Los Angeles), 448G, 1.6T and CPO/NPO will again be the central themes | The technical themes of OFC 2026 (224G to 448G, commercialisation of 1.6T, CPO, NPO and optical I/O), and the official website's statement that more than 750 companies are expected to exhibit in 2027 | Inference |
| OFC's role as a venue for standards bodies' interoperability demonstrations will grow | At OFC 2026, OIF staged its largest demonstration yet, with 40 companies and about 100 modules from 15 companies, and ITU-T SG15 also held a session | Inference |
| More new types of optical fibre, such as hollow-core fibre, will be exhibited | The organisers listed hollow-core fibre among the exhibition themes of OFC 2026. ITU-T SG15 has also started a technical report on hollow-core fibre | Inference |
