COMPANY PROFILE / SPACE INDUSTRY

Varda Space Industries
It makes things in orbit and brings them home in its own capsules, flying both government tests and drug-crystallisation trials

Varda is not a rocket company. It builds and flies small capsules that bring things back from space (we found no rocket of its own in the company's material). A Varda spacecraft circles in low Earth orbit, a few hundred kilometres up, where onboard equipment processes materials. At the end, only the capsule drops into the atmosphere and lands on the ground. According to the company's website, its spacecraft belong to the "W-Series" and are numbered W-1 to W-9. This profile relies only on the company itself, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and NASA, and sets out what Varda flies, how much of it has already happened, and what is still a plan. Note that this article does not discuss the effects of any drug made in microgravity.

Sources: Varda's website and official press releases, FAA licensing documents, NASA's announcement and the SEC filing index, used as primary material. Checked on 17 October 2026. Last updated 17 October 2026.

The one thing to grasp first

Companies in the space industry fall into four groups: those that carry things up by rocket, those that go to the Moon or a space station, those that operate or build in orbit, and those that make parts and systems (Figure 1 in chapter 3). Varda belongs to the third group, and what sets it apart is that it builds the capsule that comes back Sourced. It launches on SpaceX rideshare flights (flights on which one rocket carries many small satellites), and we found no rocket of its own in its releases. Instead it concentrates on building the spacecraft, the heat shield and the operations in house, and on the part that returns to the ground. The same capsule is used for government hypersonic tests (flight at more than five times the speed of sound) and for crystal-growing trials for medicines, which is unusual among space companies.

2. The logo and how the name is written

A note on names: the legal entity is Varda Space Industries, Inc., usually shortened to "Varda". "W-Series" is the name of the spacecraft family, and individual craft are called W-1, W-2 and so on. The SEC database also lists a separate entity called "Varda Space Industries a Series of CGF2021 LLC". It appears to be an investor-side vehicle, and this article is about the company itself (Varda Space Industries, Inc.) Not yet confirmed.

3. Where the company sits in the space industry

Four types of company in the space industry All are "space companies", but the role each plays in space sets its strengths and its challenges Launch Exploration, crewed & lunar Satellites, in-orbit services & manufacturing Parts & systems Rockets to orbit To the Moon or a station Work and make in orbit Support spacecraft SpaceX / Blue Origin Rocket Lab / Firefly Axiom Space / Intuitive Machines ispace / Astrobotic Astroscale / Varda Synspective / Starcloud Northrop Grumman / BAE Systems Microchip / Redwire Launch capacity and reuse Reach to the Moon and ISS New uses and markets Track record, reliability Failures and delays Funding, schedule risk Demos still under way Slow qualification Varda makes things in orbit and brings them back; it launches on rideshare flights One capsule serves government hypersonic tests and drug-crystallisation trials (company's account)
Fig. 1 The four types of space-industry company and where Varda sits. The grouping is ours, and the company names are examples from the companies covered in this series Our calculation. That Varda launches on rideshare flights comes from its press releases (we found no mention of a rocket of its own).

4. Scale of the company

Varda is not listed, and it does not publish financial statements such as revenue or profit. What we could confirm is the funding the company has announced itself, plus scattered statements about sites and staff (checked on 17 October 2026) Sourced.

A caution

The announced cumulative totals do not equal the sums of the individual rounds. From Series B to C, 145 + 187 = 332, against a stated total of 329. From C to D, 329 + 251 = 580, against 598 Our calculation. The published material does not explain the gaps. This article reports the company's figures as stated and does not adjust them. The company's official announcements also give no valuation for Series D. Press reports quote a number, but this article does not use figures that rest on press reports alone.

5. Resources committed to space

Space is Varda's whole business. The table below shows how far official material confirms its people, money, outside investments and contracts with public bodies (checked on 17 October 2026).

Type of resourceWhat we foundType

A note on counting

In its announcement of 30 September 2026 the company says it has "completed six successful reentry missions" Sourced. The W-5 mission page, however, calls W-5 the "fifth mission overall and fourth reentry", and the W-4 page ends with a deorbit manoeuvre for the whole vehicle, satellite bus included. The six may be the five ground landings (W-1, W-2, W-3, W-5, W-6) plus the end of W-4, but we could not find how the company defines its count Not yet confirmed. This article lists each mission's dates and status in the table and quotes the company's own wording for the total.

A materials engineer's view: making the heat shield in house

Varda's capsule enters the atmosphere at more than 18,000 miles per hour (company's stated value; about 29,000 km/h Our calculation) Sourced. What protects its surface is a heat-shield material called C-PICA (Conformal Phenolic Impregnated Carbon Ablator). An "ablator" is a material that chars and wears away bit by bit, carrying heat away with it. NASA's Ames Research Center developed C-PICA, and Varda licensed it and now makes it in house. NASA has stated that W-5 was the first craft to return protected entirely by Varda-made C-PICA (29 January 2026). For how heat shields work, see our explainer on thermal protection systems.

7. What comes next

W-7October 2026
(planned)
A pharmaceutical processing mission, per the company's mission page
W-8 AND W-9In flight
(no reentry announced)
Announced on 1 October 2026. No reentry announcement as of the checking date
FUTURE FLIGHTSMore than a dozen launches and reentries through 2028The company's plan (announcement of 30 September 2026)
FIRST MEDICINEAims for the first medicine made in spaceA company goal. No timing or target announced

The company repeatedly speaks of raising the number of flights, building on the FAA's June 2025 permission for multiple reentries until 2029 Sourced. Its government page also says it expects a monthly reentry cadence by 2026, between government and commercial demand Not yet confirmed. These are company goals and expectations, separate from results. For 2026, the landings we can confirm so far are W-5 (29 January) and W-6 (18 May).

What we could not confirm

None of the following appears in official material Not yet confirmed.

When a medicine made in space might be approved or sold / the reentry dates of W-7, W-8 and W-9 / the value of the AFRL flight-services contract / revenue and profit / the current headcount / the content of the permits needed for landings outside the U.S. (we did not check Australian approvals). Figures such as "Varda's valuation" mostly come from press reports and are not used here.

8. What the company is aiming for in space

This chapter includes points the company has not stated directly. They are offered as inferences that the primary material supports, with the evidence.

What we read from itPrimary evidenceType
Its end goal is for the first product made in space to be a medicineThe 30 September 2026 announcement says the first product will be a pharmaceutical. W-7 is a pharmaceutical processing mission, and the United Therapeutics collaboration has been announcedSourced
Government hypersonic tests carry much of the flight schedule for nowMany payloads on W-2 (in part), W-3, W-5, W-6, W-8 and W-9 are funded by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, the Navy or government programmes. Only W-1, W-2, W-4 and W-7 are listed with a pharmaceutical processing mission typeInference
It is trying to raise flight frequency through in-house integrationThe CTO says owning the spacecraft, capsule and operations lets the company improve faster and fly more often, and W-4 and W-5 moved the satellite bus and heat shield in houseInference
It leaves launch to others and concentrates on the returnEvery launch we could confirm was a SpaceX rideshare flight (W-2, W-4 to W-6, W-8 and W-9). No rocket of its own is mentionedInference
One inference in more detail

The company calls itself a "microgravity-enabled life sciences company" (October 2026 announcement). Yet in the flight record, only W-1, W-2, W-4 and W-7 are listed as pharmaceutical processing missions, while W-3, W-5, W-6, W-8 and W-9 centre on government reentry tests Sourced. The company also explains that for its government test bed, "commercial customers require low-cost reentry, leading to cost benefits for government missions". Together these suggest a division of roles: government tests build up flight numbers and operating experience, and that experience also serves the pharmaceutical flights Not yet confirmed. However, the split of government and pharmaceutical revenue is not disclosed, so outsiders cannot tell which is the larger part of the business.

9. Map of partnerships in the space industry

Space-industry partnerships around Varda Only relationships in company, FAA and NASA material; press-only links excluded (checked 17 October 2026) Varda Orbit and back AFRL (US Air Force Lab) Prometheus flight contract United Therapeutics Joint medicine processing FAA Reentry licence (Part 450) Main investors Lux Capital, Natural Capital NASA C-PICA licence and award SpaceX Rideshare launches Rocket Lab Pioneer satellite bus (W-2) Southern Launch Runs Koonibba range (Australia) Contract / joint work Supply / service Licensing Investment (dashed)

The figure includes only relationships that appear in public material, and leaves out links known only from press reports. Organisations that supplied payloads (Sandia, Canopy, Syensqo and others) are named in the tables in the text.

10. Technology, products and services

OfferingWhat it is (company's account)Type
W-Series (spacecraft)A satellite bus (power, communications, attitude control, propulsion) plus a reentry capsule. Designed, built and operated in house. Used for government tests, pharmaceutical processing and researchSourced
Government hypersonic test bedThe capsule enters the atmosphere at Mach 25 or more and lands by parachute. The company says the payload capacity is "over 100 W of power, tens of kilograms of internal mass and plenty of area for thermal protection material" (company's stated value)Sourced
Pharmaceutical processing (crystallisation)For small molecules and biologics, equipment heats, mixes and cools in microgravity to make crystals, which return to Earth for analysis. W-4 introduced a solution-based methodSourced
Ground-based hypergravity crystallisationCrystallisation is tried at higher-than-Earth gravity to narrow down compounds suited to microgravity (company's account)Sourced
C-PICA heat shieldLicensed from NASA and made in El Segundo. Fitted to W-4 and later craftSourced
Microgravity research serviceTakes outside researchers' payloads, runs automated experiments in orbit and returns them to the groundSourced
A materials engineer's view: what does the absence of gravity do to a crystal?

The company explains that in microgravity convection (liquid moving because of temperature differences) and sedimentation (heavy particles sinking) are suppressed, so crystals tend to be more uniform in size and structure Sourced. In materials terms, on Earth the flow of liquid and the settling of particles disturb how a crystal grows. Remove those, and it becomes easier to study how a crystal grows with gravity's influence set aside. The company says its ground facility, which applies stronger gravity, is there to treat gravity as a continuous variable and so predict what will happen in microgravity. This article does not address how a medicine behaves, or how well it works, once used. For that, check the announcements of the company and its partners directly. For the basics of crystallisation, see our explainers on space manufacturing and microgravity, and on microgravity drug discovery and protein crystallisation.

11. The risks this company carries

RiskWhat it involvesType
Reliance on government test flightsMost of the flight record we can confirm is government-funded payloads. Changes in government budgets or policy could affect flight numbersInference
Medicine demonstration still under wayThe company says the first product made in space will be a medicine, but the timing and the target are unannounced. W-7 is still to comeSourced
Limits of the licenceThe FAA permission allows multiple reentries until 2029 within the authorised mission profile and vehicle design. Flights outside that scope could need a fresh reviewSourced
Reliance on outside launchEvery launch we could confirm (W-2, W-4 to W-6, W-8 and W-9) was a SpaceX rideshare flight, so its schedule follows the rideshare scheduleInference
Differences in how results are countedThe company's statement of reentry numbers does not fully match its mission pages (chapter 5)Sourced
Finances cannot be checked from outsideRevenue, costs and valuation are undisclosed, and the cumulative funding totals do not equal the sum of the roundsNot yet confirmed
Gap between goals and resultsAgainst the company's expectation of monthly reentries by 2026, the 2026 landings we can confirm are W-5 and W-6 (as of 17 October 2026)Not yet confirmed
