BNBST-xLMN Ceramics: High-Entropy Engineering for Energy Storage

OAE Publishing China
Overview
Researchers have developed BNBST-xLMN ceramics using high-entropy grain boundary engineering to achieve a recoverable energy density of 6.50 J/cm³ at 450 kV/cm. This approach overcomes the traditional tradeoff between breakdown strength and polarization difference in moderate electric fields. The result provides a promising candidate for integrated industrial power systems requiring fast charge-discharge performance.
In Depth

Key Findings

The BNBST-0.08LMN ceramic achieves a recoverable energy density (Wrec) of 6.50 J/cm³ and a storage efficiency (η) of 86.42% at a moderate electric field of 450 kV/cm. The material demonstrates stable energy storage performance (ESP) and fast charge-discharge capabilities, with a t0.9 of approximately 45 ns.

Technical Details

The study utilizes high-entropy (HE) grain boundary engineering to fabricate (1- x)(Bi0.5Na0.5)0.7(Ba0.3Sr0.7)0.3TiO3 – x La(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3 (BNBST-xLMN) ceramics. Key technical mechanisms include:

  • Phase Competition: The incorporation of LMN increases configurational entropy, inducing phase competition. Phase-field simulations identified the x = 0.08 model as optimal for achieving low remnant polarization (Pr) and high maximum polarization (Pmax).
  • Microstructural Control: Atomic-scale observations show the coexistence of short-range polar and long-range nonpolar regions, alongside randomly tilted oxygen octahedra, which reduces polarization anisotropy.
  • Grain Boundary Engineering: Mg oxide compounds located within grain boundaries act as pinning centers. These centers refine grain size, improve insulation, and retard the propagation of electrical trees.

Background & Context

Dielectric capacitors are critical for pulsed-power applications due to their high power densities and fast discharge rates. While Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 (BNT)-based ceramics offer high Pmax due to Bi3+-O2- hybridization, they typically suffer from low breakdown strength (Eb) and large hysteresis losses. Previous high-entropy designs have achieved ultrahigh ESP, but almost exclusively at extreme electric fields above 500 kV/cm, which poses reliability and safety risks for industrial equipment.

Significance & Outlook

By addressing the intrinsic tradeoff between Eb and ΔP (Pmax – Pr), this research provides a general route to enhancing ESP in BNT-based ceramics within the practically relevant moderate electric-field range of 200-500 kV/cm. This makes the material a viable candidate for industrial power systems where long-term reliability and safety are paramount.
