Key Findings
Anthropic has transferred the Agent Skills open standard, including its name, logo, GitHub organization, and the agentskills.io domain, to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF). The AAIF, hosted under the Linux Foundation, was co-founded last year by Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI. This move follows Anthropic’s previous donation of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to the same foundation.
Technical Details
Agent Skills provide AI agents with specialized knowledge and workflows through a simplified structure. A “skill” consists of a folder containing a SKILL.md file, which instructs the agent on a specific domain or task, accompanied by necessary reference materials or scripts. The standard is designed for interoperability, allowing any agent to utilize these skills regardless of the vendor.
Background and Context
The development of Agent Skills originated during the creation of Claude Code. While Claude Code performed well in general knowledge tasks, Anthropic identified a gap in the procedural knowledge required for real business operations. Following the October 2025 launch of Claude Code, developers began publishing thousands of skills on GitHub and creating loaders for OpenCode, Cursor, and Codex. Anthropic subsequently published Agent Skills as an open standard in December 2025. To date, over 70 platforms have integrated the standard, including VS Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and ChatGPT.
Significance and Outlook
The transition to the AAIF is intended to keep the standard community-driven and vendor-neutral. Maintenance will be handled by individuals from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and other companies, with Mahesh Murag and David Soria Parra serving as Lead Maintainers. The proposed roadmap focuses on security guidance for skill installation, a formal proposal process, and versioned releases. Community feedback is being solicited via Discord and GitHub to guide future specification changes.
