Key Findings
Kyushu University Hospital in Fukuoka City has successfully performed a surgical procedure using “ReHeart,” a regenerative medicine product derived from iPS cells. This marks the second such surgery conducted globally. The patient, a male in his 50s suffering from severe heart failure, had previously shown insufficient response to medication and pacemaker treatments, leaving him barely able to walk.
Technical Details
ReHeart consists of heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) derived from iPS cells, processed into thin sheets. The surgical procedure involved the following specifications:
- Application: Three thin sheets, each approximately 3 centimeters in diameter, were applied to the surface of the heart.
- Duration: The operation was completed in approximately one hour.
- Mechanism: The sheets are designed to secrete substances that promote the regeneration of blood vessels, which is expected to improve overall cardiac function.
Following the procedure, the patient’s condition was reported as stable.
Background and Context
ReHeart is indicated for the treatment of severe heart failure where cardiac function has declined due to conditions such as myocardial infarction. The product received insurance coverage in September. The first global surgery using this practical iPS cell-derived product was performed in Osaka City at the end of September.
Significance and Outlook
Professor Akira Shiose, the Vice Director of the hospital who performed the surgery, noted that this treatment provides a low-invasive alternative for patients who do not recover cardiac function through catheter treatments or bypass surgery. According to Professor Shiose, ReHeart serves as a critical clinical option for patients before they must resort to heart transplants or ventricular assist devices, offering a new possibility for those previously lacking viable treatment options.
