Key Findings
Professor Xu Zongxiang’s team at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has reported a significant advancement in perovskite solar cell manufacturing. They achieved a world-leading certified power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 27.23% for perovskite solar cells using a rapid 5-minute dip-coating process combined with a MOLEC-SAM-006 self-assembled monolayer (SAM). This technology simultaneously demonstrates high efficiency and accelerated manufacturing, substantially advancing the commercial prospects of perovskite solar cells.
Technical / Clinical Details
The core innovation of this research lies in the simplified “5-minute dip-coating” process and the effective passivation of interfacial defects using the MOLEC-SAM-006 self-assembled monolayer (SAM). This SAM technology optimizes the interface between the perovskite layer and the charge transport layer, enhancing charge extraction efficiency and suppressing recombination losses. As a result, a certified PCE of 27.23% was achieved on a small-area cell (0.071cm²). Furthermore, performance was verified on devices closer to practical size: a 1cm² device recorded a PCE of 25.75%, and a 12cm² mini-module achieved 23.25% PCE.
Notably, this technique also exhibited excellent device stability. The dip-coating process is highly scalable for mass production and improves material utilization efficiency, contributing to reduced manufacturing costs. Its excellent recyclability further positions it as an environmentally friendly production approach.
Background & Context
Perovskite solar cells are considered promising candidates for the future of photovoltaics due to their high efficiency and potential for low-cost manufacturing. However, challenges in reproducibility of efficiency at scale, device stability, and simplification of manufacturing processes have persisted. Solution-based processes like dip-coating are highly attractive for industrial applications due to their cost-effectiveness and ease of large-area fabrication. Professor Xu Zongxiang’s team’s achievement provides a breakthrough by not only reaching world-class efficiencies with a solution process but also ensuring stability through SAM technology, fulfilling a critical industry demand.
Strategic Significance & Outlook
The combination of this 5-minute dip-coating and SAM technology represents a major step towards accelerating the commercialization of perovskite solar cells in areas such as flexible photovoltaics and building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). The simplification and speed-up of the manufacturing process will lead to dramatic reductions in production costs, significantly enhancing the market competitiveness of perovskite solar cells. In the future, this technology could be integrated into existing silicon solar cell manufacturing lines to form tandem structures, potentially realizing even higher efficiencies and broader applications. This is expected to make a crucial contribution to the proliferation of sustainable energy solutions.
