Chinese automotive giant Geely Holding has unveiled plans to commence pilot operations of solid-state batteries in its subsidiary electric vehicle (EV) brands starting in 2027. The company states that the solid-state batteries under development are capable of achieving an energy density of up to 500 Wh/kg. This breakthrough is expected to enable EVs to achieve driving ranges exceeding 1,000 kilometers on a single charge and contribute to significantly longer battery lifespans. The 500 Wh/kg energy density targeted by Geely represents approximately double that of current high-performance liquid-electrolyte lithium-ion batteries, promising a dramatic increase in EV driving range. Furthermore, they are expected to enable operation at higher voltages, leading to improved fast-charging capabilities. For the mass production of these solid-state batteries, Geely recognizes the critical importance of ‘adhesive’ technology and is jointly developing solid-state cell adhesives with Dow Chemical Company. Superior adhesive technology is essential to reduce interfacial resistance between electrodes and solid electrolytes and ensure long-term stability.
