Technical Implementation
The Petrobrazi refinery is integrating large-scale electrolyzer facilities to produce green hydrogen via water electrolysis, powered by certified renewable energy sources. The initial phase will see the installation of several megawatts (MW) of electrolyzer capacity, projected to yield an annual output of several thousand tons of hydrogen (exact figures currently undisclosed). This domestically produced green hydrogen will primarily be captured for internal refinery processes, including vital desulfurization and other hydrogen-intensive operations. This internal use is anticipated to substantially reduce the CO2 emissions typically associated with conventional grey hydrogen production, which relies on natural gas reforming. Beyond internal consumption, future development plans encompass the exploration of infrastructure for supplying green hydrogen to external regional industrial clients and the burgeoning mobility sector, thereby fostering a robust hydrogen supply chain across Romania. The project is also expected to benefit from financial support via Romania’s EU Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), underscoring its strategic importance to national and European climate objectives.
