COMPANY PROFILE / QUANTUM COMPUTING
PsiQuantum
- A private U.S. company that makes qubits from particles of light and aims at a "million-qubit-scale" machine using chips built in a semiconductor factory
PsiQuantum is a U.S. company that uses particles of light (photons) as the parts (qubits) of a quantum computer. It makes the circuits as silicon-photonics chips that can be mass-produced at a GlobalFoundries semiconductor factory (in New York State) and aims to link them in great numbers into a "utility-scale" machine of about a million qubits. In February 2025 it presented its chipset, "Omega", in a paper in Nature, and in September 2025 it announced a US$1 billion funding round (a valuation of US$7 billion, as stated by the company). It has started building at sites in Chicago in the U.S. and Moreton Bay in Australia. However, no utility-scale machine exists yet. The company is private, and its revenue, profit and headcount are not disclosed. This profile uses figures to show how the photonic approach differs from atoms and superconducting circuits, and sorts out what has been achieved and what is only planned, using only company announcements, a paper and DARPA's official page. Phrases such as "world's first" are treated as the company's own claims. Information checked on 16 October 2026.

1. PsiQuantum at a glance, and where it sits in quantum computing
US$7 billion valuation (company)Announced 10 September 2025. Led by BlackRock affiliates, Temasek and Baillie Gifford
Stage CListed on DARPA's official page (as of 8 October 2026)
PsiQuantum's thinking is this: a useful quantum computer needs a way to fix mistakes (error correction), which needs about a million qubits, so the company chose an approach that can be built in a mass-production semiconductor factory from the start Sourced. Unlike arrays of atoms or superconducting circuits, photons carry no electric charge and can be connected directly with optical fiber, the company says. What the company has published as achievements, though, are the performance of individual chip components (the accuracy of preparing and measuring a photon's state and so on) and experiments on chip-to-chip links. A large machine that binds many chips together and computes has not been completed. As of October 2026, construction has only just begun Sourced.
2. Logo and naming

A note on names: the company is PsiQuantum (Psi is the Greek letter psi, the symbol for the wave function in quantum mechanics). Omega is the name of the chipset, Construct is the name of its algorithm-development software for fault-tolerant quantum computers, and PsiFactory is the name of the prototyping and testing facility in Milpitas; none is a company name. The logo is the white version from the company's website, made for dark backgrounds.
Official site: https://www.psiquantum.com/3. Where the company sits in the quantum-computing landscape
First, qubits and approaches. A qubit is the smallest part of a quantum computer. An ordinary bit is 0 or 1, but a qubit can be in a "superposition" of 0 and 1. PsiQuantum makes its qubits from particles of light (photons).
A photonic quantum computer differs greatly from atom-based or superconducting machines in how its parts are made. The illustration below simplifies the flow as PsiQuantum describes it.
4. Company size (published information only, as a private company)
PsiQuantum is private and does not publish financial statements. The table lists what could be confirmed from company announcements Sourced.

For a private company, funding amounts and valuations are the figures in its own announcements. Because revenue, headcount and the substance of its finances are unknown, size and financial stability cannot be judged from outside. This profile does not use valuations or investment amounts that appear only in press reports. And the "world's first utility-scale quantum computer" is a plan under construction, not a machine that has operated.
5. Resources committed to quantum computing

| Outside investments, acquisitions, joint ventures | No investment in, acquisition of, or joint venture with another company was found in the announcements. At Chicago, Related Midwest and CRG develop the site and funds of Blue Owl Capital provide the financing (this is a development arrangement, not the company's own finances) | Not confirmed |

Here are the main chips, machines and sites, as far as company announcements and the paper allow (checked 16 October 2026). The numbers are the company's stated values or values reported in the paper. Because the methods and measurement conditions differ, they are not lined up against other companies to rank them.
| Chip / machine / site | Scale and content (approach: photons, silicon photonics) | Stage | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Omega (chipset) | Photon sources, operations and detection integrated in one chipset, made at GlobalFoundries' Fab 8. The cooling plant is due for delivery in the second half of 2027 | Construction started / plan Not yet confirmed | June 2026 | References 10, 15 https://www.psiquantum.com/news-import/psiquantum-breaks-ground-in-australia-on-site-of-worlds-first-utility-scale-quantum-computer https://www.psiquantum.com/news-import/psiquantum-linde |
| Utility-scale machine (about a million qubits) | A design aiming at about 1,000,000 physical qubits. The April 2024 announcement said the company aimed to have the Brisbane site operating by the end of 2027, but the 2026 announcements give no date | Plan Not yet confirmed | - | References 12, 10 https://www.psiquantum.com/news-import/psiquantum-to-build-worlds-first-utility-scale-fault-tolerant-quantum-computer-in-australia https://www.psiquantum.com/news-import/psiquantum-breaks-ground-in-australia-on-site-of-worlds-first-utility-scale-quantum-computer |
The Omega figures are measurements of individual devices and small circuits, not the error rate or computing performance of a computer that binds many chips together (our interpretation). The stage "plan" does not mean the outcome is certain.
The "99.98%" in the Omega announcement is the accuracy of preparing and measuring the state of one photon. It is not the accuracy of a "gate" (an operation that links qubits). In the photonic approach, the links between qubits are made by measuring photons (fusion measurements). For that reason it cannot be compared directly with other approaches' "two-qubit gate accuracy" Not yet confirmed. This profile reports these figures as values announced by the company, without setting them beside other companies' figures.
6. What the company has done so far
| When | What happened | Meaning |

7. Plans
second half of 2027Then commissioning, and acceptance of cryogenic cabinets filled with chips (June 2026 announcement)
then later construction phasesDARPA will evaluate the test system. No dates for later phases
(conditional)The company states it is "strictly conditional and not guaranteed" (October 2026)
The company describes these as "plans" and "targets", and they are not accomplished facts Not yet confirmed. In its Omega announcement the company itself said it must keep improving the performance, integration and yield of the devices (while saying there is "no next step in terms of manufacturing maturity").
None of the following could be confirmed from company announcements, the paper or official pages Not yet confirmed: when the million-qubit-scale machine will operate; a computation demonstrated on a machine that binds many chips together (an experiment with error-corrected logical qubits); headcount, revenue and profit; the current status of the A$940 million Australian package (the amount as of the 2024 announcement); when the Chicago machine will operate; and the final terms of the OSC loan. Phrases such as "world's first utility-scale" and "best performance" are the company's claims, and this profile has not confirmed any third-party comparison.
8. What the company is aiming for in quantum computing
This chapter includes points the company does not state directly. They are given as inferences, within what the primary sources support, together with the evidence.
| What can be read from the sources | Primary evidence | Status |
|---|---|---|
| It follows a route of building a million-qubit-scale machine from the start, rather than selling small machines step by step | The company says "only building the real thing, million-qubit-scale, fault-tolerant machines, will unlock the promise", and the materials checked here describe no product sold as a machine (small systems or cloud). Site construction comes first | Inference |
| It leaves manufacturing to a semiconductor foundry and focuses on design, materials (BTO), cooling and software | The chip is designed by the company and made by GlobalFoundries. It makes BTO wafers itself and develops the Construct software in-house | Sourced |
| A large share of construction cost is borne by governments, local authorities and development partners | The A$940 million Australian package, Illinois's US$500 million park budget and more than US$500 million of incentives over 30 years, Blue Owl Capital funding at Chicago, and the Commerce and OSC funds | Inference |
| It also wants to use silicon photonics for optical networking for AI | The company writes that the BTO optical switch could also serve next-generation AI supercomputers. The July 2026 announcement describes an executive appointed to take the platform to AI networking | Sourced (the intent is an inference) |
| The company's center of gravity is moving from research to construction and execution | The February 2026 announcement says it is moving to "large-scale deployment and execution", with a semiconductor-industry veteran as interim CEO and later CEO | Sourced |
The April 2024 announcement described an "aggressive plan to have the site operational by the end of 2027" at a site near Brisbane Airport. The announcements of May and June 2026 settled the site at Moreton Bay Central and said ground was broken in June, but they give no year of operation. Instead they say the cryoplant is due in the second half of 2027, after which commissioning and acceptance of cabinets begin Sourced. From this we read that "PsiQuantum has changed its announcements to show the construction and procurement schedule first, rather than promise a year of operation. If the cryoplant arrives in the second half of 2027, operation by the end of 2027 may be hard in terms of the schedule". The announcements do not give the reason, and this is our interpretation Not yet confirmed.
9. Partnership map for quantum computing
10. Technology, products and services
| Layer | Main product | What company announcements and the paper say |
|---|---|---|
| Chip | Omega (quantum photonic chipset) | Integrates parts that make, operate on and detect photons. On a silicon-photonics base, the company introduced a superconducting material for detectors and BTO for optical switches into the factory process. Made at GlobalFoundries' Fab 8 |
| Cooling and system | Cryogenic cabinets and a cooling plant | A design in which one cuboid cabinet cools hundreds of chips. The large plant is built by Linde Engineering |
| Links | Chip-to-chip and cabinet-to-cabinet links over optical fiber | Says it demonstrated high-fidelity quantum links over distances of up to 250 m (company announcement) |
| Software | Construct (Circuit Designer, Workbench, Resource Analyzer) and the PsiQuantum Development Kit | An environment for designing, analyzing and optimizing fault-tolerant quantum algorithms. Opened to all developers in May 2026 and integrated with NVIDIA's CUDA-Q. It can also estimate the resources a computation needs |
| Facilities | PsiFactory (Milpitas), a test and validation lab (Brisbane), Moreton Bay, Chicago | Sites for prototyping and testing, and sites (under construction) to hold utility-scale machines |
BTO, the optical-switch material: in the photonic approach, an "optical switch" that quickly redirects the paths of photons is, the company says, "the missing component" for scaling. The material is barium titanate (BTO), which has a very strong electro-optic effect (light's path changes a great deal when a voltage is applied). PsiQuantum makes 300 mm wafers of BTO at its own facilities in California and combines them with wafers made at GlobalFoundries Sourced. Our explainer "thin-film lithium niobate" covers a different electro-optic material.
Superconducting photon detectors: the Omega announcement says the chip includes "a superconducting material for highly efficient single-photon detection". Detectors need cooling, so the cooling design is a large challenge for the approach Sourced. The 2026 Commerce announcement lists work on improving these into "high-temperature single-photon detectors".
What could not be confirmed: the specific material of the chip's light paths (waveguides), such as silicon or silicon nitride, could not be determined from the announcements checked here Not yet confirmed. Our explainers "silicon photonics", "silicon nitride waveguides", "photodetectors" and "optical fiber" cover the background parts.
11. Risks the company faces
| Risk | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| No large machine yet | No computation on a machine that binds many chips together was found in the materials checked. The published performance figures are measurements of individual devices and small circuits | Sourced |
| No operating date given | The company set a goal of "the end of 2027" in 2024, but the 2026 announcements give no date. The site also changed, from near Brisbane Airport to Moreton Bay Central | Sourced |
| Technical improvement still needed | The company itself says it must keep improving device performance, integration and yield | Sourced |
| Dependence on public funding and local support | The OSC loan is conditional and not guaranteed, and the Australian and Illinois packages are amounts as of the 2024 announcements. They could be affected by changes in government policy | Not yet confirmed |
| Finances are not visible from outside | Revenue, headcount and the substance of its finances are not disclosed. The valuation is only the company's statement | Sourced |
| Change in management | In February 2026 the founder, O'Brien, moved from CEO to executive chair, and in July an outside executive, Peng, became CEO | Sourced |
| The outcome of public evaluation is not settled | DARPA says "multiple, single, or even no participants" may show a path, and does not guarantee a result. The company's July 2026 announcement said it was "one of two companies in Stage C", whereas DARPA's official page (as of 8 October) lists six Stage C performers | Sourced |
| Competition | Companies using superconducting, ion, neutral-atom, silicon-spin and other photonic approaches are also aiming for fault-tolerant machines. The company's "world first" and "best performance" are its own claims, and no ranking against others is made here | Sourced |

The figures in this profile are based on PsiQuantum's official announcements, the Nature paper and DARPA's official page. No market-research estimates or press-only figures are used.
