COMPANY PROFILE / MATERIALS INFORMATICS
ENEOS
A major energy and materials company that co-developed the AI atomistic simulator Matlantis, uses it in house and offers it to others
ENEOS Holdings is a major Japanese energy and materials group whose businesses include petroleum products, electricity and functional materials. From the standpoint of materials informatics (MI, the use of data and computation to narrow down candidate materials and conditions), its distinguishing feature is that since 2019 it has co-developed with Preferred Networks (PFN) a general-purpose, machine-learning-based atomistic simulator, Matlantis, uses it to develop its own catalysts, lubricants and polymers, and makes the same software available to outside users through Matlantis Corporation (formerly PFCC). This profile keeps the whole-company business brief and concentrates on the use of MI in materials and chemistry.

code 5020From where its IR documents are posted and their code
Secondary: stake in an MI software companyThe supplier of the MI software is a separate company, Matlantis
ENEOS's MI has two layers: using the tool itself, and investing in the company that built it so that it reaches more users. The CTO message in Integrated Report 2026 says Matlantis is used "in the development of materials and catalysts" and that, "since it should not be kept in house", it was released as a SaaS business and is used by companies in industries such as chemicals, automobiles and semiconductors Sourced. It is not ENEOS but a separate legal entity, Matlantis Corporation, that runs the SaaS. ENEOS is one of its shareholders, and its current stake is not disclosed. Figures such as "more than 150 companies and research institutions" are Matlantis's own wording, not ENEOS's.
2. The logo and how the name is written

A note on names: this article covers the holding company (ENEOS Holdings, Inc.). ENEOS Corporation, the operating company that sells petroleum products, and ENEOS Materials Corporation are separate legal entities. Matlantis Corporation, which provides the Matlantis SaaS, is another separate entity. It was renamed in July 2025 from Preferred Computational Chemistry (PFCC) (at founding, Preferred Networks held a majority of 51%). The logo is the English-language logo shown in the header of the company's official website.
Official site: https://www.hd.eneos.co.jp/3. Where the company sits in the materials informatics field
MI is a flow in which past data and computation narrow down "promising candidate materials and conditions", and experiments then confirm them (see our explainer on materials informatics for an overview). Companies involved in MI fall into four types, depending on which part of that flow they own.
ENEOS is mainly an industrial user that applies MI to the development of its own catalysts, lubricants and polymers. Because it co-created Matlantis, it is also involved on the MI software and materials-AI side. In terms of the MI flow, the simulator was built by combining PFN's AI and computing infrastructure with ENEOS's chemical knowledge and know-how (prediction and design), and ENEOS uses it together with experiments in its own laboratories. In the joint release of 2021, the president of PFCC described Matlantis as developed by "bringing together PFN's AI technology such as deep learning and its computing infrastructure with the best of ENEOS's knowledge and know-how in the field of chemistry".
4. Scale of the company (the whole company in brief)
ENEOS Holdings is a large company, so only the scale of the whole company is shown, briefly Sourced. No figure for MI alone is disclosed.
| Measure (fiscal 2025 = April 2025 to March 2026) | Figure | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ¥11,765.5 billion | Down from the previous year mainly because JX Advanced Metals became an equity-method affiliate (the metals business is classified as discontinued) |
| Consolidated headcount | 34,099 | n/a |
| R&D expense | ¥15.6 billion | Mainly ¥10.0 billion in petroleum products and others and ¥3.3 billion in functional materials |
| R&D expense as a share of revenue | About 0.13% | Our calculation (¥15.6 billion divided by ¥11,765.5 billion) |
| Registered patents | 5,290 | n/a |
| Certified digital talents | 2,660 | Under the company's internal certification scheme (whole company) |
The figures above are for the whole company, and most revenue comes from petroleum products and energy. How much is spent on MI, and how many people work on it full time, is not disclosed Not yet confirmed. That R&D expense is only about 0.13% of revenue (our calculation) partly reflects how small a share of revenue comes from materials and chemicals, and does not by itself mean that MI spending is small. When reading about this field, keep in mind that the scale of the company and the scale of its commitment to MI are two different things.
5. Resources committed to materials informatics
The table shows, for people, money, outside investment and links with universities or public bodies, what could and could not be confirmed from primary sources. "Not stated" is also a finding.
| Type of resource | What is there | Status |
|---|---|---|
| People (whole company) | 34,099 consolidated employees and 2,660 certified digital talents. An AI Innovation Department, independent of the laboratories, promotes AI use including in-house efficiency | Sourced |
| People (MI) | The head of the Digital Research Institute at the Central Technical Research Laboratory (Mr. Ibuka) has spoken from the viewpoints of both Matlantis co-developer and user (talk abstract). MI-dedicated headcount is not disclosed | Sourced / Not disclosed |
| Money | R&D expense of ¥15.6 billion (whole company). ENEOS's investment in Matlantis and its MI spending are not disclosed. At founding, PFCC's capital was ¥310 million (2021) | Not disclosed |
| Compute | Matlantis was trained on a large amount of atomic-structure data produced by physics simulation on PFN's supercomputer (joint release, 2021). The scale of ENEOS's own compute is not disclosed | Sourced / Not disclosed |
| Investment and joint ventures | Matlantis Corporation (formerly PFCC): at founding in June 2021, Preferred Networks held 51% and ENEOS 49%. In June 2024 Mitsubishi Corporation became a shareholder, and the current shareholders are Preferred Networks, ENEOS Holdings and Mitsubishi Corporation. The current split is not disclosed | Sourced |
| Co-development | Began a strategic collaboration with Preferred Networks in MI in June 2019 and co-developed a general-purpose atomistic simulator | Sourced |
| Ties with universities, institutes and public funding | The talk abstract says Matlantis is also used in outside collaborations with universities and other companies, but names no partner. The Integrated Report cites "five projects using the GI Fund" but does not tie them to MI | Could not be confirmed (partners undisclosed) |
Status of the main models and products
Matlantis is provided by Matlantis Corporation. The table shows what could be confirmed from its official pages and the joint release by ENEOS and PFN.
| Name | Kind | Main specifics (as disclosed) | Form of release and license | Stage and date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matlantis | General-purpose atomistic simulator (cloud SaaS) | Offered as a package of a trained deep-learning model, a property-calculation library and a computing environment. At launch in 2021 it supported 55 elements and was said to run in seconds calculations that take hours to months with DFT | Commercial, by contract. License terms could not be confirmed | Offered from 6 July 2021 | Joint release |
| PFP (PreFerred Potential) | General-purpose machine-learning potential (Matlantis's core model) | The 2022 paper reports it handles any combination of 45 elements. Matlantis states PFP v7 (September 2024) covers all 96 naturally occurring elements and PFP v8 (July 2025) offers up to twice the accuracy using r2SCAN training data | The model sits inside a commercial service. The paper is public | Offered (updated continuously) | Nature Communications, Matlantis company profile |
| LightPFP | Feature for large-scale calculations | Raises the maximum number of atoms in a simulation by more than 10 times (Matlantis's wording) | A Matlantis feature | Released in January 2025 | Matlantis company profile |
The core of Matlantis, PFP, is a machine-learning potential trained on a large body of DFT results. A machine-learning potential is a fast approximator that gives energy and forces from the arrangement of atoms, and using it in place of DFT can make calculations far faster (see our explainer on machine-learning interatomic potentials). What you give up is that accuracy can fall outside the range of the training data Not yet confirmed. The 2022 paper reports quantitatively good results in four examples: lithium diffusion, adsorption in metal-organic frameworks, an order-disorder transition in an alloy, and a search for a catalyst (within the examples the paper chose, and the comparison differs from case to case). The "tens of thousands of times" speed, on the other hand, is a figure from the company's announcement, and the release does not say what calculation conditions it was compared against. If you apply it to your own material system, a practical approach is to first check accuracy on a small scale against known DFT or measured data.
6. What it has done so far

7. What comes next
No MI-specific numerical target or dated plan from ENEOS appears in the material checked Not yet confirmed. The following are company policies.
Use of AI
Low- and zero-carbon energyStated in Integrated Report 2026
Names of products the company says were developed with MI / shorter development time actually achieved with MI / MI-dedicated headcount and spending / ENEOS's current stake in Matlantis Corporation / numbers from lab tests of Matlantis's predictions (including the lubricant case) / names of outside collaborators. Figures taken from news reports are not used.
8. What the company is aiming for in materials informatics
This chapter includes points the company does not state directly. They are inferences from what the primary sources say, set out with their grounds.
| What can be read | Primary source behind it | Status |
|---|---|---|
| It has made MI one pillar of company-wide technology strategy | Integrated Report 2026 says that in the 2025 technology inventory it set five areas of strength, including MI | Sourced |
| Its policy is to open its own tool to outsiders and widen the user base | The CTO message says it released Matlantis as a SaaS business because it should not be kept in house | Sourced (company's account) |
| ENEOS will keep standing on both sides, as developer and as user | The talk abstract says it will speak from both viewpoints, and sets continued development of the simulator beside its practical use in materials development | Sourced |
| Its involvement in Matlantis Corporation may be lighter than at founding | Mitsubishi Corporation became a shareholder in June 2024, and the current split is undisclosed. ENEOS held 49% at founding | Inference |
When PFCC was founded in June 2021 it had two owners, PFN at 51% and ENEOS at 49%. In June 2024 Mitsubishi Corporation joined as a shareholder, so it is certain that the number of shareholders grew from two to three Sourced. The material checked does not say, however, whether this was by new shares or by transfer of holdings, so ENEOS's current stake is unknown. It may have fallen, or it may be unchanged Not yet confirmed. How much influence ENEOS has over the Matlantis business cannot be judged in this article.
9. Map of partnerships in materials informatics
10. How MI is used, and the technologies involved
The fields in which ENEOS says it uses Matlantis are catalysts, lubricants and polymers (talk abstract). The Integrated Report likewise says "development of materials and catalysts". Of these, specifics can be confirmed in public only for the lubricant case.
| Field | How MI is used (company's account) | Published example |
|---|---|---|
| Catalysts | Uses Matlantis in catalyst development (Integrated Report, talk abstract). In refining, it sometimes uses its own catalysts for advanced operation that commercial catalysts cannot handle (a separate matter from MI) | Could not be confirmed |
| Lubricants | Examines the interaction of base oil and additive by simulation and draws a design guideline. At CES 2023 it showed Matlantis alongside EV lubricant products | The illustration below (an excerpt of the July 2023 talk) |
| Polymers | Applies Matlantis to polymer development (talk abstract) | Could not be confirmed |
| Outside collaboration | Uses Matlantis in collaborations with universities and other companies (talk abstract) | Partners undisclosed |
The point of this case is that the calculation is turned into an explanation of a lab fact and into a design guideline Sourced. In metalworking there was a lab fact: how easily a workpiece can be worked differs with the type of base oil. ENEOS followed why in Matlantis and drew the guideline that "a base oil that forms a sparse oil film, one that does not hinder additive adsorption, should be used". It then showed a plan to narrow down candidates that meet the guideline, using the speed of the calculation to generate oil-film density data and considering a machine-learning screen. This order (explain the phenomenon, set a guideline, narrow candidates, then test) is a useful reference when you use MI in your own work. What the material reports, though, is only that lab testing had begun as of July 2023, and no lab results or figures for how much friction fell can be found Not yet confirmed. Note also that this material is ENEOS's talk as quoted in Matlantis's own presentation.
11. The risks this company carries
| Risk | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Results are hard to check from outside | No product developed with MI, no shortening of development time and no contribution to sales is disclosed. Even for the lubricant case, lab-result figures cannot be confirmed from public material | Not yet confirmed |
| Telling apart where figures come from | The "tens of thousands of times" speed and the adoption record of "more than 150 companies and research institutions" come from announcements by Matlantis and PFCC, and are not figures ENEOS has verified | Sourced |
| Possible conflict of interest | The PFP paper states, as a disclosure of competing interests, that some authors are employees of PFN and ENEOS and that PFCC provides Matlantis as a SaaS. Research and business are closely tied | Sourced |
| Range where the model applies | A machine-learning potential can lose accuracy outside the range of its training data. Matlantis's accuracy has to be checked for the material system and conditions you use | Inference |
| Opaque stake and influence | ENEOS's current stake in Matlantis Corporation is undisclosed, so ENEOS's influence, and how far the business's success feeds into ENEOS's results, cannot be measured from outside | Inference |
| Swings in the business environment | The CTO message notes that the tide toward decarbonization swung widely in the past five years and that development spending will be selective. How allocation to MI will change is not stated | Sourced (effect on MI: Inference) |
