COMPANY PROFILE / DRONES AND ROBOTICS

Universal Robots
– The company that popularized "collaborative robots" is widening toward a development base for physical AI

Factory robots may call to mind big arms working behind safety fences. Universal Robots ("UR" below) is a Danish company that builds the arms of "collaborative robots" (cobots), designed to work beside people without a fence. It is a subsidiary of Teradyne, a U.S. maker of semiconductor test equipment, and in September 2026 it unveiled a new platform generation, "Gen 7", with AI use at the front. This article sorts out what robots it makes, how many it sells, and which AI companies it works with, using only Teradyne’s filings with the U.S. SEC and UR’s official announcements as evidence.

Basis: Teradyne’s Form 10-K and 10-Qs, and UR’s official site and news, as primary sources / checked 25 October 2026 / UR’s own revenue is not disclosed (only Teradyne’s Robotics segment)

FIRST HALF 2026 REVENUEUS$191.2 millionUp 32.9% on the same period a year earlier
The one point to grasp first

UR’s distinctive move is that a company that sells robot arms has begun to aim at being "the base for developing and deploying AI robots" Sourced. On its official pages UR describes a design in which AI sits above the control layer, while real-time control and certified safety stay enforced by the arm. The idea is that "AI may reason in probabilities, but robot execution must be deterministic". In March 2026, together with Scale AI, it announced the "AI Trainer", a data-collection system for learning by imitating human motion (imitation learning). On the other hand, UR’s own revenue and profit are not disclosed. Only the figures for Teradyne’s Robotics segment (UR plus the MiR autonomous mobile robots combined) can be confirmed in SEC filings.

2. Logo and naming

Naming note: the company name is Universal Robots ("UR" for short) and the legal entity is Universal Robots A/S (a Danish company). The logo is the official logo (SVG) shown in the header of the company’s official website. The original file lacked a display size, so only width and height values were added (the shapes are unchanged). UR belongs to the Teradyne Robotics group, which also includes the autonomous mobile robot maker Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR). The "Robotics" business that Teradyne reports is UR and MiR combined. PolyScope (the robot software), e-Series, UR Series and g-Series (arm families) are product names, not company names.

3. Where the company sits in the field

The four types of company in drones and robotics Even among "robot companies", strengths and challenges differ with what is built and sold Humanoids & physical AI Industrial & specialist robots Drones & eVTOL Components & enabling software Humanoids, learning robots Work in factories, clinics Aircraft and operations Parts and AI behind robots Figure AI / Boston Dynamics Unitree / UBTech FANUC / Yaskawa Universal Robots / Intuitive DJI / Skydio Zipline / Joby Harmonic Drive NVIDIA Learning and generality Track record, reliability Airspace uses, compliance Supply-chain presence Mass production unproven Adapting to change; price Rules and safety approval Demand follows shipments Universal Robots sits next to the far left: it builds cobot arms that work beside people A Teradyne subsidiary that also invests in a development base for physical AI (AI Accelerator, AI Trainer)
Fig. 1 The four types of company in drones and robotics, and where Universal Robots sits. The classification is ours; company names are examples from firms covered in this series Our calculation. Its main type is the second box (industrial and specialist robots) and its secondary type is the far left (physical AI). Revenue for UR alone is not disclosed; only Teradyne’s Robotics segment (UR plus MiR) can be confirmed.

UR’s main type is "Industrial & specialist robots": it builds arms that work beside people in factories. A collaborative robot (cobot) is one given functions that limit force and speed so that, after a risk assessment, it can work in the same space as people without a safety fence. Teradyne’s 10-K says UR introduced "the world’s first commercially viable cobot" in 2008 (company claim). In 2026 UR has also strengthened its position as a base for developing AI robots, so it has some traits of the far-left "Humanoids & physical AI" type Our calculation.

4. Scale (as Teradyne’s Robotics segment)

UR’s parent Teradyne is mainly a semiconductor-test company. Here we show only the figures for its Robotics segment Sourced. Revenue for UR alone is not disclosed. The numbers below are UR plus MiR.

2025 declineRobotics revenue fell US$56.5 million (15.5%); the company attributes it mainly to lower sales of collaborative arms and autonomous mobile robotsSourced
2026 recoveryUS$91.3 million in the first quarter (up 32.3% on a year earlier) and US$99.9 million in the second (up 33.4%). The company cites higher sales of collaborative arms as the main driverSourced
Currency effectMost Robotics revenue is in currencies other than the U.S. dollar; the company says a stronger dollar would weigh on revenueSourced
A caution

The figures above are for Teradyne’s Robotics segment, not UR alone (they include the MiR autonomous mobile robots). The result is segment income before income taxes, and it varies with how company-wide costs and intangible-asset amortization are allocated. This article does not use these figures to judge the value or prospects of the business, and it does not touch share price or valuation.

5. Resources behind its robot work

We sort four resource types (people, money, outside investments and acquisitions, and ties to universities or public bodies) by whether primary sources let us confirm them. "Not mentioned" is itself a finding.

ResourceContentType
PeopleRobotics-only headcount is not disclosed. The 2025 Robotics restructuring affected about 400 employees (US$24.3 million of severance charges). Within it, the first-quarter (March) 2025 reorganization of go-to-market and other functions affected about 150Sourced
MoneyR&D spending for Robotics alone is not disclosed (Teradyne’s total engineering and development spending was US$504.6 million in 2025, with lower spending in Robotics, the company says). Goodwill of the Robotics reporting unit was US$416.4 million (31 December 2025). The Robotics segment’s 2025 pre-tax loss was US$99.4 millionSourced
Outside investments, acquisitions, joint venturesTeradyne acquired UR in 2015, then Energid and MiR (2018) and Lemsys and AutoGuide (2019) (10-K). The 2025 acquisitions (AET, Quantifi) are on the semiconductor-test side. We found no new robotics acquisition in the 10-K and 10-Qs we checkedSourced

The figures in this table are manufacturer’s stated values or the company’s own descriptions. Payload and reach have conditions per model (maximum versus standard values, mounting posture), so figures for different models cannot be lined up to rank anything. Deployment and shipment claims ("over 100,000", "hundreds shipped") are company statements; breakdowns by unit count and independent verification could not be confirmed in official materials.

A materials engineer’s view: materials for a light, sealed arm, and joints that sense force

UR lists "high performance yet light" as a product trait and says its robots are up to 70% lighter than comparable traditional robots (the comparison target and conditions are not given) Sourced. It also says the g-Series uses an enclosed joint design that reaches IP65 dust and water protection. From a materials standpoint, a light arm and sealed joints tie directly to the choice of structural materials (light, stiff metals or resins), joint reducers (gears), sealing materials (such as rubber) and lubricants. However, the official materials we checked name no specific materials, so this is a general reading Not yet confirmed. See also our explainers on speed reducers and gears, structural materials for robots and drones, and joint actuators.

The other point is sensing force. Gen 7 builds in force and torque sensing and impedance control (control that tunes how firmly the robot pushes back), and the company says this "gives the robot a sense of touch". For work on soft materials or on fitting parts together, that force information matters.

8. What the company seems to be aiming for

This chapter includes points the company does not state directly. They are inferences that stay within what primary sources allow, given with their grounds.

What can be readPrimary-source basisType
Beyond making and selling arms, it is going for the base for developing AI robotsThe Physical AI page names a "robotics platform for physical AI" and lists the AI Accelerator (compute box) and AI Trainer (data capture) as developer productsSourced (company’s description)
It wants to make a strength of putting AI above control while the arm keeps safetyIt says AI can reason probabilistically but robot execution must be deterministic, and that AI operates inside certified safety boundariesSourced (company’s description)
It wants its arm to become a standard place for AI to run, through many AI-company partnershipsIt names Scale AI, Generalist AI (preferred model partner), Sereact, Skild AI (aiming to integrate) and NVIDIA in announcements and on its own pagesInference
After the 2025 revenue decline, it is trying to build growth again with AI and a new generation2025 brought a revenue decline and restructuring. In the first half of 2026 revenue rose about 33%, and Gen 7 was announced in SeptemberInference
One inference in more detail

The reading that "it wants its arm to be a standard place for AI to run" rests on the sequence of UR’s 2026 announcements. In March it announced the AI Trainer with Scale AI and, in the same release, introduced Generalist AI’s robot foundation model as a preferred model partner Sourced. Skild AI also announced in March that it aims to integrate the Skild Brain into UR’s cobot product line, and quotes UR’s head (titled CEO in Skild AI’s article) as wanting to bring advanced AI capabilities to its cobots (Skild AI blog). In September, the Gen 7 announcement put forward "a base on which the AI brain of a robot can run safely". We read these as pointing one way, but the share of UR’s revenue that comes from AI-related work, and the terms of its contracts with AI companies, could not be confirmed from official materials Not yet confirmed.

10. Technologies, products and services

UR’s products fall into three layers: the arm (hardware), the PolyScope robot software, and tools for AI development. Here is what the official site and announcements let us confirm Sourced.

Layers of Gen 7 (our simplification of UR’s 14 September 2026 announcement) AI layer: AI Accelerator (Jetson Orin), AI Trainer, partners’ AI Software: PolyScope X (ISO 10218-1 safety functions, ROS 2, open APIs) Control: CB7 Core (40% more compute and 30% smaller than before) Robot arms: e-Series / UR Series / the new g-Series Tool end: g-Series brings power, data and safety signals to the flange (SP7 Smart Panel)

Force and torque controlFunctions that measure and adjust how hard the robot pushes or twistsGen 7 builds in force-torque sensing and impedance control, it says
A common misunderstanding: "a collaborative robot is always safe beside people"

Collaborative robots are built to work in the same place as people, but that does not make every task safe. The 10-K itself says that after a risk assessment, most cobots can operate alongside employees. For example, a sharp tool or a hot object on the tip can make the whole task dangerous even if the arm is safe. Robot safety is decided by an assessment that covers the task, the tool and the layout, not only the arm’s functions (see also our explainers on how to read robot safety standards and on industrial and collaborative robots). The scope of third-party certification (such as ISO 10218-1) also depends on which models and configurations were certified.

11. Risks the company faces

RiskContentType
Profitability of the robotics businessIn 2025 revenue fell and the pre-tax loss widened. In the first half of 2026 the loss narrowed, but losses continueSourced
Valuation of goodwillRobotics goodwill is US$416.4 million, and the auditor lists it as a critical audit matter (the valuation rests on projected future revenue)Sourced
Currency effectsMost Robotics revenue is in currencies other than the dollar, so a stronger dollar weighs on revenueSourced
Competition and IP disputesUR says it has filed copyright and patent cases in Europe against Chinese robot companies (one resolved by settlement); some outcomes are not settled. They show competition, and they can be long and costlySourced (company announcements)
Proving the value of AIThe physical-AI products are new, and AI-related revenue or deployment scale is not disclosed. Whether the aim of being "a standard place for AI" turns into sales cannot be confirmed nowInference
Dependence on partners’ AIThe AI that runs on UR arms is developed by others (Generalist AI, Skild AI, Sereact and so on), so UR’s value partly depends on how well that AI performsInference

This article rests on Teradyne’s Form 10-K and 10-Qs filed with the U.S. SEC, on Universal Robots’ official website and news, and on Skild AI’s blog. We use no market-research estimates or press-reported figures. Performance values such as payload are the manufacturer’s stated values, and descriptions of deployment, shipment, demonstration and litigation are company announcements, not independent verification. This is not investment advice and does not touch share price or valuation. Passages marked "Inference" are our own readings of primary sources and are not statements by the company.
