Key Findings

Aisin and Tohoku University have jointly developed a 16nm FinFET AI System-on-Chip (SoC) that integrates 32MB of embedded STT-MRAM. This architecture enables an edge AI processing system that operates without the requirement for external memory components like SSDs or DRAM.

Technical Details

The SoC utilizes a 16nm FinFET process and incorporates a significant amount of embedded non-volatile memory (32MB STT-MRAM) directly onto the chip. By consolidating memory and processing on a single die, the system removes the necessity for data transfer between the processor and external memory modules.

Background and Context

The development responds to the rapid expansion of AI technologies, including image recognition and generative AI, into edge devices such as IoT equipment, cameras, robots, and automobiles. Previously, the increasing size of AI models created two primary technical hurdles:

  • Efficiency: Data transfer between the processor and external memory significantly degraded processing speeds and energy efficiency.
  • Latency: System boot times were delayed because the OS and AI models had to be loaded from external memory upon power-up.

Significance and Outlook

By eliminating external memory dependencies, this AI SoC reduces the energy overhead associated with memory access and solves the slow startup issues inherent in traditional edge AI architectures. This advancement allows for more efficient deployment of large AI models in resource-constrained edge environments.
