COMPANY PROFILE / DRONES AND ROBOTICS

Yaskawa Electric
Building motors and robots in-house, and taking on physical AI with the autonomous “MOTOMAN NEXT”

Yaskawa makes the MOTOMAN industrial robots that weld, paint and move parts, and the servo motors that move their joints. Its annual securities report for the year to February 2026 shows robot segment sales of ¥247.0 billion (45.6% of consolidated revenue, our calculation) and operating profit of ¥20.4 billion: sales up, profit down. In its new medium-term plan “Dash 35” the company puts opening the physical AI market first, working on the autonomous AI robot “MOTOMAN NEXT” and on actuators for humanoid robots. This article leaves aside the rest of the company and focuses on the robot side: what it sells, how far the numbers are disclosed, and which parts of its physical-AI work are company description and which are unconfirmed. Yaskawa’s own websites were suspended when this was written, so it rests mainly on the EDINET annual securities reports and the US subsidiary’s site. Checked 25 October 2026.

CENTRAL AI PRODUCTMOTOMAN NEXTAn autonomous AI robot, as the company describes it
The one point to hold on to

Yaskawa is the company behind the MOTOMAN industrial robots that weld, paint and move parts in factories, and it also makes servo motors (motors that turn with precise control), which move robot joints. Its annual securities report divides the company into four segments (motion control, robots, system engineering, other) and discloses sales, operating profit, R&D, capital expenditure and headcount for robots alone, which is unusual detail Sourced.

The second point is the autonomous AI robot “MOTOMAN NEXT”. In its new medium-term plan “Dash 35”, the company puts “opening up the physical AI market” first among its basic policies Sourced. On humanoid robots, we found no statement of selling a finished humanoid; the report says the company has started developing “actuators”, the parts that drive a robot’s joints. This article reads what it sells, how far the numbers are disclosed, and which parts of its AI-robot work are company description or still unconfirmed.

How this article was checked

Yaskawa’s official websites (Japan and global) have been suspended since the night of 21 October 2026 because of a PHP vulnerability, and the product and investor pages could not be read when this article was prepared (checked 25 October 2026) Sourced. We therefore relied on the annual securities reports on EDINET (Japan’s government disclosure system) and on the official site of Yaskawa’s US subsidiary, Yaskawa America. Content that appears only in announcements on the Japanese site could not be checked.

2. The logo and how the name is written

A note on names: the company is YASKAWA Electric Corporation. Its robot brand is MOTOMAN. Yaskawa America, Inc. (which runs the motoman.com brand site) and Yaskawa Europe are subsidiaries (called “Yaskawa America” and “Yaskawa Europe” in the annual securities report). SoftBank, JA Zen-Noh (the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations) and Astellas Pharma are separate companies and organisations.

3. Where the company sits in drones and robotics

Companies in this field are easiest to understand by what they build and who buys it. Yaskawa is mainly an “industrial & specialist robots” company (factory robot arms), and it also builds and sells the motors and controllers inside robots, which gives it a foothold in “components & enabling software”.

Four types of company in drones and robotics Even among “robot companies”, strengths and challenges depend on what is built and who buys it Humanoids & physical AI Industrial & specialist robots Drones & eVTOL Components & enabling software Humanoid, learning robots Factory, medical, inspection Aircraft and operations Parts and AI behind robots Figure AI / Boston Dynamics Unitree / UBTech FANUC / Yaskawa Universal Robots / Intuitive DJI / Skydio Zipline / Joby Harmonic Drive NVIDIA Promise of learning Track record, reliability Air uses; rule compliance Presence in supply chains Scale-up still under way Adapting to change; price Rules and safety approval Demand follows shipments Yaskawa: mainly “industrial & specialist robots”, with servo parts as a secondary line (our grouping) Robots: 45.6% of revenue (to Feb 2026). 7. What comes next

In the annual securities report Yaskawa sets out the medium-term plan “Dash 35” and priorities for FY2026. Targets and plans are the company’s own and are not accomplished fact Not yet confirmed.

MEDIUM-TERM PLANDash 35
(FY2026 to FY2029)
Aims for a record operating profit of ¥100 billion. A whole-company target
INVESTMENT PLAN¥250 billion in totalFY2026 to FY2029: plant reorganisation, in-house production, automation. Whole company
BASIC POLICY 1Open the physical AI marketWider use of MOTOMAN NEXT and advanced actuators for humanoids and other markets
ROBOT PLANT No. 5Due to start in FY2026Integrated motor-to-robot production. Start of operation not confirmed

For FY2026 the company plans higher sales and profit, citing strong demand mainly in AI and semiconductor-related fields (company plan). For robots, it names capturing investment by automotive makers and their suppliers, and expanding into fields where robots have been little used, such as food and medicine. The company defines physical AI as “combining our products with AI to realise use cases in areas that were hard to automate”.

What we could not confirm

The following are not stated in the sources we checked Not yet confirmed: robot-only sales, volume or profit targets; the production capacity of Plant No. 5; the timing and investment of the new US campus; and the mass-production timing and customers for the humanoid actuators.

8. What the company is aiming for in drones and robotics

This section includes points the company does not state directly. They are inferences read from primary sources, shown with their basis.

What we readPrimary source basisType
Its strength is an integrated setup that owns core parts such as motors and controllersAnnual securities report: Robot Plant No. 5 for integrated motor and robot production, a policy to bring key parts in-house, and a plan to strengthen the core-parts line-up for AI robots tooInference
It aims to offer physical AI as a platform that includes an edge AI computer and software, not only the robot armUS site: ACU, a group of services, a development kit (Docker, gRPC) and a simulator; it says third-party models can also runInference
It is trying to reduce reliance on the automotive sector and widen into general industry, food, medicine and agricultureAnnual securities report: automotive capital spending was weak in Japan, the Americas and Europe in the year to February 2026; efforts in fields such as food and medicine are listed as policySourced / Inference
It is approaching humanoids through the parts that drive the joints (actuators), not finished machinesAnnual securities report: it will open humanoid and other markets “through key parts such as advanced actuators” and has started developing new actuators. No sale of a finished humanoid was foundInference
In the year to February 2026, robot sales rose but profit fell because of large projectsAnnual securities report: large projects in China and Asia lifted sales, while operating profit fell because of the value-added mix of those projectsSourced
One inference in more detail

On humanoid robots, the annual securities report says the company has started developing new actuators using the know-how of Tokyo Robotics, and its plan says it will work on “diverse physical AI markets, including humanoid robots, through key parts such as advanced actuators” Sourced. From this we read that Yaskawa may be looking at the position of supplying parts for the joints of humanoid robots rather than the humanoid itself Inference. This fits a company that builds servo motors and robots together, since small, light, high-output actuators for joints are an extension of that work. Customers, mass-production timing and prices are not stated and could not be confirmed Not yet confirmed.

9. Map of partnerships in drones and robotics

Relationships around Yaskawa in robotics Only ties stated in the annual report or official pages; press-only ties excluded (checked 25 October 2026) Yaskawa Robot business SoftBank Physical AI work using AI-RAN JA Zen-Noh Cucumber harvesting robot Astellas Pharma JV for regenerative medicine plant NVIDIA (compatibility) Isaac Sim and cuMotion supported Tokyo Robotics 100% owned; actuator know-how Yantai Dongxing Magnetic Magnetic materials; 19.9% voting Universities (Science Tokyo) Joint research on actuators Joint work or research Investment / JV / acquisition Tool compatibility
Fig. 2 Source: annual securities report (110th fiscal year) and the US subsidiary’s official pages. Only relationships stated in official sources are shown; relationships talked about in the press are not. NVIDIA is listed by the US subsidiary’s page as a tool its simulator works with; no joint development or supply agreement could be confirmed. Most details (value, term, role) are not stated.

On SoftBank, the annual securities report says that “collaboration began in December 2025, and an office robot use case was jointly developed and demonstrated at iREX” Sourced. The form, value and term of the agreement are not stated Not yet confirmed. Tokyo Robotics is described in the report as a company “whose shares Yaskawa acquired in full”; when this happened could not be confirmed Not yet confirmed.

10. Technology, products and services

The robot products listed in the annual securities report are arc welding, spot welding, painting, handling, sealing and cutting, deburring and polishing, and clean and vacuum transfer robots for semiconductor and display plants; AI robots; collaborative robots; robots for biomedical use; peripherals; robot-based factory-automation systems; and cell simulators Sourced.

Autonomous AI robots (MOTOMAN NEXT)The robot recognises and judges its surroundings. Path planning, force control, vision and AI inference run as services on the ACUForce control: adjusting force somewhat like a sense of touch
Simulator (YNX)Builds virtual work cells and checks AI behaviour beforehand. Said to work alongside tools such as NVIDIA Isaac SimDigital twin: a virtual copy of a real machine used for testing
Development kit (ACU SDK)Users can run Docker container applications on the ACU. Libraries such as ROS 2, OpenCV and TensorFlow can be used, it saysA door to openness; described as replacing the older proprietary environment (MotoPlus)
Standards guidanceThe US site advises using ANSI/A3 R15.06-2025 (the US adoption of ISO 10218: 2025) for systems installed after 31 March 2027Safety standards are separate from product certification. The scope of certification could not be confirmed
A materials engineer’s view: magnets in the motor, and light but strong actuators

Servo motors that move robot joints generally use strong magnets (a general point). Yaskawa holds a stake in the magnetic-materials maker Yantai Dongxing Magnetic Materials (19.9% of voting rights; book value ¥30,549 million at the end of February 2026), and the annual securities report says that, for rare-earth-related regulation worldwide, it works to lower procurement risk through long-term relationships with domestic suppliers Sourced. The report does not say, however, which of its motors use that company’s materials Not yet confirmed.

The joint research with Institute of Science Tokyo is on ultralight actuators, with the goal of an ultralight collaborative robot. Making a robot lighter requires rethinking both structural materials and reducers (mechanisms that slow rotation and raise force) (a general point). The US site says NEX-series robots use high-inertia servomotors, but gives no materials or design details. It helps to read this with our explainers on permanent magnets and rare earths, joint actuators, speed reducers and gears, and structural materials for robots and drones.

11. The risks this company carries

RiskContentType
Weak automotive investmentIn the year to February 2026, automotive capital spending was weak in Japan, the Americas and Europe. Automotive is named as the main market for robots, so results follow investment by automakers and their suppliersSourced
Falling marginRobot operating profit fell 14.0%. The operating margin went from 10.0% to 8.3% (our calculation). The company cites the value-added mix of large projectsSourced
Geopolitics, export controls and tariffsWider export controls, limits on technology transfer and higher tariffs could restrict development, production, logistics and salesSourced
Raw materials and partsSteel and parts are sourced worldwide from many suppliers; changes in international relations could make supply hard to secure. Rare-earth-related regulation is also notedSourced
Exchange ratesSales and purchases in US dollars, euros, yuan and others. Larger-than-expected swings could affect competitiveness and resultsSourced
Cyber risk to plantsThe company treats its plant control environment as a key asset and is preparing for cyber attacks and unauthorised operation of equipmentSourced
Monetising physical AIDeployments and sales are not disclosed. Humanoid actuators are at the start of developmentNot yet confirmed
Website suspensionThe company sites have been suspended since the night of 21 October 2026 (PHP vulnerability). The company says no damage has been found. It affects how easily product information can be obtainedSourced
