Key Findings
thyssenkrupp nucera, a leading provider of alkaline water electrolysis technology, has officially opened its first company-operated electrolyzer cell central assembly hub in VGP Park Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. This new facility is set to significantly enhance Europe’s manufacturing capacity for green hydrogen technology and marks a crucial milestone in the company’s global supply chain strategy.
Technical and Manufacturing Details
Spanning over 7,500m², the assembly hub incorporates highly standardized, semi-automated production line processes for the core components of alkaline water electrolyzers: the cells. This advanced manufacturing approach is expected to substantially increase the throughput of electrolyzer cells and drastically reduce production lead times compared to traditional methods. Initial production will focus on supplying cells for Moeve’s Onuba project in Spain, specifically for their innovative scalum® 20 MW electrolyzer units. Full-scale cell assembly operations are slated to begin in 2028.
Background and Industry Context
Green hydrogen is at the heart of Europe’s decarbonization strategy, making a stable supply of the necessary electrolyzer technology indispensable. thyssenkrupp nucera has a global track record in large-scale electrolyzer projects, and the establishment of this hub in Portugal contributes to strengthening European manufacturing capabilities and enhancing supply chain resilience. The European Commission actively encourages local production of hydrogen manufacturing technologies, and this investment will stimulate regional technological development and job creation. Alkaline water electrolysis is a widely adopted technology for large-scale green hydrogen projects, valued for its robust performance and cost-efficiency balance.
Strategic Significance and Outlook
The total investment in this assembly hub amounts to between €10 million and €14 million, with approximately €3.7 million in support from the Portuguese government’s COMPETE2030 program. This public funding underscores the strategic importance of the project and Portugal’s growing role within Europe’s green hydrogen ecosystem. The operationalization of this assembly hub means that thyssenkrupp nucera will be able to supply high-quality electrolyzer cells more quickly and efficiently to major green hydrogen projects across Europe and beyond. This is anticipated to accelerate the development of the entire European hydrogen value chain and bring more green hydrogen production capacity to market.
