JERA Co., Inc., Japan’s largest power generation company, and Samsung C&T Corporation, a leading South Korean general trading company, have signed a Strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to reinforce the hydrogen and ammonia supply value chains and enhance energy security. This partnership marks a significant step towards accelerating low-carbon energy transitions in both countries and contributing to overall energy stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

Technical & Business Details

The objective of the MoU is to optimize the entire hydrogen and ammonia value chain, from production and transportation to storage and utilization. This includes exploring methods to increase operational flexibility, particularly regarding the management and segregation of carbon intensity attributes (e.g., green hydrogen/ammonia, blue hydrogen/ammonia) within storage infrastructure.
JERA is actively developing Japan’s first commercial-scale low-carbon ammonia value chain, targeting operation around fiscal year 2029. This project is expected to contribute significantly to large-scale decarbonization efforts, including ammonia co-firing in existing coal-fired power plants.
Samsung C&T is similarly engaged in hydrogen and ammonia-related projects in South Korea. The partnership aims to leverage shared expertise and resources from both companies to create synergistic effects across their respective initiatives.
