SES and Airbus Netherlands have signed an agreement to construct an optical ground station at the NL Space Campus in Noordwijk, Netherlands. This ground station will serve as the primary terrestrial link for Europe’s flagship EAGLE-1 satellite, which is designed to demonstrate space-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) over distances that are currently impractical via fiber-optic cables. The EAGLE-1 satellite is a prototype designed to validate QKD technology in a space environment. The ground station will establish the necessary optical communication link with the satellite to securely exchange quantum cryptographic keys. This system is envisioned to integrate with advanced protocols such as device-independent QKD (DI-QKD) using routed Bell tests and entanglement swapping, potentially enhancing key detection efficiencies by 4-12% for high visibilities. The ground station will also integrate with other regional assets to form a redundant and weather-resilient ground segment, supporting the robust deployment of EuroQCI. The satellite launch, initially planned for late 2027, has been postponed to late 2027 or early 2028 due due to complexities in payload integration.
