Key Findings
The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), an affiliate of the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ultrahuman Healthcare SP LLC. The partnership aims to create a Biological Health Age model that combines clinical data with continuous metrics from wearable devices to provide a more accurate representation of physiological aging than chronological age.
Technical Details
The proposed model integrates two distinct data streams to overcome the limitations of individual measurement methods:
- Clinical Markers: Blood-based biomarkers provide high-accuracy snapshots of health.
- Continuous Metrics: Wearable devices capture longitudinal patterns, including heart rate variability, sleep architecture, skin temperature, and activity data.
Ultrahuman contributes its expertise in continuous physiological monitoring, utilizing its metabolic health platform which includes a biosensor ring and a glucose monitoring system.
Background and Context
While biological age has gained interest through proteomics and epigenetic clocks, most existing tools are limited to research or consumer wellness applications. This collaboration intends to close the gap by utilizing ADPHC’s public health infrastructure to provide rigorous clinical validation. Abu Dhabi’s diverse international population, characterized by varying genetic backgrounds and lifestyle profiles, is cited as a strategic environment for building a model that generalizes well across different demographics.
Significance and Outlook
Integrating a validated biological age model into population health programs allows for earlier and more personalized risk stratification. The initiative focuses on several key outcomes:
- Earlier identification of cardiovascular and metabolic risks before disease onset.
- Implementation of targeted preventive interventions for high-risk populations.
- Creation of a robust data foundation for longitudinal population health research.
- Potential integration into existing chronic disease screening programs.
The ultimate adoption of the tool into routine clinical practice will depend on the results of the clinical validation process.
