Key Findings
IBM Research has demonstrated a 52-times design speedup in high-level synthesis estimates for quantum error correction hardware. This optimization was achieved using an “agent factory” system at a total inference cost of $26. While a fully proprietary model configuration reached a higher 204x speedup, it required $299 in inference costs—11.5 times more than the open-model approach.
Technical Details
The system employs a coordinator agent that directs parallel worker agents to develop and synthesize alternative designs. The team evaluated this approach using Relay-BP, a quantum error correction decoding algorithm for the [[144,12,12]] bivariate bicycle code, exploring 100 hypotheses per configuration. To minimize costs, the team integrated open frontier models with llm-d, an open-source distributed inference framework.
- Architectural Optimizations: The system replaced sequential reductions with tree structures to enable parallel computation and used cache-aware routing via llm-d to reuse shared context.
- Performance Metrics: The open-model search used approximately 241 million tokens (compared to 216 million for proprietary searches) with a 98% prefix-cache hit rate and a blended serving cost of roughly $0.11 per million tokens.
- Verification: A verifier ranks designs by latency and hardware resource use, guiding subsequent exploration rounds.
Background & Context
Relay-BP decoders are used as a test case due to their inherent parallelism, though they often struggle with memory access patterns and sparse graph representations. The research compared three configurations: open, hybrid, and fully proprietary. Open and hybrid searches prioritized compact designs, whereas the proprietary configuration more effectively converted resources into lower latency and higher parallelism.
Significance & Outlook
The results indicate that the practical value of AI-assisted chip design depends not only on the peak design quality but on the volume of verified exploration an organization can afford. By deploying open-weight models on-premises via llm-d, enterprises can maintain control over sensitive design artifacts and intellectual property while dramatically lowering serving costs, making AI-driven hardware design more accessible.
