POSCO, a leading South Korean steel manufacturer, has completed the construction of the nation’s largest electric arc furnace (EAF) at its Gwangyang Works, featuring an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons. Technical & Project Details
- The newly constructed EAF at Gwangyang primarily uses scrap steel as raw material. This process significantly reduces CO2 emissions compared to blast furnace operations that produce iron from iron ore, which consumes large quantities of coal. The 2.5 million-ton annual capacity is among the largest for an EAF in South Korea, aiming to maintain a stable supply of steel products while reducing environmental impact.
- EAF technology utilizes electrical energy to melt and refine scrap steel. Unlike blast furnaces, which are heavy carbon emitters, EAFs drastically cut direct CO2 emissions. Further decarbonization is possible by powering the EAF with electricity from renewable sources.
- In addition to the EAF, POSCO also plans to launch a 300,000-ton per year HyREX (Hydrogen Reduction Ironmaking) pilot plant in Pohang by 2028. HyREX is a next-generation hydrogen-based steelmaking technology that aims to achieve near-zero CO2 emissions in steel production by using hydrogen as the primary reducing agent.
