Technical Details
HALEU, with uranium-235 enriched to between 5% and 20%, offers higher energy density than conventional light-water reactor fuel (below 5%), making it ideal for small reactors and advanced nuclear propulsion systems. NASA’s ‘SR-1 Freedom’ mission incorporates a Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP) system, aiming to reduce transit time to Mars by up to 50%. This system will generate 20 kW of power, essential for communications, life support, and scientific instrument operations on Mars. Furthermore, this technology will inform the development of the ‘Lunar Reactor-1 (LR-1)’ which is designed to enable lunar base operations and contribute to long-term human activities on the lunar surface.
