Eligible technologies include, for example, compressed air energy storage (CAES), liquid air energy storage (LAES), hydrogen storage, gravity-based storage, thermal energy storage, and new generations of flow batteries and solid-state batteries. The program supports technologies in the research, demonstration, and pre-commercialization stages, aiming to shorten their time to market. Specifically, while existing lithium-ion batteries cater to several hours of storage, this challenge focuses on systems with storage capacities exceeding 100 hours. This capability will enable the grid to cover electricity shortfalls during prolonged periods of low wind or cloud cover, known as ‘dunkelflaute’.
