On July 9, 2026, Century Therapeutics announced that promising preclinical data for CNTY-813, its induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived islet replacement therapy for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), will be presented orally at EASD 2026 (European Association for the Study of Diabetes) and the Breakthrough T1D® Clinical & Research Congress 2026. CNTY-813 consists of islet cells differentiated from genetically engineered iPSCs, specifically targeting a functional cure for T1D. Traditional islet transplantation requires lifelong, potent immunosuppressants to prevent immune rejection, exposing patients to risks of infection and other serious complications. Century Therapeutics’ Allo-Evasion™ 5.0 technology is designed to eliminate the need for these immunosuppressive drugs. This platform engineers iPSCs with multiple genetic modifications to evade both innate and adaptive immune system attacks. Preclinical studies have confirmed that CNTY-813 functions stably and continues to produce insulin even in immunologically challenged environments, providing data suggestive of long-term normalization of blood glucose levels in diabetes models. Safety profiles and manufacturing processes have been established in preparation for an IND submission.
Background & Context
Type 1 Diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, necessitating lifelong insulin injections for glucose management. However, insulin injections alone often fall short of achieving perfect glycemic control, leaving patients at high risk for long-term complications. iPSC-derived islet cell transplantation offers a highly promising approach to address the root cause of the disease by replenishing lost insulin-producing cells.
