The National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) have inaugurated the ‘SG Bio-SPRINT’ program, backed by a S$22 million (approximately US$24 million) research grant. At its core, the SG Bio-SPRINT program seeks to utilize lignocellulosic biomass, such as agricultural waste and wood biomass, as a feedstock for high-value chemicals and polymers, replacing petrochemicals. Researchers will integrate advanced biochemical and materials science techniques, including enzymatic degradation, catalytic conversion, and precise polymerization, to extract monomers from biomass and transform them into high-performance polymers. These developed polymers are expected to exhibit mechanical strength, thermal stability, and other functional properties comparable to or exceeding traditional petroleum-derived polymers. The objective is to establish sustainable supply chains through manufacturing processes with reduced environmental footprints.
