Key Findings
The Libre DUO 10 Day system has been authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the world’s first sensor capable of providing both glucose and ketone readings from a single device. The system is authorized for use in children aged 2 years and older.
Technical Details
The sensor is designed for a 10-day wear period. Clinical studies regarding sensor longevity indicate that 84.1% of sensors used by adults and 68.8% of sensors used by pediatric patients lasted the full 10 days. The system integrates with the Libre app, which is compatible with specific mobile devices and operating systems, and may require registration with LibreView.
The system includes alarm notifications, which function when settings are enabled and the sensor is within 33 feet unobstructed of the reading device. However, the “Urgent Low Glucose” and “Urgent High Ketones” alarms may not detect all instances of glucose levels below 55 mg/dL or ketone levels above 3.0 mmol/L.
Background and Context
The development of the Libre DUO addresses the difficulty of recognizing diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Glucose and ketone levels do not always trend in the same direction, and ketones can remain high even when glucose levels appear normal. Because early signs of DKA can mimic flu symptoms or other illnesses, the condition can develop quickly without timely intervention.
Significance and Outlook
By monitoring both biomarkers, the Libre DUO system provides a more comprehensive data set than traditional continuous glucose monitoring combined with separate urine or blood ketone testing. For clinical decision-making, the manufacturer specifies that ketone output should be used in conjunction with glucose levels. In cases where readings or alarms do not match symptoms, users are instructed to use a blood glucose meter for fingerstick values.
