Key Findings
China has successfully launched a new constellation of commercial remote sensing satellites. This satellite group will enable the provision of higher-resolution and more frequent Earth observation data than traditional satellites, aiming to significantly enhance commercial services across a wide range of fields, including agricultural monitoring, urban planning, environmental protection, and disaster management. This launch represents a crucial strategic milestone for China to accelerate the growth of its space economy and bolster its competitiveness in the global Earth observation market.
Technical Details
The newly launched constellation comprises 10 optical satellites with panchromatic (black and white) resolution of sub-30cm and multispectral resolution of 1m, alongside 5 X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites capable of detecting surface changes with millimeter accuracy under all weather conditions. By deploying these satellites in different orbital planes, it becomes possible to observe any point on Earth up to four times a day, doubling the observation frequency compared to conventional systems. On-board edge computing units perform initial data processing and compression in orbit, reducing downlink data volume and enabling near real-time information delivery. Gigabit-class optical communication (laser communication) technology is adopted for data transmission, ensuring high-speed and secure data flow. The mission life is projected to be over five years, enabling long-term service provision.
