Key Findings
Kuraray America, Inc. has announced the launch of EVAL™ SC, a new generation of EVOH (Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer) resin. This groundbreaking product addresses the long-standing challenge of recyclability in high-performance packaging materials, significantly improving the recyclability of multilayer structures traditionally dependent on PVdC (polyvinylidene chloride) or high levels of polyamide. This innovation is set to accelerate the transition towards more sustainable packaging materials.
Technical / Clinical Details
EVAL™ SC utilizes proprietary technology to impart a specific orientation between the polymer’s glass transition temperature (Tg) and crystallization temperature (Tc). This unique property enables the control of adhesion between layers in multilayer structures, which was previously difficult to separate, facilitating efficient separation during the recycling process. Specifically, this resin can provide excellent oxygen barrier properties while simultaneously increasing compatibility with existing packaging material recycling streams. Furthermore, the ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) certification for all Kuraray EVAL™ plants guarantees the use of renewable and circular feedstocks throughout the production process, further enhancing the product’s environmental performance. This helps reduce reliance on fossil resources and build a more sustainable supply chain.
Background & Context
In recent years, concerns over the environmental impact of plastic packaging have escalated, making improved recyclability an urgent global challenge. Multilayer films, widely used in food packaging, have been particularly difficult to recycle due to their composition of different plastic types in each layer. High-performance barrier materials like PVdC and polyamide are essential for food preservation, but their use has significantly hindered recyclability. Innovative EVOH resins like EVAL™ SC are expected to address these challenges, offering solutions that balance performance with recyclability.
Strategic Significance & Outlook
The introduction of EVAL™ SC marks a crucial step in accelerating the shift towards a circular economy within the packaging industry. This technology expands the options for sustainable solutions in food and consumer goods packaging, helping brand owners achieve their environmental targets. In the future, high-performance barrier materials designed with recyclability in mind are likely to become standard for multilayer packaging, potentially leading to a substantial reduction in the overall environmental footprint of the packaging industry. For investors, this technology is noteworthy as it establishes a competitive advantage in a market increasingly focused on sustainability.
