Key Findings
DynElectro has achieved a new world record in Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC) stack durability, demonstrating 25,000 hours of continuous operation (approximately 2.9 years) with a groundbreaking degradation rate of just 0.05% per 1,000 hours. This milestone was accomplished with a 70-cell SolydEra stack under stable AC:DC operation at 750°C and -0.5 A/cm².
Technical / Clinical Details
The record-breaking performance was enabled by DynElectro’s patented AC:DC technology integrated into their Dynamic Electrolyzer Units (DEU). This technology allows for stable operation of the electrolyzer stack even when coupled with intermittent renewable energy sources, addressing a key challenge in green hydrogen production. The test, conducted on a 70-cell SolydEra stack, maintained high performance at an elevated temperature of 750°C and a current density of -0.5 A/cm². The unprecedented low degradation rate over such an extended period significantly mitigates concerns regarding SOEC system lifespan and maintenance costs, which have historically been barriers to widespread adoption. This adaptability to dynamic power inputs from renewables makes the technology highly suitable for the future energy landscape.
Background & Context
Green hydrogen is a critical energy vector for global decarbonization. SOEC technology offers higher efficiency in hydrogen production compared to traditional low-temperature electrolysis methods (PEM, alkaline) due to its high operating temperature, which utilizes heat energy more effectively. However, the long-term durability and stability of SOEC stacks have been major hurdles for commercial-scale deployment. DynElectro’s achievement directly addresses this challenge, validating the technology’s readiness for integration with renewable energy sources for stable and economical large-scale green hydrogen production.
Strategic Significance & Outlook
DynElectro is actively deploying its DEU technology in multiple pilot and commercial projects across Europe, further validating its real-world application. This world record significantly bolsters investor and industry confidence in SOEC technology, promising to accelerate cost reduction and scalability in green hydrogen manufacturing. The high efficiency and robust durability of SOEC technology are increasingly vital for meeting the rising hydrogen demand in hard-to-abate sectors such as steelmaking, chemical production, and ammonia synthesis, which require high-temperature processes. DynElectro’s innovation positions SOEC as a core technology to expedite decarbonization efforts within these critical industrial sectors.
