ORNL Isotope Purification: Silicon-28 Purity for Quantum Devices

Quantum Zeitgeist USA
Overview
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has achieved 99.9999 percent purity of silicon-28 in silane production, reducing contaminants to below one part per million. This advancement provides a domestic supply chain for the Genesis Mission and offers purity at least 100 times greater than existing commercial sources.
In Depth

Key Findings

Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have reached a silicon-28 purity level of 99.9999 percent during silane production. This achievement significantly reduces contaminant isotopes, specifically reducing germanium-73 and silicon-29 to levels below one part per million. This level of purification is at least 100 times greater than any commercially available source worldwide.

Technical Details

The purification process directly addresses stability issues inherent in quantum devices by eliminating isotopes that act as contaminants. By achieving 99.9999 percent purity, the researchers have minimized the presence of germanium-73 and silicon-29, which are critical factors in the performance and stability of quantum hardware.

Background & Context

This work was recognized with a DOE Secretary’s Achievement Award. According to ORNL Director Stephen Streiffer, the project demonstrates the application of deep scientific and technical expertise to address difficult national challenges. Additionally, the achievement bolsters the domestic supply chain necessary to support the Genesis Mission.

Parallel to its quantum materials work, ORNL received an award for enhancing global nuclear security. A team led by Kris Gaines developed and implemented an interim storage solution for spent highly enriched uranium (HEU) from Kazakhstan’s IVG.1M research reactor. This international effort involved relocating the material to mitigate proliferation risks and ensure security until long-term disposition options are finalized.

Significance & Outlook

The ability to produce ultra-pure silicon-28 provides a critical material foundation for the development of more stable quantum devices. By reducing contaminants to one in a million, ORNL has established a new benchmark for material purity in the quantum sector. Furthermore, the lab’s dual success in isotope purification and nuclear security highlights the role of national laboratories, managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, in addressing complex technical and security threats.
