This process breaks down complex polymer chains into a liquid hydrocarbon feedstock, often referred to as pyrolysis oil or “poly-crude.” This pyrolysis oil is then processed in a conventional petrochemical cracker, much like virgin naphtha derived from fossil fuels, to produce new monomers. These monomers are subsequently polymerized into virgin-quality polyethylene (PE). This “mass balance” approach ensures that the recycled content is indistinguishable from virgin material, allowing its use in sensitive applications where purity and performance are critical. The advantage of pyrolysis lies in its ability to handle mixed and contaminated plastic waste streams that are otherwise unrecyclable through conventional mechanical methods, significantly broadening the scope of plastic recycling.
