GlobalFoundries has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the U.S. Department of Commerce for a substantial $300 million award from the CHIPS Research and Development Office. The grant will primarily be invested in innovations across optical materials, the development of advanced wafer technologies, and the evolution of 3D hybrid bonding techniques. These advancements are critical for overcoming data transmission bottlenecks and achieving the high-speed, low-power interconnects essential for demanding AI workloads. GlobalFoundries intends to leverage its proprietary SCALE™ platform to develop silicon photonics solutions that offer modularity and 400Gb/s performance. A particularly ambitious goal is to achieve up to a five-fold improvement in energy efficiency compared to current electrical interconnect implementations, which holds the potential to dramatically reduce operational costs and environmental impact in AI data centers.
