STMicroelectronics RHFLVDS42: QML-V Quad LVDS Receiver Specs

Laser Focus World (ST press release) Switzerland
Overview
STMicroelectronics has introduced the RHFLVDS42, a QML-V qualified quad low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) receiver designed for aerospace applications. The device supports data exchange speeds up to 600Mbps and offers high radiation resistance and ESD immunity. This expansion of the space-grade portfolio provides a robust communication component compatible with both legacy CMOS and modern power supply norms.
In Depth

Key Findings

The RHFLVDS42 is a quad LVDS receiver that enables high-speed data exchange up to 600Mbps while maintaining low power consumption. It is designed for extreme environments, featuring a wide operating temperature range from -55°C to +125°C and high resilience against radiation and electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Technical Details

The device operates within a voltage range of 2.3V to 3.6V, ensuring compliance with Jedec and TIA/EIA-644 low-voltage logic and power supply norms. To enhance link reliability and mitigate common-mode noise, the receiver features a broad input common-mode voltage range from -4V to +5V. Additionally, an absolute maximum voltage rating (AMR) of 4.8V protects the component against power-supply transients.

Radiation and ESD specifications include:

  • ESD Immunity: 8kV.
  • Total Ionizing Dose (TID): Stable up to 300krad (Si) per RHA QML-V.
  • Single Event Latch-up (SEL): SEL-free operation at 122.6 MeV.cm²/mg.
  • Single Event Transient/Upset (SET/SEU): SET/SEU-free at 61.3 MeV.cm²/mg.

Background & Context

The RHFLVDS42 is manufactured in Rennes, France, utilizing ST’s 130nm CMOS technology, which has been used in space operations for over ten years. Because it meets EAR99 export administration regulations, the component is accessible for global supply chains, including those in Asia and the USA.

Significance & Outlook

The device is available in a grounded-lid Flat-16 hermetic package featuring a flow-through pinout to minimize crosstalk and optimize PCB space. For missions where weight and space are critical constraints, the receiver is also available as a bare die. By combining compatibility with legacy CMOS designs and modern radiation hardening, the RHFLVDS42 supports the reliability requirements of contemporary aerospace communication systems.
