The State Electricity Commission (SEC) of Victoria, Australia, in partnership with Italian clean technology company Energy Dome, has announced plans to develop Victoria’s inaugural 10-hour Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) facility. Technical Details
Energy Dome’s CO2 Battery technology, selected for this project, represents a sustainable long-duration storage solution that does not rely on lithium or other critical minerals, offering an attractive alternative to conventional battery chemistries. The system operates by compressing CO2 gas into a liquid state during charging, storing energy in this dense form. When power is needed, the liquid CO2 is expanded through a turbine to generate electricity. This closed-loop process reuses the CO2 without atmospheric emissions, making it an environmentally benign technology. Compared to pumped-hydro or compressed-air energy storage (CAES), CO2 batteries offer greater geographic flexibility and competitive deployment costs.
