Li-Cycle has announced the commencement of commercial operations at its state-of-the-art ‘Spoke’ facility located in Kirchdorf, Germany. This facility is designed to significantly enhance Europe’s capacity for recycling end-of-life lithium-ion batteries. The Spoke facility safely pre-processes waste batteries to produce ‘black mass,’ an intermediate product rich in valuable metals such as cobalt, nickel, and lithium. Li-Cycle’s Spoke technology mechanically shreds waste batteries and, through specific physical processes, generates a black powdery substance containing electrode materials, known as ‘black mass.’ This process employs a ‘wet’ approach that avoids the use of heat or harmful chemicals, offering advantages over traditional pyrometallurgy in terms of lower energy consumption and reduced air pollution risks. The black mass is then transported to Li-Cycle’s ‘Hub’ facilities (central processing facilities that further refine black mass collected from Spoke facilities), where high-purity, battery-grade materials (e.g., lithium carbonate, nickel sulfate, cobalt sulfate) are recovered. This two-stage process achieves high material recovery rates and environmental efficiency.
