SK On, a leading South Korean battery manufacturer, has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Factorial Energy, a U.S.-based solid-state battery development company, for manufacturing cooperation on next-generation solid-state batteries. The primary objective of this partnership is to jointly evaluate whether Factorial’s innovative FEST® (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology) solid-state battery platform can be efficiently mass-produced by leveraging SK On’s existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing infrastructure and equipment.
Technical / Clinical Details
Factorial Energy’s FEST® technology utilizes a unique fluorine-based solid electrolyte, achieving both high ionic conductivity and stability, thereby enabling high-energy-density and safe solid-state batteries with lithium metal anodes. Under this MOU, the two companies will examine the applicability of SK On’s existing battery production lines, particularly dry electrode processes, to Factorial’s solid-state battery manufacturing. This approach aims to reduce capital expenditure for new equipment while applying expertise gained from current lithium-ion battery production to solid-state battery manufacturing, targeting early mass production and cost competitiveness. SK On had already established a pilot production line at its Future Technology Research Institute in Daejeon last year, pursuing internal development of solid-state battery technology concurrently.

As the electric vehicle (EV) market continues to grow, extending driving range, shortening charging times, and enhancing safety are urgent challenges, and solid-state batteries are anticipated as the ultimate solution to these issues. SK On has already established a cooperative relationship with Solid Power for sulfide-based solid-state battery technology, and this new partnership with Factorial Energy is seen as a strategic move to strengthen and diversify its approach to various solid electrolyte technologies, thereby mitigating risks.
