India’s Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has committed to deploying the nation’s first utility-scale vanadium redox flow battery, alongside pumped hydro storage projects. Delectrik Systems has secured a contract to install a 16.7 MW / 100 MWh flow battery at the Khavda Hybrid Renewable Energy Park, targeting operation by 2027. Technical Details
Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs) are characterized by their ability to independently scale energy and power storage. These systems store electricity by utilizing the redox reactions of vanadium ions, offering key advantages such as non-flammability, extremely long cycle life (tens of thousands of cycles), and easy scalability for large-scale applications. The 100 MWh capacity is sufficient to power tens of thousands of homes for several hours, effectively smoothing out the variable output from renewable energy sources within the Khavda Hybrid Renewable Energy Park. This will bring stability and flexibility to India’s grid, contributing significantly to its renewable energy targets.
