Key Findings
Henan Huiyang Bio-New Materials Co., Ltd. has successfully operationalized a thousand-ton scale pilot demonstration line in Hebi, producing ultra-high molecular weight polylactic acid (PLA). The production line achieves a weight-average molecular weight of over 300,000, marking a transition from laboratory results to industrial application. The company has already sent samples to over 20 downstream customers across the high-end packaging, textile, 3D printing, and foaming material sectors.
Technical Details
The material is synthesized from corn and cassava starch. While standard commercial PLA typically has a molecular weight of only several tens of thousands—resulting in brittleness and poor heat resistance—Huiyang’s ultra-high molecular weight variant addresses these limitations. Key technical improvements include:
- Tensile Strength: Increased by nearly 40% compared to ordinary PLA.
- Material Properties: Significant enhancements in toughness, heat resistance, and batch stability.
- Environmental Impact: The material is fully biodegradable, breaking down into water and carbon dioxide without leaving microplastic pollution.
- Market Positioning: Despite a price point approximately 10% higher than general-purpose PLA, the material targets high-value applications.
Background & Context
Established on December 18, 2024, with a registered capital of 30 million RMB, Henan Huiyang Bio-New Materials is a foreign-invested enterprise controlled by the Henan Biological Industry Group. The company is located in the Synthetic Biology Town of Shancheng District, Hebi. The production line, completed in October 2025, is described as the first high-end PLA production line globally, utilizing a continuous polymerization process developed over more than two years.
Significance & Outlook
The ability to produce ultra-high molecular weight PLA allows the company to move beyond low-value disposable items. Potential applications include high-end textile fabrics, foaming buffer materials, biaxially oriented films, 3D printing filaments, and high-temperature resistant food containers, with future expansion planned for absorbable medical consumables. The company intends to optimize technology and scale up production lines to establish a major biodegradable materials base in Henan province.
